CASE: Three patients who underwent uncomplicated total knee arthroplasty with use of the Prineo (Ethicon) wound-closure system had development of allergic contact dermatitis. All patients were started on Keflex (cephalexin), and two were started on topical corticosteroid. In all patients, the reaction resolved within weeks.

A 4-year-old spayed female domestic shorthair cat was presented to us for swelling of all foot pads. The skin lesions were histopathologically diagnosed as suppurative pyogranulomatous panniculitis. In 1990, we isolated 158 strains of Salmonella typhi from blood cultures of patients suffering from typhoid fever. Seventy nine (50%) of these isolates were found to be simultaneously resistant to chloramphenicol, ampicillin and cotrimoxazole. These strains were also resistant to streptomycin and tetracycline, but sensitive to gentamicin, amikacin and cephalexin. BACKGROUND: Rat bite fever (RBF) is a rare systemic febrile illness transmitted by rats. Streptobacillus moniliformis is a pleomorphic Gram-negative bacillus which is the usual etiologic organism for rat bite fever in the United States.
CASE PRESENTATION: Here we present a case of rat bite fever complicated by vertebral osteomyelitis and discitis. The patient revealed an exposure history of being bitten by pet rats. The patient's symptoms dramatically improved with a six-week course of cephalexin therapy.

Either 500 mg cefaclor or amoxycillin was administered at random thrice daily to 50 adult outpatients with acute or acute-to-chronic bronchitis. A total of 31 pathogens were isolated from sputum, mostly Streptococcus pneumoniae [17] or Haemophilus influenzae [3], or both [2]. All pathogens but one were susceptible to cefaclor; all but six were susceptible to amoxycillin. Satisfactory clinical results were obtained in 62.5% of the patients treated with cefaclor and 66% of the patients treated with amoxycillin.
