Mapping repetition suppression of the P50 evoked response to the human cerebral cortex.

OBJECTIVE: The cerebral network subserving repetition suppression (RS) of the P50 auditory evoked response as observed using paired-identical-stimulus (S1-S2) paradigms is not well-described. METHODS: We analyzed S1-S2 data from electrodes placed on the cortices of 64 epilepsy patients. We identified regions with maximal amplitude responses to S1 (i.e., stimulus registration), regions with maximal suppression of responses to S2 relative to S1 (i.e., RS), and regions with no or minimal RS 30-80 ms post stimulation. RESULTS: Several temporal, parietal and cingulate area regions were shown to h

Abnormal development of the cerebral cortex and cerebellum in the setting of lamin B2 deficiency.

Nuclear lamins are components of the nuclear lamina, a structural scaffolding for the cell nucleus. Defects in lamins A and C cause an array of human diseases, including muscular dystrophy, lipodystrophy, and progeria, but no diseases have been linked to the loss of lamins B1 or B2. To explore the functional relevance of lamin B2, we generated lamin B2-deficient mice and found that they have severe brain abnormalities resembling lissencephaly, with abnormal layering of neurons in the cerebral cortex and cerebellum. This neuronal layering abnormality is due to defective neuronal migration, a pr

Novel markers reveal subpopulations of subplate neurons in the murine cerebral cortex.

The subplate lays the foundation of the developing cerebral cortex, and abnormalities have been suggested to contribute to various brain developmental disorders. The causal relationship between cellular pathologies and cognitive disorders remains unclear, and therefore, a better understanding of the role of subplate cells in cortical development is essential. Only by determining the molecular taxonomy of this diverse class of neurons can we identify the subpopulations that may contribute differentially to cortical development. We identified novel markers for murine subplate cells by comparing

Aquaporin expression in the cerebral cortex is increased at early stages of Alzheimer disease.

Abnormalities in the cerebral microvasculature are common in Alzheimer disease (AD). Expression levels of the water channels aquaporin 1 and aquaporin 4 (AQP1, AQP4) were examined in AD cases by gel electrophoresis and Western blotting, and densitometric values normalized with beta-actin were compared with corresponding values in age-matched controls processed in parallel. In addition, samples of cases with Pick disease (PiD) were examined for comparative purposes. A significant increase in the expression levels of AQP1 was observed in AD stage II (following Braak and Braak classification). In

Dopamine activity changes in cerebral cortex in the course of experimental acute pancreatitis.

UNLABELLED: Dopamine (DA) is biogenic amine that in the central (CNS) and peripheral nervous system plays an important role as a neurotransmitter and neuromediator. Dopamine neurones in CNS are responsible for regulating motor and emotional processes, higher psychological activities and hormone secretion. Acute pancreatitis (AP) is a general disease condition caused by pancreas extrasecretory cell damage which leads to self-digestion. One of its results is encephalopathy in consequence of shock symptoms, intravascular clotting, brain tissue ischaemia etc. The study has aimed at analysis of cha

Distribution of tuft-shaped astrocytes in the cerebral cortex in progressive supranuclear palsy.

The deposition of abnormal levels of tau protein is a major neuropathological feature of progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), and the presence of tuft-shaped astrocytes is a neuropathological hallmark of PSP. We examined the topographic distribution of tuft-shaped astrocytes in the cerebral hemisphere by Gallyas-Braak silver staining in three Japanese autopsy cases of typical PSP. The distribution of tuft-shaped astrocytes was relatively uniform between cases. Tuft-shaped astrocytes were identified predominantly in posterior frontal areas such as the precentral gyrus and premotor and suppleme

Effects of repeated anaesthesia on central cholinergic function in the rat cerebral cortex.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: General anaesthesia may contribute to postoperative cognitive decline in the elderly. The aim was to determine the effects of repeated pentobarbital anaesthesia throughout life on central cholinergic function in the rat. METHODS: Young Lewis rats were randomly allocated to two groups. The anaesthesia group (n = 15) was anaesthetized with pentobarbital 20 mg kg(-1) intraperitoneally at 6, 8.5, 11, 13.5, 16, 18.5, 21 and 23.5 months of age. The control group (n = 12) was treated identically, apart from the anaesthesia. At 26 months of age, the animals were killed and t

[Anatomo-functional organization of the neocerebellar control pathways on the cerebral motor cortex].

In a first phase of this study, the topographic arrangement of the dentato-thalamocortical projections was analyzed anatomically in albinos rats, by using anterograde and retrograde tracing methods. By applying intracortical microstimuli through the cerebral motor cortex prior to each microinjection of the tracer, the motor function of each injected cortical site was defined. As a consequence of the precise topographic arrangement of the dentato-thalamocortical pathways, we infer a somatotopic motor organization within the three cytoarchitectonic subdivisions of the cerebellar nucleus laterali

Pure thalamic dementia with a single focus of spongiform change in cerebral cortex.

