A comparative analysis of disability measures in Cameroonian surveys.

BACKGROUND: Although identifying vulnerable groups is an important step in shaping appropriate and efficient policies for targeting populations of disabled people, it remains a challenge. This study aims to evaluate for the first time the comparability of the different disability measurements used in Cameroon. This is done by comparing them with the international standards proposed by the Washington Group (WG). It also evaluates the consistency of the association between the disability as measured by these surveys and the sociodemographic characteristics. METHOD: We used data from the third C

Neighborhood physical conditions and health.

OBJECTIVES: We explored the relationship between boarded-up housing and rates of gonorrhea and premature mortality. METHODS: In this ecological study of 107 US cities, we developed several models predicting rates of gonorrhea and premature death before age 65 from all causes and from specific causes. We controlled for race, poverty, education, population change, and health insurance coverage. RESULTS: Boarded-up housing remained a predictor of gonorrhea rates, all-cause premature mortality, and premature mortality due to malignant neoplasms, diabetes, homicide, and suicide after control for

Ascertainment of a mid-western US female adolescent twin cohort for alcohol studies: assessment of sample representativeness using birth record data.

Female twin pairs were identified from birth records, and their families invited to participate in a prospective study of the determinants of alcohol problems in women. We investigated sampling biases arising because of failure to locate families, or non-cooperation of families. Out of 2644 families with a live-born pair (born between July 1975 and December 1986) who survived beyond infancy, contact was established and a brief screening interview completed with 90% (N = 2380). Fewer than 6% of located families declined to participate in the initial screening interview. Predictors of failure to

Heterogeneous and dynamic lung cancer mortality among immigrants relative to native-born populations in France, 2000-2021.

Immigrants tend to have lower lung cancer mortality compared to natives, with some exceptions by region of birth. To date, findings on cancer mortality among immigrants in Europe show that cancer mortality trends vary by host country, region of birth, sex, and cancer type. We aim to describe immigrant lung cancer mortality relative to natives and disparities by region of birth, clarify the role of social factors, and assess temporal trends. We used data from France's national mortality registry and population censuses to evaluate immigrant and native lung cancer mortality rates for the 2000-20

Searching for the forest ghosts: group counts and polyspecific associations of the endangered Rungwecebus kipunji in the Udzungwa Mountains, Tanzania.

The IUCN-Endangered kipunji (Rungwecebus kipunji) is one of Africa's rarest primates, restricted to two isolated populations in Tanzania. The Udzungwa population is enigmatic, confined to a small area within a large, old-growth forest and consists of fewer than 100 individuals. Apart from baseline data from 2006, ecological knowledge remains scant. We present new data from three standardized sweep censuses conducted between 2013 and 2024 in Ndundulu forest along 42-45 linear transects of 2 km in length. Per census, only 4 to 6 kipunji groups were recorded, within a range of 10.42 km2 which inc

Incidence patterns and temporal trends of breast, prostate, oesophageal and cervical cancer in rural Eastern Cape Province, South Africa 1998-2021.

BACKGROUND: In South Africa, prostate, breast, and cervical cancers are prioritised under the National Cancer Strategic Framework (2017-2022), while oesophageal cancer remains a major public health concern in the Eastern Cape Province. This study describes the incidence patterns and temporal trends of breast, cervical, prostate, and oesophageal cancers in the Eastern Cape from 1998 to 2021. METHODS: Cancer incidence data were obtained from the Eastern Cape Population-Based Cancer Registry for 1998-2021. Population denominators were derived from the 2001 and 2011 national censuses, with interc

Dengue and malaria mortality in Ecuador: A population analysis of hospital deaths across 24 provinces, 2015-2023.

BACKGROUND: Dengue and malaria remain critical vector-borne threats in Latin America, yet mortality surveillance at subnational levels is sparse. Ecuador, a country with diverse ecological zones and shifting transmission dynamics, lacks standardized hospital-based mortality indicators to guide targeted interventions. OBJECTIVE: To analyze age-standardized hospital mortality rates for dengue and malaria across Ecuador's 24 provinces from 2015 to 2023, identifying geographic disparities, temporal trends, and surveillance gaps. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional ecological study using anon

Occupational exposure to pesticides in mothers and fathers and risk of cancer in the offspring: A register-based case-control study from Sweden (1960-2015).

