Although resection of cervical "chondromas" had been reported since the late twenties, the true nature of this condition was not recognized at that time. This paper reports a case of "inferior cervical radiculitis by herniation of nucleus pulposus" operated by Prof. Angelo Chiasserini Sr, one of the founders of Italian neurosurgery, in January 1937. To our knowledge this represents one of the first examples of correct etiopathogenetic interpretation of cervical disc disease. Surgery was followed by excellent recovery, a quite remarkable result in those times. The case history is reported in de

Enchondroma is a benign cartilaginous tumor rarely found in the vertebral column. The authors report a case of a 24-year-old woman with upper extremity paresthesias and weakness secondary to bony destruction of multiple vertebral bodies by an enchondroma. The tumor was treated by block excision of the involved vertebral bodies followed by placement of a bone graft.

We present the case of a man with dyspnea due to a mass in the cricoid cartilage that turns out to be an extramedullary plasmocytoma. Although the patient has a history of multiple myeloma, the disease only rarely affects the cricoid cartilage. Other subglottic lesions possibly involving the cricoid cartilage are squamous cell carcinoma, chondroma, chondrosarcoma and metastasis. The imaging characteristics suggesting extramedullary plasmocytoma arising from the cricoid consist of thinning and expansion of the cartilage laminae without mucosal lesions nor soft tissue mass adjacent to the cricoi

This paper describes a case of Ollier's disease, an uncommon, nonhereditary skeletal disorder affecting enchondral ossification. The patient was referred to our Rehabilitation Unit after resection of scapular chondroma. He had previously been submitted to several surgical treatments for multiple enchondromatosis. Rehabilitation goals were increasing range of motion, relieving pain and training activities of daily living (ADL). After one month treatment, the patient reported pain relief and showed good improvement of articular function and better performances on ADL. According to our experience

We describe a case of a 31-year-old woman with a chondrosarcoma of the hyoid bone. The patient presented with a mass in the left submandibular region. Fine-needle aspiration cytology suggested chondroma, but further imaging investigation with CT revealed an exophytic tumor originating from the body of the hyoid bone. Histopathology of the surgical specimen confirmed the diagnosis of a intermediate-grade chondrosarcoma. Chondrosarcomas account for 11% of all bone cancers. Primary sites of the head and the neck include the nasal cavity, the skull base, the maxilla, the mandible. Chondrosarcomas

The case of a 22-year-old man with synovial chondromatosis (SC) of the shoulder joint is described. A literature review confirmed that SC of the glenohumeral joint is very rare and that the etiology of the disease is still unknown. The diagnosis is often delayed, and the preferred form of management remains controversial. We consider magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) a valuable tool in detecting SC at an early phase and estimating the intrasynovial extent of the disease. Shoulder arthroscopy today represents an elegant treatment option for removing the chondromas and performing a partial synove

Benign cartilaginous tumors of the intraoral soft tissues are rare and are typically seen in the tongue, buccal mucosa, or soft palate. They comprise a diverse group of lesions that are usually defined as cartilaginous choristomas or chondromas. The case reported was located on the palatal maxillary gingiva of the first premolar of a 56-year-old white woman. It appeared as a small firm tumor covered by normal mucosa, with the underlying bone intact on radiographic examination. Histologic examination of the excised lesion revealed a circumscribed mass of cartilaginous tissue with occasional cel

Synovial chondromatosis of the joint is a rare benign condition characterized by the formation of metaplastic cartilage in the synovium of the joint resulting in numerous attached and unattached osteocartilagenous bodies. Involvement of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is uncommon. Arthrotomy is usually applied to remove the larger particles and the affected synovial tissues. The authors report the case of a 48-year-old female with a large solitary synovial chondroma in the left TMJ. The larger mass was removed successfully via an additional incision in the anterior wall of external auditory

This case concerned a female patient with a complaint of pain in the anterior region of her left knee during and after sports activities, followed by joint blockage three months ago. From imaging examinations, simple radiography of the knee was normal and magnetic resonance showed a solid expansive mass, possibly corresponding to soft-tissue chondroma or focal nodular synovitis. Arthroscopic resection of the lesion was performed, and the diagnosis of diffuse giant cell tumor resembling localized pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) was made from the result of the anatomopathological examina

Chondromyxoid fibroma (CMF) is the least common benign cartilaginous tumor, comprising less than 0.5 to 1% of all skeletal neoplasms. This subject was a 16-year-old female with a three-year history of pain involving the distal femoral metaphysis. This case showed an unusual feature: it was intracortical in location. Radiologic differential diagnosis included metaphyseal fibrous defect, periosteal chondroma, simple or aneurysmal bone cyst, and cortical abscess. On operation, the lesion filled the intracortical defect with whitish myxoid soft tissue, bulging into the adjacent soft tissue. Micros

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are the most frequent mesenchymal tumors of the gastrointestinal tract usually occurring in the 6th to 7th decade of life, while their occurrence in children is rare (1-2%). Carney triad (CT), a non-hereditary association of gastric GIST with pulmonary chondroma and/or extraadrenal paraganglioma, is an even much rarer disease (to date ~120 cases reported worldwide) usually affecting young adult females. Pediatric GISTs differ from CT-associated GISTs solely by the absence of other components of the triad and are completely different from spor

We report a rare example of anaemia and hypertension due to an incomplete Carney triad in a 14-year-old girl with no previous medical history. This rare non-familial syndrome generally involves two disparate tumours: gastrointestinal stromal tumour, paraganglioma and/or pulmonary chondroma. The complete triad is a syndrome that involves at least five loci: stomach, oeophagus, lung, the paraganglionic system, adrenal (cortex or medulla). The pathogenesis is unclear as these tumours have different embryological origins. Surgical treatment is necessary, and long-term follow-up is advisable as pat

Ollier's disease, or multiple enchondromatosis, is a deforming dysplastic disease of cartilage, characterized by multiple, asymmetrically distributed intra-osseous cartilaginous masses in the metaphyses and diaphyses of bones. When associated with soft tissue hemangiomas it is referred to as Maffucci's syndrome, in which the enchondromatosis has no unilateral distribution. The emergence of malignant neoplasms, including gliomas, is a well-recognized complication in Maffucci's syndrome. We report a 28-year-old patient with a history of Ollier's disease, who developed two low-grade cerebral glio

The authors present the results of treatment of 10 patients with Ollier's disease using the Ilizarov technique. The Ilizarov device was used to treat leg length discrepancy and to enhance the conversion of chondroma cartilage into normal mature bone, with no curettage and bone grafting. The mean duration of treatment was 9.4 months. This technique was highly efficient in treating the disease. It led to conversion of the abnormal cartilage into histologically mature bone in all patients. Some complications were seen, such as decreased knee mobility, which required prolonged use of the device. T

Based on 57 fibrous metaphyseal defects the conventional radiologic signs are described as diagnostically reliable including asymptomatic patients as well as patients with a history of pain and lesions with positive scintigraphy. The radiologic morphology of the fibrous endosteal and medullary defects differs with the age of the patient. Beyond the age of 18 years there is a sclerosis of the lesion and a less marked arrosion of the corticalis. The differential diagnosis depends on the cortical, endosteal of medullary site of the fibrous defect as well as on the age of patient and includes the