An absence of spongiform change differentiates the pure thalamic degeneration (PTD) from the thalamic form of Creutzfeldt Jakob Disease (CJD). This report describes a case which in addition to the neuropathological changes typical of primary thalamic degeneration showed a single small focus of spongiform change in the cerebral cortex. The exceptional instances of thalamic degeneration associated with limited spongiform change among which this case is unique by virtue of the size of the single focus of vacuolation probably represent a variant of the thalamic form of CJD. In the context of poten

Temporal sequence of plaque formation in the cerebral cortex of non-demented individuals.

One of the hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease is the presence of argyrophilic plaques (arg-P) accompanying dementia and other forms of cognitive alterations. In the present investigation 195 non-demented, cognitively normal patients were grouped according to the presence or absence of critical coronary artery disease (cCAD), defined as a 75% or greater stenosis of one of the epicardial arteries. None of the subjects had significant cerebral vascular disease. The parahippocampal gyrus (PHG) and frontal pole were analyzed for the presence of arg-P, A4 deposition, ALZ-50 immunoreactive (IR) neurons

Distribution of neurofibrillary tangles and senile plaques in the cerebral cortex in postencephalitic parkinsonism.

Postencephalitic parkinsonism is characterized neuropathologically by severe loss of pigmented neurons in the substantia nigra and the presence of high densities of neurofibrillary tangles in several brainstem structures. In 5 cases of postencephalitic parkinsonism, we observed that the neurofibrillary tangle distribution in the cerebral cortex predominated in the hippocampus and entorhinal cortex. In the prefrontal and inferior temporal cortex, neurofibrillary tangles were preferentially localized in layers II and III. This pattern contrasts with the neurofibrillary tangle distribution observ

Developmental change and molecular properties of somatostatin receptors in the rat cerebral cortex.

The postnatal development and molecular properties of somatostatin receptor were studied in rat cerebral cortex. With [125I-Tyr11]SRIF as a radiolabeled ligand, the specific ligand binding to crude membrane increased transiently in the early phase of postnatal development and then decreased. This increase of somatostatin binding was mainly due to the increased number of binding sites. The two subtypes classified by Tran et al., SSA and SSB, were confirmed and the studies on the relative amount of the subtypes revealed that more SSA subtype was expressed compared with SSB subtype during a week

Effects of prenatal irradiation on the development of cerebral cortex and corpus callosum of the mouse.

Defects of the cerebral cortex and corpus callosum of mice subjected prenatally to gamma irradiation were evaluated as a function of dose and of embryonic age at irradiation. Pregnant mice were exposed to a gamma source at 16, 17, and 19 days of gestation (E16, E17, and E19, respectively), with total doses of 2 Gy and 3 Gy, in order to produce brain defects on their progeny. At 60 postnatal days, the brains of the offspring were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively and compared with those of nonirradiated animals. Mice irradiated at E16 were all acallosal. Those that were exposed to 2 Gy

[Effect of beta-endorphin on catecholamine levels in the rat hypothalamus and cerebral cortex].

The present paper deals with the effect of beta-endorphin on catecholamine content in the hypothalamus and cerebral cortex of male rats. beta-endorphin was found to decrease catecholamine content in the rat brain, with the degree of reduction depending on the brain topography and the time following the peptide administration. 5 min later no changes in catecholamine content were observed either in the hypothalamus or in the cerebral cortex. 20 min later beta-endorphin induced a statistically significant fall of catecholamine concentration in the hypothalamus. A tendency towards its decrease was

Pharmacological characterisation of two tachykinin binding sites in the rat cerebral cortex.

The pharmacological properties of two types of tachykinin receptor were characterised on rat cortical synaptosomes using 125I-Bolton Hunter substance P (125I-BHSP) or with 125I-Bolton Hunter eledoisin (125I-BHE). Shorter SP C-terminal fragments, such as SP (6-11) or (pGlu)-SP (6-11), were more potent than SP itself or longer SP C-terminal fragments in competing for 125I-BHE binding; their efficacy was comparable to that of eledoisin. In contrast, longer SP C-terminal fragments exhibited a higher affinity than shorter ones for the 125I-BHSP binding sites as previously reported. SP N-terminal fr

[Vascular changes in the cerebral cortex in experimental ligation of the superior vena cava].

Venous congestion in the cerebral hemispheres produced by means of the anterior vena cava ligation is accompanied with an uneven character of vascular changes in the hemisphere cortex. Under the same experimental conditions, manifestations of the venous congestion in different animals can have a light, middle and severe degree, each of them being characterized with its own morphological and quantitative peculiarities. The disturbance of the venous outflow from the hemisphere cortex results in certain changes not only in the venous and capillary, but also in the arterial part of the blood bed.

Interactions between cutaneous and muscle afferent projections to cerebral cortex in man.

In order to demonstrate interactions between cutaneous and muscle afferent volleys in the ascending somatosensory pathways, different nerves of the lower limb were stimulated together in a conditioning-test paradigm, the changes in the earliest component of the cerebral potential evoked by the test stimulus being taken to indicate such an interaction. It was first confirmed that the cerebral potential evoked by stimulation of the posterior tibial nerve at the ankle is derived from muscle afferents in the mixed nerve and has shorter latencies than the cerebral potential evoked by purely cutaneo
