Caudate hemorrhage: clinical features, neuropsychological assessments and radiological findings.

The nucleus caudatus is not a common location of spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage. Twelve patients (8 men and 4 women) aged 38-76 years who had caudate hemorrhage between November 1, 1992 and March 31, 1994 were evaluated. These cases represented 2.1% of intracerebral hemorrhage cases at Neurological Institute, Veterans General Hospital-Taipei, Taiwan. Cerebral angiography was performed on eight patients. Six patients were evaluated by an extensive neuropsychological battery. The most frequent symptoms of caudate hemorrhage were headache and/or vomiting, and decreased consciousness. Clinic

Caudate-Centric Triphasic Network Reconfiguration Characterizes the Early Progression of Cognitive Impairment in Parkinson's Disease: A Simultaneous PET/fMRI Study.

BACKGROUND: The stage-specific dynamics of functional brain networks in early Parkinson's disease cognitive impairment (PD-CI) remain unclear. This study investigated caudate-centric hierarchical functional network reconfiguration across early PD-CI stages using simultaneous [18F]fluoropropyl-(+)-dihydrotetrabenazine positron emission tomography (18F-FP-DTBZ PET) and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI). METHODS: Forty-six Parkinson's disease (PD) patients underwent simultaneous 18F-FP-DTBZ PET/MR with rs-fMRI sequences. Patients were categorized as normal cognition (

Neuronal distribution in the putamen in Huntington's disease.

The numbers of neurons were counted in the ventral and dorsal anterior and ventral and dorsal posterior part of the putamen of 11 Huntington's disease and nine control patients. The process of neuronal cell loss in Huntington's disease proved to be unevenly spread throughout the putamen; the ventral anterior part was relatively spared as compared with the other parts of the putamen. A significantly higher number of neurons was found in the ventral part of the putamen in the controls.

Association of Circumscribed Subcortical Gray and White Matter Lesions With Apraxic Deficits in Patients With Left Hemisphere Stroke.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Apraxia is commonly attributed to left hemisphere (LH) lesions of the cortical fronto-temporo-parietal praxis networks or white matter lesions causing disconnections between cortical nodes. By contrast, the contribution of lesions to the subcortical gray matter, that is, basal ganglia or thalamus, to apraxic deficits remains controversial. Here, we investigate whether damage to these subcortical gray matter structures (i.e., caudate nucleus, putamen, globus pallidus, and thalamus) or the adjacent white matter tracts was associated with apraxic deficits. METHODS: We

[A case of familial juvenile Alzheimer's disease with apallic state at the relatively early stage and various neurological features--a clinicopathological study].

A case of familial juvenile Alzheimer's disease with apallic state at the relatively early stage and various neurological features was reported. A 33-year-old woman showed a progressive dementia followed by apallic state at the relatively early stage, and died of cardiac failure at the age of 45. Neurological examination disclosed chorea, myoclonus, rigidity, pyramidal sign, and generalized convulsion. Neuropathologically, extensive senile changes such as senile plaques, neurofibrillary tangles, and granurovascular degenerations were observed in the brain, chiefly in the cerebral cortex and li

Clinicopathological differences between the motor onset and psychiatric onset of Huntington's disease, focusing on the nucleus accumbens.

Huntington's disease (HD) is an autosomal-dominant neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the presence of chorea, psychiatric symptoms, and dementia. Although motor symptoms are thought to be correlated with the degeneration of the striatum, there is little information regarding the neuropathological basis of psychiatric symptoms. The ventral part of the striatum is known as the nucleus accumbens (Acb) and is a region of interest as a responsible focus of psychiatric symptoms. The purpose of this study was to investigate the neuronal changes in the Acb and its relevance to psychiatric sym

[Bilateral hyperintensity of the pulvinar in sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease].

INTRODUCTION: Definitive diagnosis of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) is made by pathological study. The premortem differentiation of variant forms is important in public health. Bilateral hyperintensity of the thalamic pulvinar nucleus in T2, FLAIR and DW sequences ("pulvinar sign") in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is related to the variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) and is a diagnostic criterion of probable vCJD. A case of sporadic CJD with bilateral hyperintensity of pulvinar nucleus is described. CASE REPORT: A case of a 64 year old male with progressive gait and cognitive functi

Memory dysfunction in caudate infarction caused by Heubner's recurring artery occlusion.

We report five cases with caudate infarction due to Heubner's recurring artery occlusion, in which we conducted detailed memory examinations in terms of explicit memory and implicit memory. We performed the auditory verbal learning test as explicit memory tasks, and motor and cognitive procedural memory tasks, developed by Komori, as implicit memory tasks. Comparing normal control subjects with patients with left caudate infarction due to Heubner's recurring artery occlusion demonstrated lower scores on both declarative and motor procedural memory tasks. These results suggest that the left cau

Prognostic value of diffusion-weighted imaging in patients with newly diagnosed sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate clinico-radiologic markers that predict poor overall survival (OS) in sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (sCJD) and to develop a prognostic model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with newly diagnosed sCJD were included who underwent diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) from February 2000 to July 2020. The impact of 9 clinico-radiologic features on OS was analyzed using univariable and multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression model. The DWI prognostic score model was generated. The weighted kappa was calculated for interobserver agreement. RESULTS: Sixty patients

Deep Gray Matter Iron Deposition and Its Relationship to Clinical Features in Cerebral Autosomal Dominant Arteriopathy With Subcortical Infarcts and Leukoencephalopathy Patients: A 7.0-T Magnetic Resonance Imaging Study.

