Effect of maxillary osteotomy on subsequent craniofacial growth in adolescent monkeys.

LeFort I osteotomy was performed on seven adolescent Macaca fascicularis monkeys to study its effect on the subsequent dentocraniofacial growth. Eight adolescent monkeys were used as controls. Tantalum implants were inserted at predetermined areas in certain craniofacial bones of all monkeys. For stereometric cephalometry, implants were placed in both the left and right sides of the facial bones. Lateral cephalometric radiographs of all monkeys were taken prior to and immediately after metallic implant placement, immediately after maxillary osteotomy, and thereafter every 4 weeks during the po

Determination of fetal maturity and of development of the fetal lungs by means of combined methods.

The validity of the assessment of the fetal age and pulmonary maturity was evaluated on 369 patients at various stages of normal pregnancy and complicated by diabetes, toxemia and fetal anencephaly. Gestational maturity was assessed by ultrasonic measurement of the fetal biparietal diameter and by analysing constituents of amniotic fluid (creatinine, bilirubin, fat cells) while pulmonary maturity was assessed from the L/S ratio in the amniotic fluid. Each individual method has a wide margin of error, however, ultrasound cephalometry gave the best prediction for determination of fetal age. In 1

Super-Passive Alveolar Correcting Equipment (SPACE): a novel presurgical cleft device with 5-year outcomes following one-stage repair.

In patients with unilateral cleft lip, alveolus, and palate (U-CLAP), wide clefts negatively affect facial aesthetics, alveolar alignment, and speech. Although various presurgical orthopedic devices have been used, none reliably achieve substantial cleft narrowing. This study introduces the Super-Passive Alveolar Correcting Equipment (SPACE), a molar-supported passive plate that significantly reduces cleft width, narrowing the mean alveolar gap to 1.87 mm before surgery (n = 83). SPACE enabled a one-stage repair - lip repair, gingivoperiosteoplasty, and palatoplasty - performed at approximatel

Beta-tricalcium phosphate patient-specific gap implants in bilateral sagittal split osteotomy: an innovative treatment method to enhance the mandibular border contour. Part 2: accuracy and quantitative assessment.

In the first part of this study (Part 1), the use of beta-tricalcium phosphate patient-specific gap implants (β-TCP gap-PSIs) during bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO) showed potential in preventing antegonial notching. The second part of the study was performed to evaluate the accuracy of β-TCP gap-PSIs placement within the BSSO gaps and to conduct a long-term quantitative assessment. Twelve patients who received β-TCP gap-PSIs between July 2017 and July 2018 were followed radiologically for 3-4 years (mean 45.7 ± 7.9 months). Cone beam computed tomography was used to perform 3D cephal

Management of pharyngeal flap in cleft orthognathic surgery: speech outcomes and skeletal stability.

The decision to either preserve or divide the pharyngeal flap during cleft orthognathic surgery (OGS) involves balancing maxillary advancement and maintaining velopharyngeal function. In this study, post-OGS velopharyngeal function and maxillary relapse were compared between patients with preserved and divided pharyngeal flaps. A retrospective review was conducted of cleft patients with a previous pharyngeal flap who underwent OGS between 2016 and 2020. Skeletal changes were evaluated via lateral cephalometry at three time-points: preoperative, immediately postoperative, and 1 year postoperati

Adenotonsillar hypertrophy as a risk factor of dentofacial abnormality in Korean children.

No studies for the role of adenotonsillar hypertrophy in development of dentofacial abnormalities have been performed in Asian pediatric population. Thus, we aimed to investigate the relationship between adenotonsillar hypertrophy and dentofacial abnormalities in Korean children. The present study included consecutive children who visited a pediatric clinic for sleep-disordered breathing due to habitual mouth breathing, snoring or sleep apnea. Their palatine tonsils and adenoids were graded by oropharyngeal endoscopy and lateral cephalometry. Anterior open bite, posterior crossbite, and Angle'

Mouth closing device (chinstrap) reduces mouth leak during nasal CPAP.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Mouth leak occasionally complicates continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy, which leads to discomfort. While a chinstrap prevents the mouth from opening during sleep, its efficacy in diminishing mouth leak has not been studied. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Fifteen patients with mouth leak complaining of mouth dryness and nasal obstruction underwent two consecutive overnight polysomnographies, one with a chinstrap, in random order. Cephalometry with and without a chinstrap was randomly performed on six patients. RESULTS: With the chinstrap, both mouth leak and the

Craniofacial suture stenosis: morphologic effects.

Craniofacial anomalies, such as Apert's and Crouzon's syndromes, are presumed to be related to premature growth arrest of cranial base growth sites. However, premature growth arrest at cranial vault sutures in animals appears to play a causative role in the development of cranial deformities characteristic of single-suture, or simple, craniosynostosis in humans. To study the possible causative role of cranial vault and other (interface) suture stenoses on the development of craniofacial deformity, a vault suture and an interface suture between the cranial vault and facial skeleton were simulta

[Comparison of facial asymmetry assessment by frontal teleradiography and 3D imaging].

INTRODUCTION: The diagnostic approach to facial asymmetries is classically based, in addition to the clinical examination, on a cephalometric analysis carried out on a frontal radiography. Planning of orthognathic surgery requires a three-dimensional (3D) examination to visualize deformities. Nevertheless, the use of cephalometric analysis on 3D imaging remains clinically modest. The main objective of this study was to compare the cephalometric measures obtained from frontal radiographies and 3D imaging in patients with facial asymmetries. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Frontal radiographies and 3D CT

Craniofacial and three-dimensional palatal analysis in cleft lip and palate patients treated in Spain.

Growth alterations have been described in patients operated on for oral clefts. The purpose of this work was to analyze the craniofacial and palate morphology and dimensions of young adults operated on for oral clefts in early childhood in Spain. Eighty-three patients from eight different hospitals were divided into four groups based on their type of cleft: cleft lip (CL, n = 6), unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP, n = 37), bilateral cleft lip and palate (BCLP, n = 16), and cleft palate only (CPO, n = 24). A control group was formed of 71 individuals. Three-dimensional (3D) digital models w

Selection of a horizontal reference plane in 3D evaluation: Identifying facial asymmetry and occlusal cant in orthognathic surgery planning.

Facial asymmetry and dental occlusal cant have been detected in two-dimensional cephalometry using different horizontal reference lines, but equivalent 3-dimensional (3D) reference planes have not been thoroughly investigated. In this study, 3D cone-beam computed tomography scans of 83 consecutive patients were evaluated using a standardized 3D frame and three horizontal reference planes, Supraorbitale (Sor), Frontozygomatic (Z), and Frankfurt horizontal (FH) for cant detection. Canting was defined as a vertical difference between left and right sides of 2 mm or more, and in at least two inves

Craniofacial morphology in patients with Kallmann's syndrome with and without cleft lip and palate.

OBJECTIVE: Kallmann's syndrome is characterized by the association of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism and anosmia or hyposmia. The principal endocrine defect of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism is a failure to secrete luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH), resulting in underdevelopment of the pituitary gonadotropes and an inability to synthesize and release luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone. The purpose of the present investigation was to describe the dentition and the craniofacial morphology in patients diagnosed with Kallmann's syndrome. DESIGN: The sample consisted of
