The Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO)-Wide Cohort.

The Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO)-Wide Cohort Study (EWC), a collaborative research design comprising 69 cohorts in 31 consortia, was funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 2016 to improve children's health in the United States. The EWC harmonizes extant data and collects new data using a standardized protocol, the ECHO-Wide Cohort Data Collection Protocol (EWCP). EWCP visits occur at least once per life stage, but the frequency and timing of the visits vary across cohorts. As of March 4, 2022, the EWC cohorts contributed data from 60,553 children and c

Maternal vitamin D intakes during pregnancy and child health outcome.

We conducted a follow up of the children in Mongolia whose mothers received one of the three doses of vitamin D (600, 2000, or 4000 IU daily) during pregnancy as part of the randomized, double-blind, clinical trial of vitamin D supplementation to determine their impact on child health to two years. In the parental trial, 119 pregnant women were assigned to 600 IU/day, 121 were assigned 2000 IU/day, and 120 were assigned 4000 IU/day starting at 12-16 weeks' gestation and continuing throughout pregnancy. At baseline, maternal serum 25(OH)D concentrations were similar across arms; 91 % were 50 nm

Adolescent health outcomes: associations with child maltreatment and peer victimization.

BACKGROUND: Child maltreatment (CM) and peer victimization (PV) are serious issues affecting children and adolescents. Despite the interrelatedness of these exposures, few studies have investigated their co-occurrence and combined impact on health outcomes. The study objectives were to determine the overall and sex-specific prevalence of lifetime exposure to CM and past-month exposure to PV in adolescents, and the impact of CM and PV co-occurrence on non-suicidal self-injury, suicidality, mental health disorders, and physical health conditions. METHODS: Adolescents aged 14-17 years (n = 2,910

Instrument for evaluating child hearing health services: construction and validity.

OBJECTIVE: To validate a matrix of indicators to assess the structure and process of child hearing health services. METHOD: A study of semantic and content validation with specialists in the area of Nursing and Speech therapy. The instrument contained 20 indicators with scores to be analyzed by experts. The condition for the validity suitability of each indicator and scores were an Item-level Content Validity Index (I-CVI) of 0.80 and a Scale-level CVI (S-CVI) of 0.80. RESULTS: Twenty-two (22) specialists participated in the study, with 59% being nurses and 41% speech therapists, of which 32

iCHRCloud: Web & Mobile based Child Health Imprints for Smart Healthcare.

Reducing child mortality with quality care is the prime-most concern of all nations. Thus in current IT era, our healthcare industry needs to focus on adapting information technology in healthcare services. Barring few preliminary attempts to digitalize basic hospital administrative and clinical functions, even today in India, child health and vaccination records are still maintained as paper-based records. Also, error in manually plotting the parameters in growth charts results in missed opportunities for early detection of growth disorders in children. To address these concerns, we present I

Impact of vectorborne parasitic neglected tropical diseases on child health.

Chagas disease, leishmaniasis, onchocerciasis and lymphatic filariasis are all vectorborne neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) that are responsible for significant disease burden in impoverished children and adults worldwide. As vectorborne parasitic diseases, they can all be targeted for elimination through vector control strategies. Examples of successful vector control programmes for these diseases over the past two decades have included the Southern Cone Initiative against Chagas disease, the Kala-azar Control Scheme against leishmaniasis, the Onchocerciasis Control Programme and the lympha

Training Mental Health Professionals in Child Sexual Abuse: Curricular Guidelines.

Given the incidence of child sexual abuse in the United States, mental health professionals need training to detect, assess, and treat victims and should possess a clear understanding of the process of victimization. However, many mental health professionals who work with children and families have not been exposed to any training in child sexual abuse during their formal education. This article will examine the need for such training, suggest critical components of child sexual abuse training, and describe various methods of training (e.g., in person, Web-based, and community resources).

Child physical abuse and concurrence of other types of child abuse in Sweden-Associations with health and risk behaviors.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the associations between child physical abuse executed by a parent or caretaker and self-rated health problems/risk-taking behaviors among teenagers. Further to evaluate concurrence of other types of abuse and how these alone and in addition to child physical abuse were associated with bad health status and risk-taking behaviors. METHODS: A population-based survey was carried out in 2008 among all the pupils in 2 different grades (15 respectively 17 years old) in Södermanland County, Sweden (n=7,262). Patterns and trends in causes of child and adolescent mortality 2000-2016: setting the scene for child health redesign.

The under-5 mortality rate has declined from 93 deaths per 1000 live births in 1990 to 39 per 1000 live births in 2018. This improvement in child survival warrants an examination of age-specific trends and causes of death over time and across regions and an extension of the survival focus to older children and adolescents. We examine patterns and trends in mortality for neonates, postneonatal infants, young children, older children, young adolescents and older adolescents from 2000 to 2016. Levels and trends in causes of death for children and adolescents under 20 years of age are based on Uni

Duration of poverty and child health in the Quebec Longitudinal Study of Child Development: longitudinal analysis of a birth cohort.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between duration of poverty and the health of preschool children in the Quebec Longitudinal Study of Child Development birth cohort. METHODS: Data from the Quebec Longitudinal Study of Child Development for 1950 children who were followed annually up to age 3 years were analyzed. Poverty was defined as having an income below the low-income cutoff from Statistics Canada. Five health indicators were examined: asthma attacks, infections, growth delay, a cumulative health-problems index, and maternal perception of the child's

Monitoring physical health in child and adolescent mental health inpatient care: findings from the Y-Health longitudinal feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Young people with serious mental illness (SMI) face significant physical health inequalities, including increased risk of obesity, diabetes, and other preventable conditions, contributing to a 15-20-year reduction in life expectancy. Those in CAMHS inpatient care are particularly vulnerable due to high levels of psychological distress, psychotropic medication, obesogenic environments and high levels of adverse health behaviours. However, research in this setting is limited. This study aimed to assess the feasibility of monitoring physical health in CAMHS inpatient services, changes

The role of fathers in child development from preconception to postnatal influences: Opportunities for the National Institutes of Health Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) program.

A growing body of literature highlights the important role of paternal health and socioemotional characteristics in child development, from preconception through adolescence. Much of this research addresses the indirect effects of fathers, for instance, their influence on maternal behaviors during the prenatal period or via the relationship with their partner. However, emerging evidence also recognizes the direct role of paternal health and behavior for child health and adjustment across development. This critical review presents evidence of biological and sociocultural influences of fathers o

Linking communities and health facilities to improve child health in low-resource settings: a systematic review.

Community-facility linkage interventions are gaining popularity as a way to improve community health in low-income settings. Their aim is to create/strengthen a relationship between community members and local healthcare providers. Representatives from both groups can address health issues together, overcome trust problems, potentially leading to participants' empowerment to be responsible for their own health. This can be achieved via different approaches. We conducted a systematic literature review to explore how this type of intervention has been implemented in rural and low or lower-middle
