BACKGROUND: Annually, 5.4 million children under five face mortality, with 2.5 million deaths in the first month, 1.6 million between one and eleven months, and 1.3 million aged one to four. Despite global strides, sub-Saharan Africa, including Ghana, grapples with persistent high child mortality. This study employs statistical methods to pinpoint factors driving under-five mortality in the Greater Accra Regional Hospital.
METHODS: The data was acquired from Greater Accra Regional Hospital, Ghana, spanning January to December 2020. The data comprised all under-five deaths recorded in the hosp

Mass azithromycin distribution has been shown to reduce all-cause child mortality in several settings in the Sahel by 14-18%. A trial in Niger found that mass azithromycin distribution to children ages 1-59 months old reduced cause-specific mortality because of malaria, dysentery, meningitis, and pneumonia. However, this study was done in the absence of seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC). Here, we assess the effect of mass azithromycin distribution on cause-specific child mortality in a setting receiving SMC. The Child Health with Azithromycin Treatment trial was a cluster-randomized, plac

Pericardiectomy for constrictive pericarditis remains a high-risk operation, and early outcomes are inadequately predicted by conventional cardiac risk models despite the high prevalence of chronic hepatic congestion in this population. We performed a retrospective observational analysis of 104 consecutive patients undergoing isolated pericardiectomy between 2010 and 2024 to determine whether established hepatic scoring systems [Child-Pugh, Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) and Model for End-Stage Liver Disease-Sodium (MELD-Na)] predict early mortality and major postoperative morbidity.

BACKGROUND: Though the socio-economic situation of the Ethiopian household is improving along with the decrease in under-five child mortality. But, under-five mortality is still one of the major problems. Identification of the risk factors change over time which mismatches with the diminishing rate of under-five mortality is important to address the problems.
METHODS: The survey data used for this research was taken from three different Ethiopian Demographic and Health Surveys (2000, 2005 and 2011). This data was used to identify the effect of time varying under-five mortality risk factors. T

This study examines maternal-child health outcomes, specifically infant, under-5, and maternal mortality rates in BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) between 2000 and 2022, segmented into Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) periods. Using Panel Corrected Standard Errors (PCSE) and Panel Quantile Regression estimators, the analysis identifies significant improvements in child mortality outcomes from the MDGs to the SDGs era, reflecting advancements in healthcare infrastructure and enhanced health policies. BACKGROUND & AIMS: Prophylactic use of antibiotics was found to decrease mortality in patients with cirrhosis and acute variceal bleeding (AVB). Patients with Child A cirrhosis have a low risk of treatment failure and mortality. The present study was designed to investigate the association between antibiotics and Child-Pugh A patients with AVB.
METHODS: This retrospective analysis was conducted on Child-Pugh class A cirrhotic patients presenting with AVB at West China Hospital between January 2016 and November 2022. The outcome indicators evaluated in this study include the rate of treatment

BACKGROUND: Under-five mortality remains a critical public health challenge globally, particularly in low- and middle-income countries such as Kenya. Despite recent declines in mortality rates, Kenya continues to face a high burden of child deaths due to preventable or treatable conditions such as pneumonia, malaria, and malnutrition. This study aimed to assess the predictors of under-five mortality in Kenya using the 2022 Kenya Demographic and Health Survey (KDHS) to inform evidence-based interventions and policies.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study utilised the 2022 Kenya Demographic and

BACKGROUND: Cirrhosis increases the risk of perioperative mortality in gastrointestinal surgery. Though cirrhosis is sometimes considered a contraindication to pancreatoduodenectomy (PD), few data are available in this patient population. The aim of the present study is to identify predictors of outcome in cirrhotic patients undergoing PD.
METHODS: Patients undergoing PD with biopsy-proved cirrhosis were evaluated. Primary endpoints were morbidity and mortality. Child score, MELD score, and radiographic evidence of portal hypertension (pHTN) were assessed for accuracy in preoperative risk str

