INTRODUCTION: Recent studies suggest that calcium and 25-[OH]-cholecalciferol represent substantial co-factors in fracture healing. However, there still seems to be no sustainable consensus regarding the influence on fracture healing patterns. In this study, the influence of calcium and vitamin D levels on fracture callus formation was prospectively analysed using pQCT scan.
METHODS: 94 postmenopausal females with distal radius fractures and consecutive surgery were included. Calcium, 25-[OH]-cholecalciferol, parathyroid hormone and bone-specific alkaline phosphatase levels were obtained prio

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D (25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(ОН)D]) deficiency (<20 ng/mL) and insufficiency (20-29 ng/mL) are common in primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT), but data regarding the vitamin D metabolism in this population is limited.
AIM: The aim of this study is to estimate the vitamin D metabolites and their relationship with the main parameters of phosphorus-calcium metabolism in patients with PHPT at baseline and on the background of a single dose of cholecalciferol 150,000 IU.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A single-center interventional, dynamic, prospective, comparative study has been carr

PURPOSE: The impact of vitamin D supplementation on thyroid function is not clear and the relationship between hypovitaminosis D and autoimmune thyroiditis (ATD) incidence and evolution is still a matter of debate. The aim of this study was to retrospectively evaluate the impact of vitamin D supplementation on thyroid function in subjects with and without ATD.
METHODS: One hundred and ninety-eight euthyroid subjects, with diagnosis of "hypovitaminosis D" (<30 ng/mL) who had been taking supplementation therapy with cholecalciferol for different time periods, were included. They were divided in

The vitamin D and microRNA (miR) systems may play a role in the pathogenesis of cardiometabolic disorders, including hypertension. The HYPODD study was a double-blind placebo-controlled trial aiming to assess the effects of cholecalciferol treatment in patients with well-controlled hypertension and hypovitaminosis D (25OHD levels < 50 nmol/L). In addition to this clinical trial, we also evaluated the effects of cholecalciferol and calcitriol treatment on miR-21 expression in vivo and in vitro, respectively. Changes in the cardiovascular risk profiles were evaluated in HYPODD patients treated w

Use of active forms of vitamin D is advocated in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) for treatment of mineral bone disease because of the presumption that native forms of vitamin D would not undergo significant activation to calcitriol, the most active biological form of vitamin D. We present secondary analysis looking at bone turnover in subjects who completed the randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled trial investigating the effect of cholecalciferol supplementation on vascular function in nondiabetic CKD stage G3-G4 and vitamin D ≤20 ng/mL (Clinical Trials Registry of India: CT

OBJECTIVES: High prevalence of vitamin D deficiency mandates prescribing an appropriate form of vitamin D that allows attainment of sufficiency in a cost-effective manner. We aimed to compare vitamin D products in Indian market in terms of composition and cost in 2020 with 2013 to understand price dispersion over 7 years.
METHODS: Constituents, formulations, and prices of 'branded' and generic vitamin D products were sourced from various drug information compendia and online sources. Price per defined daily dose (DDD), percentage cost variation, and change in prices over 7 years (2020 vs. 201

Vitamin D deficiency due to inadequate sun exposure and/or inadequate intake from food is very common worldwide, consisting a major public health problem. As prolonged exposure to ultraviolet radiation involves risks, food fortification of staple foods emerges as a favorable solution for addressing vitamin D deficiency. Bread is a suitable candidate for fortification as it is consumed often and is the main carbohydrate source in European countries. The purpose of this study was the evaluation of the bioavailability of vitamin D from a fortified Greek-type bread that was developed as a means for

As a follow-up to an investigation of 2 dogs that died as a result of apparent toxicosis attributable to a cholecalciferol-containing rodenticide, we tested the toxicity of this product in dogs. Two groups of 2 dogs each were fed amounts of rodenticide that provided 20 and 10 mg of cholecalciferol/kg of body weight (approx one fourth and one eighth of the published LD50, respectively). All dogs developed hypercalcemia and hyperphosphatemia and then died. Major lesions were gastrointestinal hemorrhage, myocardial necrosis, and mineralization of vascular walls. Our data indicate that cholecalcif

UNLABELLED: No data on the pharmacological treatment of normocalcemic hyperparathyroidism (NPHPT) are available. We treated 30 NPHPT postmenopausal women with alendronate/cholecalciferol (treated group) or vitamin D alone (control group). Over 1 year, bone mineral density (BMD) increased significantly in treated group, but not in control group. Both treatments did not affect serum or urinary calcium.
INTRODUCTION: Normocalcemic primary hyperparathyroidism (NPHPT) is defined by normal serum calcium and consistently elevated PTH levels after ruling out the causes of secondary hyperparathyroidis

Individuals with cystic fibrosis (CF) have dysfunctional intestinal microbiota and increased gastrointestinal (GI) inflammation also known as GI dysbiosis. It is hypothesized that administration of high-dose cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) together with a prebiotic (inulin) will be effective, and possibly additive or synergistic, in reducing CF-related GI and airway dysbiosis. Thus, a 2 x 2 factorial design, placebo-controlled, double-blinded, pilot and feasibility, clinical trial was proposed to test this hypothesis. Forty adult participants with CF were block-randomized into one of four groups:

Vitamin D deficiency, cardiovascular disease and abnormal bone mineral metabolism are common in chronic kidney disease (CKD). Abnormal bone mineral metabolism has been linked to vascular calcification in CKD. Sclerostin has emerged as an important messenger in cross talk between bone-vascular axis. We analyzed sclerostin in subjects who participated in the randomized, double blind, placebo controlled trial investigating the effect of cholecalciferol supplementation on vascular function in non-diabetic CKD stage G3-4 and vitamin D ≤ 20 ng/ml [CTRI/2013/05/003648]. Patients were randomized (1:1)

In a review of the literature metabolism, regulation and function of vitamin D and its active metabolites is discussed. Vitamin D is absorbed from the gut and produced in the skin. 25-hydroxylation takes place in the liver, producing 25-hydroxy-vitamin-D. This metabolite is transferred and hydroxylated in the kidney. The most potent cholecalciferol is 1,25-dihydroxy-vitamin-D. This hydroxylation process is regulated by the need of phosphorus and calcium and by calcicotropic hormones, e. g. parathyroid-hormone. The active cholecalciferols regulate intestinal, renal and osseous handling of calci

BACKGROUND: Vitiligo is a depigmenting disorder caused by the destruction of melanocytes by various mechanisms which affect melanocyte function and survival. Different therapeutic approaches for vitiligo include nonsurgical and surgical methods but effective therapy is still challenging. There are few studies that suggest the role of vitamin D analogs in the repigmentation process with encouraging results. To our knowledge, this is the first study to evaluate the effect of topical vitamin D (cholecalciferol) combined with microneedling in the treatment of depigmented patches of vitiligo.
