AIM OF STUDY: To study of neoplastic transformation of the epithelial cells of the oral mucosa with verrucous hyperortokeratosis, verrucous carcinoma and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Oral mucous membrane biopsies of 33 patients with clinical diagnosis of proliferative verrucous leukoplakia were investigated. Histologically in 19 cases (57.6%) was revealed verrucous hyperorthokeratosis, in 8 cases (24.2%) - verrucous carcinoma and in 6 cases (18.2%) - oral squamous cell carcinoma. Epstein-Barr virus has been associated to several forms of neoplasia including Burkitt's lymphoma, B lymphomas in immuno-compromised patients and undifferentiated nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Immunodepression, genetic and/or environmental factors and the expression of several viral genes (latent genes mainly) may contribute to these pathologies. In vitro, several latent proteins (EBNA 1, 2, 3A, 3C, 5 et LMP-1) directly or indirectly contribute to the initiation and maintenance of the transformation process. The role of these proteins is discussed in the present article.

Avian sarcoma virus 17 (ASV17) is an acutely transforming retrovirus which carries the oncogene v-jun. The virus induces fibrosarcomas in chickens at the site of inoculation. Here we describe wound-related tumor formation in 77% of chickens inoculated with ASV17 in one wing and wounded by metal clip insertion in the opposite wing. Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) consists of heterogeneous histological architecture mixed with epithelioid and mesenchymal forms. Von Meyenburg complex (VMC) is generally thought to be benign, although its preneoplastic potential for intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCC) has been a subject of contention. We retrospectively reviewed 86 hepatectomy specimens with a diagnosis of iCC. Morphologically, an association between iCC and VMC was appreciated in 35% of cases that illustrated a gradual neoplastic progression from benign VMC to dysplasia and then to iCC. Previous transgenic work demonstrated transforming activity of the human T-cell leukemia virus type I Tax protein in fibroblasts. In the present study, a Thy-1-based vector was used to express Tax in thymocytes. Quantitative and qualitative investigations of the erythropoiesis in the sternal marrow of untreated 52 patients with a plasmacytoma and 46 patients with a chronic lymphatic leukaemia resulted in about half the cases in an indicated or more distinct megaloblastic disturbance of maturation in a part of the erythroblasts. These changes of the erythroblastic cells might be the expression of a neoplastic transformation and of a disturbance of the differentiation of the pluripotent stem cells in these diseases.

We report on two patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) who presented blastic transformation involving the skin, with leukemic infiltrates showing unusual morphologic and immunohistologic characteristics. A 60-year-old woman was admitted in August 1995 complaining of abdominal pain. A diagnosis of essential thrombocythemia had been made in 1987, and myelofibrosis developed in the patient thereafter. Physical examination revealed massive hepatosplenomegaly, and the peripheral blood showed leukoerythroblastosis with chromosomal abnormalities in peripheral blood cells. In May, 1996, blastic transformation occurred. Based on the findings of surface marker analysis, the blasts met the diagnostic criteria for acete myelogenous leukemia because they were negative for peroxidase and positive for CD13.

BACKGROUND: Central giant cell granuloma (CGCG) is a rare, non-neoplastic, benign lesion that exhibits expansive and osteolytic biological behavior. CGCG treatment and management is challenging for clinicians.
