These experiments were designed to test the hypothesis that increases in blood flow to the lower brainstem would be greater than forebrain regions during arterial hypercapnia. Total and regional cerebral blood flow (CBF) was measured via the tracer microsphere technique in seven anesthetized New Zealand white rabbits during normocapnia (arterial PCO2 congruent to 40 torr) and hypercapnia (arterial PCO2 congruent to 80 torr). During normocapnia average CBF was 0.77 ml/min/g, and regional measurements of blood flow indicated significantly greater flow to the cerebrum (0.86 ml/min/g) than either

Effects of sympathetic nerves on cerebral blood flow (CBF) during normoxia or hypoxia combined with hemorrhagic hypotension were examined in awake rabbits. One superior cervical ganglion was excised and sham surgery was performed on the other side. Five rabbits each were exposed to normoxia [arterial O2 tension (Pao2) greater than or equal to 78 mmHg] or hypoxia (Pao2 less than or equal to 39 mmHg). Cerebral blood flow was measured with 15-micron microspheres three times in each group: normotension [mean arterial pressure (MAP) 80-86 mmHg]; moderate hypotension (MAP 62-65 mmHg); and severe hyp

Neonatal encephalopathy with seizures (NEwS) is an epileptic encephalopathy with an autosomal recessive inheritance pattern found in Standard Poodle puppies. The causal genetic variant for NEwS has been identified as a homozygous missense mutation in ATF2 (c.152T>G, p.Met51Arg), and a pathological cerebellar change has been reported. Magnetic resonance imaging showed reduced whole-brain size, dilated ventricles, developmental abnormalities of the white matter of the cerebrum, white matter signal abnormalities in the occipital lobe, and abnormal morphology of the cerebellum. Histopathology incl

The polypyrimidine tract binding protein (PTB) and its recently discovered homologue brain-enriched PTB (brPTB) are RNA binding proteins involved in the control of alternative splicing. We have characterized expression patterns of the PTB and brPTB in course of mouse brain development, using mRNA in situ hybridization. PTB is expressed in choroid plexi and ependyma at all the stages of development and temporarily in the mantle layer of migrating neuroblasts of fore-, mid- and hindbrain and in the external granular layer of cerebellum. In the neurons of adult mouse cerebrum and cerebellum expre

We performed a pathologic examination of the brains of three dogs in an epileptic beagle colony. Histologically, all the cases had diffuse astrocytosis in the cerebral cortex and basal ganglia as well as the hippocampus, whereas they showed acute nerve cell change in the hippocampus and some other areas of the cerebrum. One of these animals showed laminar myelin pallor associated with the presence of many vacuoles in the IV to VI layers of the bilateral motor cortices. Most of the vacuoles contained fine granules stained with luxol-fast-blue stain. Ultrastructural examination revealed that som

Morphometric analyses in the early foetal phase (9-13 postconceptional week) are critical for evaluating normal brain growth. In this study, we assessed sequential morphological and morphometric changes in the foetal brain during this period using high-resolution T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans from 21 samples preserved at Kyoto University. MRI sectional views (coronal, mid-sagittal, and horizontal sections) and 3D reconstructions of the whole brain revealed sequential changes in its external morphology and internal structures. The cerebrum's gross external view, lateral ven

AIM: Cerebello-cortical functional dysconnectivity plays a key role in the pathology of schizophrenia (SZ). We aimed to investigate the changes in cerebello-cortical directional connectivity in patients with SZ.
METHODS: A total of 180 drug-naïve patients with first-episode SZ (54 reassessed after 1 year of treatment) and 166 healthy controls (HCs) were included. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging was used to perform Granger causal analysis, in which each of the nine cerebellar functional systems was defined as a seed. Brain morphology is tightly regulated by diverse signaling pathways. Hedgehog signaling is a candidate pathway considered responsible for regulating brain morphology. Nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS), caused by a PTCH1 mutation in the hedgehog signaling pathway, occasionally exhibits macrocephaly and medulloblastoma. Although cerebellar enlargement occurs in ptch1 heterozygous-deficient mice, its impact on human brain development remains unknown. We investigated the brain morphological characteristics of children with NBCCS. We evaluated brain T1-weighted images from nine children

