Climate mitigation contributes more to population persistence than evolutionary adaptation in a long-lived seabird.

Evolutionary rescue-the process by which adaptive evolution prevents population extinction following environmental deterioration -is frequently proposed as a buffer against biodiversity loss under climate change, yet its capacity to alter future population trajectories is rarely assessed quantitatively. Most forecasts of evolutionary rescue rely on simplified demographic models, focus on a single adaptive trait, and explore hypothetical environmental scenarios rather than standardized climate pathways, neglecting uncertainty from demographic and internal climate variability. We developed a hyp

Future climate change likely to reduce the Australian plague locust (Chortoicetes terminifera) seasonal outbreaks.

Climate is a major limiting factor for insect distributions and it is expected that a changing climate will likely alter spatial patterns of pest outbreaks. The Australian plague locust (APL) Chortoicetes terminifera, is the most economically important locust species in Australia. Invasions cause large scale economic damage to agricultural crops and pastures. Understanding the regional-scale and long-term dynamics is a prerequisite to develop effective control and preventive management strategies. In this study, we used a 32-year locust survey database to uncover the relationship between histo

The projected impact of climate change on the burden of Cryptosporidium in Mali, Kenya, and The Gambia.

BACKGROUND: Cryptosporidium is an important cause of moderate-to-severe diarrhea (MSD) among children under five, with the highest burden in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Cryptosporidium is highly climate sensitive, yet there has been no published literature projecting the incidence of Cryptosporidium under climate change in SSA where vulnerability to climate change is highest. METHODS: Utilizing monthly case counts of Cryptosporidium from two case-control studies in The Gambia, Kenya, and Mali, we modeled the relationship between monthly temperature, precipitation, and vulnerability factors with

Using Microsimulation to Estimate the Future Health and Economic Costs of Salmonellosis under Climate Change in Central Queensland, Australia.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of salmonellosis, a costly foodborne disease, is rising in Australia. Salmonellosis increases during high temperatures and rainfall, and future incidence is likely to rise under climate change. Allocating funding to preventative strategies would be best informed by accurate estimates of salmonellosis costs under climate change and by knowing which population subgroups will be most affected. OBJECTIVE: We used microsimulation models to estimate the health and economic costs of salmonellosis in Central Queensland under climate change between 2016 and 2036 to inform pre

Principle-based adept predictions of global warming from climate mean states.

Distinguishing anthropogenic warming from natural variability and reducing uncertainty in global-warming projections continue to present challenges. Here, we introduce a novel principle-based framework for predicting global warming from climate mean states that is based solely on carbon-dioxide-increasing scenarios without running climate models and relying on statistical trend analysis. By applying this framework to the climate mean state of 1980-2000, we accurately capture the subsequent global warming (0.403 K predicted versus 0.414 K observed) and polar warming amplification patterns. Our

Evaluating the impact of climate change on hurricane wind risk: A machine learning approach.

In the residential sector, hurricane winds are a major contributor to storm-related losses, with substantial annual costs to the US economy. With the potential increase in hurricane intensity in changing climate conditions, hurricane impacts are expected to worsen. Current hurricane risk management practices are based on the hurricane risk assessment without considering climate impact, which would result in a higher level of risk for the built environment than expected. It is crucial to investigate the impact of climate change on hurricane risk to develop effective hurricane risk management st

Impact of climate change on the irrigation water demand of rainfed crops in the Southern and Steppe regions of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

Proper management of natural resources is essential to improve agricultural productivity and reduce potential losses. The PROJETA platform provides global climate models regionalized by the ETA model, enabling more accurate climate projections for specific regions. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of climate change on irrigation water demand using three global climate models (CANESM2, HADGEM2-ES, and MIROC5) regionalized by the ETA model for the baseline period (1961-2005) and two future scenarios (RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5). The scenarios were subdivided into three future periods and anal

Projections of increased and decreased dengue incidence under climate change.

Dengue is the world's most prevalent mosquito-borne disease, with more than 200 million people each year becoming infected. We used a mechanistic virus transmission model to determine whether climate warming would change dengue transmission in Australia. Using two climate models each with two carbon emission scenarios, we calculated future dengue epidemic potential for the period 2046-2064. Using the ECHAM5 model, decreased dengue transmission was predicted under the A2 carbon emission scenario, whereas some increases are likely under the B1 scenario. Dengue epidemic potential may decrease und

Spatiotemporal dynamics of forest fires in the context of climate change: a review.

Forest fires are sudden, destructive, hazardous, and challenging to manage and rescue, earning them a place on UNESCO's list of the world's eight major natural disasters. Currently, amid global warming, all countries worldwide have entered a period of high forest fire incidence. Due to global warming, the frequency of forest fires has accelerated, the likelihood of large fires has increased, and the spatial and temporal dynamics of forest fires have shown different trends. Therefore, the impact of climate change on the spatiotemporal dynamics of forest fires has become a hot issue in the field

Systematic review of machine learning approaches for predicting sickle cell crisis and mortality risk at the climate-health nexus.