Background and Purpose- Distribution patterns of iron deposition in deep gray matter and their association with clinical characteristics in cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL) remain unclear. We aimed to evaluate iron deposition in deep gray matter in patients with CADASIL using 7.0-T susceptibility-weighted imaging and mapping and to explore its correlations with clinical characteristics. Methods- Thirty-nine patients with CADASIL, confirmed via genetic analysis or skin biopsy, were enrolled. We examined patients using the Mini-

Peter H. Kelly, Paul W. Seviour and Susan D. Iversen (1975) "Amphetamine and apomorphine responses in the rat following 6-OHDA lesions of the nucleus accumbens septi and corpus striatum" [Brain Res. 94 (3) 507-522].

UNLABELLED: Eight μg of 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) injected bilaterally into the nucleus accumbens septi (NAS) or the caudate nucleus of the rat resulted in 79% and 50% depletion of endogenous dopamine (DA) at these respective sites. Fourteen days after the injection a low dose of amphetamine failed to induce the characteristic locomotor response in the NAS-lesioned rats but did so in the caudate-lesioned animals. By contrast the caudate lesion, but not the NAS lesion, abolished intense forms of stereotyped behaviour induced by higher doses of amphetamine. Both lesioned groups exhibited supers

Association between structural disconnection and early cognitive impairment after acute ischemic stroke: A network-based statistical study.

Post-stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) affects up to 75% of patients acutely and strongly predicts dementia, yet the acute-phase structural network signature remains unclear. We included 589 first-ever acute ischemic stroke patients (≤ 7 days) and classified them into PSCI and non-PSCI groups using the acute-phase MoCA. Individualized structural disconnection matrices (135 nodes) were constructed from DWI lesion masks and the HCP-842 normative tractography atlas (derived from 842 healthy adults), representing indirect disconnectome estimates rather than patient-specific DTI tractography. Effect of L-Dopa on metabotropic glutamate receptor 5 in the brain of parkinsonian monkeys.

Behavioral investigations of selective and potent metabotropic glutamate receptor type 5 (mGluR5) antagonists in animal models suggest involvement of mGluR5 in compensatory mechanisms of the basal ganglia circuitry in Parkinson's disease and levodopa (L-Dopa) induced motor complications. This study investigated mGluR5 changes in MPTP lesioned monkeys. The effect of a chronic 1 month treatment with L-Dopa on mGluR5-specific binding and mRNA levels was investigated in MPTP monkeys killed 4 or 24 h after their last L-Dopa administration. [(3)H]ABP688 specific binding in the putamen was elevated i

Striatal morphology in early-onset and late-onset Alzheimer's disease: a preliminary study.

We investigated volume and shape changes in the striatum (caudate, putamen, and nucleus accumbens) of 18 early-onset (EOAD) and 18 late-onset (LOAD) Alzheimer's Disease patients compared with 2 control groups age- and sex-matched to each patient group, and explored the relationship between striatal atrophy and apolipoprotein E (APOE) genotype. EOAD patients showed significant shape changes in the left and right ventral putamen (p < 0.05, corrected for multiple comparison with permutation tests). LOAD patients showed significant reductions in the left and right nucleus accumbens volumes (p < 0.

Alterations in striatal and extrastriatal D-1 and D-2 dopamine receptors in the MPTP-treated common marmoset: an autoradiographic study.

In adult common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus), MPTP (1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine) treatment induced almost total depletion of cells in the substantia nigra pars compacts (SNc) but partial cell loss in the ventral tegmental area (VTA). There was severe depletion of [3H]-mazindol binding to dopamine (DA) uptake sites in the caudate, putamen, and SNc. The loss of [3H]-mazindol binding in the nucleus accumbens (NAc) and olfactory tubercle (OT) was less marked. [3H]-mazindol binding in the body of caudate nucleus showed a small but significant recovery with increasing post-lesion

A rare case of pituitrin-induced delayed encephalopathy.

A 26-year-old girl was admitted to the Neurological Department of The First Teaching Hospital of Jilin University with complaints of rapidly deteriorating speech clumsiness for 18 days. Five Days before her attack she had undergone intramuscular pituitrin therapy on account of recurrent haemoptysis. Cranial MRI revealed multiple abnormal signals in bilateral hemisphere and symmetric abnormal signal in bilateral caudate nucleus and putamen. Serum electrolyte analysis revealed mild hyponatremia. The abnormal signals in bilateral hemisphere almost disappeared after 7 days of cerebral circulation

Positron emission tomography shows reduced striatal dopamine D1 but not D2 receptors in juvenile neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis.

We studied striatal dopamine D1 and D2 receptors in patients with juvenile neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (JNCL) with positron emission tomography (PET) using a dopamine D1 receptor antagonist [11C]NNC 756 and a dopamine D2 receptor antagonist [11C]raclopride as ligands. The mean [11C]NNC 756 uptake value in JNCL was reduced by 15 % from the mean control value in the putamen (p < 0.01) and by 13 % in the caudate nucleus (p < 0.01). The mean [11C]raclopride uptake in JNCL patients was not significantly different from the mean of the control group either in the putamen or the caudate nucleus. Ou