BACKGROUND: Established in 2000, Millennium Development Goal 4 (MDG4) catalysed extraordinary political, financial, and social commitments to reduce under-5 mortality by two-thirds between 1990 and 2015. At the country level, the pace of progress in improving child survival has varied markedly, highlighting a crucial need to further examine potential drivers of accelerated or slowed decreases in child mortality. The Global Burden of Disease 2015 Study (GBD 2015) provides an analytical framework to comprehensively assess these trends for under-5 mortality, age-specific and cause-specific mortal

Cases of child maltreatment are being increasingly reported in Taiwan. However, the trend or changes of child maltreatment in Taiwan are fragmentary and lack empirical evidence. This study analyzed the epidemiological characteristics of substantiated child maltreatment cases from the previous decade, using mortality as an indicator to investigate the care of children who experienced substantiated maltreatment in the past to determine any new developments. Data for analysis and estimates were retrieved from the Department of Statistics in the Ministry of the Interior from 2004 to 2013. Trend an

Israel is home to a child-oriented society that values strong family ties, universal child benefits, and free education for all children from 3 years of age to school grade 12. Alongside the universal health-care services that are guaranteed by the National Health Insurance Law and strong, community-based primary and preventive care services, these values have resulted in good maternal and child health. In 2015, infant and maternal mortality (3·1 deaths per 1000 livebirths and 2·0 deaths per 100 000 livebirths, respectively) were lower than the mean infant and maternal mortality of countries w

BACKGROUND: Twin births present unique challenges for child survival, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Despite the high burden of global child mortality, there has been no comprehensive assessment of twin births and deaths in India. We analysed the trends and patterns in twin births and deaths in India between 1993 and 2021, examining mortality risks across different phases of early childhood, including the late neonatal phase.
METHODS: We analysed data on 659 175 births from five rounds of India's National Family Health Survey (NFHS) (1992-93 to 2019-21). We calculated age-s

WHO recommends vitamin A supplementation (VAS) programmes for children 6-59 months where vitamin A deficiency is a public health problem. However, resources for VAS are falling short of current needs and programme coverage is suffering. The authors present the case for considering the options for shifting efforts and resources from a generalised approach, to prioritising resources to reach populations with continued high child mortality rates and high vitamin A deficiency prevalence to maximise child survival benefits . This includes evaluating where child mortality and/or vitamin A deficiency

Child mortality is a persistent health problem faced by developing nations. In 2000 the United Nations (UN) established a set of high priority goals to address global problems of poverty and health, the Millennium Development Goals, which address extreme poverty, hunger, primary education, child mortality, maternal health, infectious diseases, environmental sustainability, and partnerships for development. Goal 4 aims to reduce by two thirds, between 2000 and 2015, the under-five mortality rate in developing countries. In sub-Saharan Africa from 2000 to 2006 these rates have only been reduced

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Early TIPS placement must be considered in patients with Child-Pugh B and active bleeding at endoscopy or in patients with Child-Pugh C 10-13 and variceal bleeding. However, active bleeding at endoscopy is a subjective criterion. Moreover, a previous study has shown that a MELD-based score accurately predicted 6-week mortality and helped to stratify patients. Using a prospective series of patients included in a multicentre study before the era of early TIPS, we aimed (i) to identify factors associated with 6-week mortality, focusing on the prognostic value of active bleeding

Vitamin A supplementation (VAS), started as a short-term strategy pending dietary improvements, has been implemented in Ethiopia for the last 15 years. We aimed to describe the trends in VAS coverage and estimated the associated reductions in child mortality. VAS coverage data obtained from the District Health Information System and the Demographic and Health Surveys were linked to child mortality data from the United Nations Interagency Group for Child Mortality Estimation (UN IGME). The number of child deaths averted was modelled assuming 12% and 24% reductions in all-cause mortality. From 2