Cerebrovascular complications and increased risk of encephalopathies are characteristic of preeclampsia and contribute to 40% of preeclampsia/eclampsia-related deaths. Circulating tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) is elevated in preeclamptic women, and infusion of TNF-α into pregnant rats mimics characteristics of preeclampsia. While this suggests that TNF-α has a mechanistic role to promote preeclampsia, the impact of TNF-α on the cerebral vasculature during pregnancy remains unclear. We tested the hypothesis that TNF-α contributes to cerebrovascular abnormalities during placental ischemia by f

A 50-year-old man was admitted to our hospital, because of weakness in his right leg. On admission, he had generalized hyperreflexia and positive Babinski signs bilaterally. After admission, weakness in his left leg and confusion developed. A cerebrospinal fluid examination revealed increases in cell counts and protein but was negative for malignant cells. Blood chemistry was normal except for elevated LDH. A bone marrow biopsy yielded lymphoma cells. Successive T2-weighted cranial MRI showed a progressively expanding high signal area in the right parieto-occipital lobe. His confusional state

BACKGROUND: Essential tremor (ET) is one of the most prevalent neurological diseases and is recognized as a disorder involving multiple neural network dysfunctions. Previous resting-state fMRI studies in ET ignored brain network important dynamic nature. This study aimed to investigate the alterations of dynamic functional connectivity (DFC) and its functional topology in ET.
METHODS: Resting-state fMRI data were collected from 144 ET and 131 normal controls (NC). Sliding-window approach with K-means clustering algorithm was used to identify dynamic functional states and graph theory analysis

Metachromatic leukodystrophy (MLD) is an inherited lysosomal storage disorder characterized by arylsulfatase A (ASA) deficiency, leading to sulfatide accumulation and myelin degeneration in the central nervous system. While primarily considered a white matter (WM) disease, gray matter (GM) is also affected in MLD, and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) may have limited effect on GM atrophy. We cross-sectionally and longitudinally studied GM volumes using volumetric MRI in a cohort of 36 (late-infantile, juvenile and adult type) MLD patients containing untreated and HSCT treated sub

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) could assist in identifying objective biomarkers and follow-up study could effectively improve subjective diagnostic accuracy. By combining MRI with follow-up, this study aims to determine the shared and distinct alterations between major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder (BD).
METHODS: Untreated patients with MDD experiencing the first episode were subjected to MRI and subsequent follow-up. Fifteen patients with mania or hypomania were regrouped into BD group. Twenty patients were still grouped as MDD after an average of 37.95 months

Very little is known about the systemic effects caused by Philodryas patagoniensis colubrid snake venom. In this work, this venom was tested for its ability to induce histopathological changes in rats after its intramuscular, subcutaneous or intravenous administration, by light microscopic examination of some organs (cerebellum, cerebrum, lung, liver, kidney and heart). Four rats were used for each dose of 0.23, 0.45 and 0.90 mg of venom in 0.3 ml of phosphate-buffered saline solution (pH 7.4). Aliquots of blood were withdrawn at different time intervals for enzymatic determination of alanine

Carcasses of 13 red-tailed hawks (RTHAs) and 11 Cooper's hawks (COHAs) were tested for West Nile virus (WNV) using WNV-specific reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) on fresh brain tissue and WNV-specific immunohistochemistry (IHC) on various organs. Ten COHAs (91%) and 11 RTHAs (85%) were positive for WNV RNA by RT-PCR. All 11 COHAs (100%) and 10 RTHAs (77%) were positive for WNV antigen by IHC. A triad of inflammatory lesions, including chronic lymphoplasmacytic and histiocytic encephalitis, endophthalmitis, and myocarditis, was common in both species. In COHAs, the heart

Cerebral cortex and cerebellum are essential for sensorimotor control, but the dynamics of their interactions remain unclear. Here, we investigated which pathways prevail during preparation and execution of spontaneous whisker movements in mice. During preparation, neuronal activity of primary motor (M1) and somatosensory (S1) cortex precede that of cerebellar crus regions, with a lead that is consistent with relaying a copy of motor commands. After movement onset, the phase of the signal inverts, indicating a dominant vector signaling from cerebellum to cerebrum. At this stage, Purkinje cell