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell anemia (SCA) is a severe genetic blood disorder characterized by recurrent vaso-occlusive crises and increased mortality, with the greatest burden occurring in low- and middle-income countries. Climatic and environmental conditions, including temperature variability, humidity, rainfall, air pollution, and seasonal changes, have been associated with disease exacerbation. However, the extent to which these factors have been incorporated into predictive models remains unclear. This study systematically reviews the application of machine learning (ML) models for predicting

Exploring the Relationship Between Foodborne Outbreaks and Climate Change Using Social Media Data in the Years 2016-2021.

Evidence suggests that weather affects the incidence of enteric infections, but most foodborne-illness research focuses on short-lived extreme events (e.g., heatwaves and floods) rather than gradual climate variability. A second, related limitation is surveillance under-ascertainment: many mild-to-moderate cases are rarely reported, which constrains our ability to quantify climate-sensitive changes in disease burden. This study addresses these gaps by testing whether symptom-related social media messages can serve as a complementary signal for foodborne illness and, when combined with climate

How will climate change pathways and mitigation options alter incidence of vector-borne diseases? A framework for leishmaniasis in South and Meso-America.

The enormous global burden of vector-borne diseases disproportionately affects poor people in tropical, developing countries. Changes in vector-borne disease impacts are often linked to human modification of ecosystems as well as climate change. For tropical ecosystems, the health impacts of future environmental and developmental policy depend on how vector-borne disease risks trade off against other ecosystem services across heterogeneous landscapes. By linking future socio-economic and climate change pathways to dynamic land use models, this study is amongst the first to analyse and project

From peaks to patches: Hierarchical climate filtering in collared pikas and hoary marmots.

Climate changes are amplified in boreal regions and can disproportionately impact alpine species. Yet predicting how species will respond is difficult due to a complex interplay of scale-dependent factors. For understudied taxa in relatively inaccessible boreal regions, it is particularly challenging to disentangle the drivers of species distributions. Here we utilized an integrated framework to better understand the relative importance of climate and microhabitat in shaping species distributions at different spatial scales. This framework combines landscape-scale generalized linear models of

Climate Anxiety: Current Evidence and Future Directions.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Challenging cognitive, somatic, and behavioral responses to climate change are often conceptualized as climate anxiety (CA). Due to the increased recognition of the impacts of climate change on mental health, a growing body of scientific literature is developing. The purpose of this manuscript is to review the current evidence base for CA and propose future research needs for this emerging construct. RECENT FINDINGS: Early evidence supports underlying psychological mechanisms in the development and maintenance of CA, which are similar to other anxiety-related conditions. Ho

Climate change and children's health.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To present the latest data that demonstrate how climate change affects children's health and to identify the principal ways in which climate change puts children's health at risk. RECENT FINDINGS: Data continue to emerge that further implicate climate change as contributing to health burdens in children. Climate models have become even more sophisticated and consistently forecast that greenhouse gas emissions will lead to higher mean temperatures that promote more intense storms and droughts, both of which have profound implications for child health. Recent climate models s

Climate change and Ixodes tick-borne diseases of humans.

The evidence that climate warming is changing the distribution of Ixodes ticks and the pathogens they transmit is reviewed and evaluated. The primary approaches are either phenomenological, which typically assume that climate alone limits current and future distributions, or mechanistic, asking which tick-demographic parameters are affected by specific abiotic conditions. Both approaches have promise but are severely limited when applied separately. For instance, phenomenological approaches (e.g. climate envelope models) often select abiotic variables arbitrarily and produce results that can b

A continental risk assessment of West Nile virus under climate change.

Since first introduced to North America in 1999, West Nile virus (WNV) has spread rapidly across the continent, threatening wildlife populations and posing serious health risks to humans. While WNV incidence has been linked to environmental factors, particularly temperature and rainfall, little is known about how future climate change may affect the spread of the disease. Using available data on WNV infections in vectors and hosts collected from 2003-2011 and using a suite of 10 species distribution models, weighted according to their predictive performance, we modeled the incidence of WNV und

Climate´s effect on dengue geographical distribution and scenarios from climatic change projections in Cuba: essential elements for a bioclimatic warning system.

INTRODUCTION: A progressive increase in vector-borne infectious diseases is expected in the face of climate variability exacerbated by climate change. Tropical climate conditions favor the proliferation of Aedes aegypti, causing greater risk of dengue spreading. Therefore, taking action to adapt health systems to climate change is a priority. The objective of this study is to determine the geographic distribution of dengue and to projecti its potential changes associated with the impact of climate variability and change. METHODS: An ecological study conducted by combining time series and spat

Susceptible host availability modulates climate effects on dengue dynamics.

Experiments and models suggest that climate affects mosquito-borne disease transmission. However, disease transmission involves complex nonlinear interactions between climate and population dynamics, which makes detecting climate drivers at the population level challenging. By analysing incidence data, estimated susceptible population size, and climate data with methods based on nonlinear time series analysis (collectively referred to as empirical dynamic modelling), we identified drivers and their interactive effects on dengue dynamics in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Climatic forcing arose only whe
