An investigation of predictors of successful aging in the workplace among Hong Kong Chinese older workers.

BACKGROUND: We examined associations between successful aging in the workplace (adaptability and health, positive relationship, occupational growth, personal security, and continuous focus on goals) and two major factors of work stressors (work family conflict and discrimination against older workers) and coping resources (perceived organizational support, supportive human resource policies, and social support from friends and family) among Chinese older workers in Hong Kong. Furthermore, we also examined whether coping resources moderate the negative effect derived from work stressors on succ

Health Equality and Socioeconomic Impact of Hereditary Sensory Neuropathy Type 1 (HSN1) in the UK.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Hereditary Sensory Neuropathy Type 1 (HSN1) is a rare autosomal dominant neuropathy caused by variants in the SPTLC1 and SPTLC2 genes, resulting in sensory loss, motor weakness, chronic ulceration, and risk of limb amputation. Whilst the clinical manifestations are well characterised, the socioeconomic and psychosocial impact remains under-researched and poorly understood. This pilot study aimed to assess the health equality and socioeconomic impact of HSN1 on affected individuals in the UK. METHODS: A novel 28-item anonymised questionnaire focusing on employment, healthc

Transforming Direct Care Jobs, Reimagining Long-Term Services and Supports.

The diverse array of individuals who receive long-term services and supports share one common experience, which is the need for assistance with personal care and/or other daily activities. The direct care workers (including nursing assistants, home health aides, and personal care aides) who provide this assistance play a critical role in keeping individuals safe, supporting their health and well-being, and helping prevent adverse outcomes. Yet despite decades of research, advocacy, and incremental policy and practice reform, direct care workers remain inadequately compensated, supported, and r

Mapping global evidence on compassion fatigue among healthcare workers during COVID-19: insights and implications for future preparedness - a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Compassion fatigue (CF) is a critical occupational hazard for healthcare workers (HCWs), intensified by the COVID-19 pandemic, with implications for well-being, retention, and quality of care. We aimed to map the global evidence on CF prevalence, risk factors, effects, interventions, and research gaps among HCWs during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: A scoping review of 56 studies from 21 countries (2020-2025) was conducted following PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Seven databases were searched, and findings were synthesised narratively with attention to occupational, demographic, and syst

Can financial retention incentives slow health worker migration? PPP-adjusted salary differentials in Zimbabwe's donor-dependent health system.

BACKGROUND: Large-scale migration of health workers from low-income countries continues to undermine health system capacity, particularly in contexts characterised by fiscal constraint and donor dependence. While retention incentives are widely used to mitigate attrition, their ability to offset international wage differentials remains contested. Zimbabwe provides a salient case, having implemented a long-standing Health Worker Retention Scheme (HWRS), largely financed by external partners, to stabilise critical cadres within the public health sector. This study aimed to quantify PPP-adjusted

What stops us from healing the healers: a survey of help-seeking behaviour, stigmatisation and depression within the medical profession.

BACKGROUND: Doctors are poor at help-seeking, particularly for mental ill health; attitudes of colleagues reflecting stigmatisation may be important factors influencing decisions to seek support. AIMS: This article focuses on doctors' attitudes to depression rather than mental illness in general. It seeks to determine the extent to which doctors perceive depression is stigmatised within the medical profession and whether the level of perceived stigma affects patterns of help-seeking behaviour. METHOD: : A postal survey was sent to 1488 General Practitioners and 152 psychiatrists in Devon and

Preputial pedicle flap ICG blood flow assessment during proximal hypospadias repair: Development of a standardized protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Blood supply to preputial flap drives outcomes of hypospadias repair. Unfortunately, we only have surgeon's subjective assessment to evaluate flap perfusion which may not be accurate. Indocyanine green (ICG) has been used in a multitude of surgeries for perfusion assessment, however, no standardized protocol has been described for use of ICG in hypospadias repairs. The aim of this study is to develop a standardized protocol of ICG use in proximal hypospadias and establish perfusion patterns of preputial flaps. STUDY DESIGN: A pilot study was conducted using ICG in patients with

A reconditioning program to lower the recurrence rate of brachial plexus neurapraxia in collegiate football players.

ObjectiveTo present clinical techniques for managing class I brachial plexus neurapraxia (BPN) in collegiate football players.BackgroundDuring a football career, up to 50% of college football players develop BPN. It is difficult to return the player to practice and competition without many recurrences during the same season. Postseason reconditioning programs may improve the outcome by allowing the injured nerves a chance to heal adequately. Flexibility and strength of the neck and shoulder girdle are the focus of this proposed postseason BPN reconditioning program. This clinical technique is

Developing a scholarship community.

PURPOSE: To report the results of a multidisciplinary, interinstitutional writing support group established to facilitate faculty scholarly productivity. ORGANIZING CONCEPT: The road to scholarship can be filled with many obstacles, among them time constraints, teaching and meeting demands, student needs, office interruptions, and lack of colleagueship. The problems associated with lack of colleagueship, in particular, can be compounded for faculty who work in isolated contexts with few, if any, senior faculty to serve as mentors. METHODS OF DEVELOPMENT: The Western Writers Coercion Group evol

Too old, too foreign, too replaceable? How AI shapes livelihood security of ageing immigrants.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence is rapidly disrupting high-level cognitive and analytical labour. Yet, while emerging macroeconomic analyses increasingly map AI exposure across broad demographic boundaries, there is a scarcity of qualitative research exploring how these shifts are experienced by highly skilled older immigrant professionals navigating the workforce at the compounding intersection of age, migration status, and professional isolation. METHODS: This qualitative study explored the lived experiences of 32 older immigrant professionals aged 50-55 across four AI-disrupted sectors

Hoarseness and Dermatomyositis: Insights from the Historical Case of Maria Callas.

BACKGROUND: Dermatomyositis (DM) is an autoimmune inflammatory myopathy characterized by proximal muscle weakness and distinctive cutaneous manifestations. While dysphagia is a well-recognized otolaryngologic feature of DM, dysphonia-particularly as an early or isolated manifestation-remains under-recognized and may be overlooked, especially in professional voice users. Maria Callas, one of the most influential opera singers of the twentieth century, experienced a rapid and controversial vocal decline at the peak of her career, the etiology of which has long been debated. METHODS: We conducte