Maternal and paternal occupational exposure to pesticides was linked to leukemia in the offspring in some previous studies. Risks for other cancers, particularly from maternal exposure, are largely unknown. We examined the association between maternal and paternal exposure to pesticides and childhood cancer in a Swedish register-based case-control study (1960-2015). Cancer cases <20 years old were identified from the Cancer Register (n = 17313) and matched to controls (1:25) on birth year and sex. Employment history of each biological parent around the child's birth was retrieved from six cens

A Bayesian approach for estimating typhoid fever incidence from large-scale facility-based passive surveillance data.

Decisions about typhoid fever prevention and control are based on estimates of typhoid incidence and their uncertainty. Lack of specific clinical diagnostic criteria, poorly sensitive diagnostic tests, and scarcity of accurate and complete datasets contribute to difficulties in calculating age-specific population-level typhoid incidence. Using data from the Strategic Typhoid Alliance across Africa and Asia program, we integrated demographic censuses, healthcare utilization surveys, facility-based surveillance, and serological surveillance from Malawi, Nepal, and Bangladesh to account for under

Characterising variability and predictors of infant mortality in urban settings: findings from 286 Latin American cities.

BACKGROUND: Urbanisation in Latin America (LA) is heterogeneous and could have varying implications for infant mortality (IM). Identifying city factors related to IM can help design policies that promote infant health in cities. METHODS: We quantified variability in infant mortality rates (IMR) across cities and examined associations between urban characteristics and IMR in a cross-sectional design. We estimated IMR for the period 2014-2016 using vital registration for 286 cities above 100 000 people in eight countries. Using national censuses, we calculated population size, growth and three

Occupational exposure to organic dusts and risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis: findings from a Swedish population-based case-control study.

OBJECTIVES: We estimated the association between occupational exposures to five different organic dusts: wood, animal, paper, textile and flour dust and the risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis (RA). METHODS: This population-based case-control study analysed 12 582 incident cases and 129 335 controls. Participants were identified from national public authority and quality registers. Census data on occupations were collected 1960-2010 and we estimated the exposure to organic dust with the help of job-exposure matrices. We used logistic regression to assess the OR of seropositive or seronega

Building Ventilation as an Effective Disease Intervention Strategy in a Dense Indoor Contact Network in an Ideal City.

Emerging diseases may spread rapidly through dense and large urban contact networks, especially they are transmitted by the airborne route, before new vaccines can be made available. Airborne diseases may spread rapidly as people visit different indoor environments and are in frequent contact with others. We constructed a simple indoor contact model for an ideal city with 7 million people and 3 million indoor spaces, and estimated the probability and duration of contact between any two individuals during one day. To do this, we used data from actual censuses, social behavior surveys, building

Tuberculin status, socioeconomic differences and differences in all-cause mortality: experience from Norwegian cohorts born 1910-49.

BACKGROUND: From 1948 to 1975, Norway had a mandatory tuberculosis (TB) screening programme with Pirquet testing, X-ray examinations and BCG vaccination. Electronic data registration in 1963-75 enabled the current study aimed at revealing (i) the relations between socioeconomic factors and tuberculosis infection and (ii) differences in later all-cause mortality according to TB infection status. METHODS: TB screening data were linked to information from the Norwegian Cause of Death Registry (1975-98) and the National Population and Housing Censuses (1960, 1970 and 1980). Analyses were done for

Fatal occupational injuries in a southern state.

Fatal occupational injuries were studied using data from medical examiners' reports in North Carolina for the years 1977-1991. Cases were defined as deaths due to accidents or homicide at the workplace, and populations at risk were estimated from the 1980 and 1990 US Censuses. Mortality rate ratios and proportionate mortality ratios were used as measures of association, and the population attributable risk percentage was used as an indicator of the burden of injury. Standard weights for direct age-adjustment of rates were obtained from the total state workforce. There were 2,524 eligible death

Reconstructing severe acute respiratory infection dynamics from ICD-10 hospital discharge data: a 10-year analysis of 11.2 million discharges in Ecuador, 2014-2023.

BACKGROUND: In many low- and middle-income countries, surveillance of severe acute respiratory infections (SARI) relies on administrative hospital data without virological confirmation, and its ability to capture epidemic dynamics and age-specific burden remains uncertain. METHODS: We analyzed 11,232,698 hospital discharges recorded by Ecuador's National Institute of Statistics and Censuses between 2014 and 2023, identified SARI episodes using International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision (ICD-10) codes under broad and length-of-stay-restricted case definitions, and incorporated a n
