An exploratory analysis of the use of cognitive, adaptive and behavioural indices for cluster analysis of ASD subgroups.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) includes symptoms that vary in severity and frequency between children. Consequently, multiple psychometric assessment procedures are recommended to detect an ASD, including scales which asses the presence and nature of ASD-related behaviour. However, to date, few studies have examined the relative and specific contribution which such behaviourally oriented scales can make to the diagnosis of individual children with ASD. METHOD: Cluster analysis was used to explore the common characteristics of a group of 53 preschool and elementary school children

Comparative analysis of duck Tembusu virus Cluster 1 and Cluster 2.1 in Culex tritaeniorhynchus: Insights into viral characteristics, infectivity, and innate immune response.

The disease caused by the duck Tembusu virus (DTMUV) is one of the most prevalent arthropod-borne viral diseases in poultry. DTMUV is classified into three distinct clusters based on significant genetic divergence: Cluster 1, Cluster 2 (subdivided into 2.1 and 2.2), and Cluster 3. The virulence of DTMUV in ducks is potentially associated with the virus genotype. The evaluation of different clusters of DTMUV is based predominantly on the characterization of infected duck hosts, and limited attention has been paid to understanding viral virulence toward the infected mosquito vectors. In this stu

Cluster Analysis of a Database of Surgically Managed Adult Spine Deformity (ASD) Patients: Determining the Minimal Clinically Important Difference for Each Cluster, Comparing Two Clustering Approaches.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether two clustering approaches applied to the same database would lead to differences in the minimal clinically important difference (MCID) for health-related quality of life parameters (HRQoL). SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Machine learning approaches are being increasingly employed for the analysis of complex and heterogeneous settings such as that of adult spine deformity (ASD). However, it is not yet clear whether and how the choice of number and type of variables impacts the outcomes of a st

Analysis of the audiogram shape in patients with idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss using a cluster analysis.

We performed a cluster analysis to classify the audiogram shape in patients with idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL). We also investigated whether the audiogram shape is a prognostic indicator in the management of ISSNHL. A total of 115 inpatients with ISSNHL treated between 2001 and 2010 were analyzed. The data collected included age, sex, duration of hearing loss at the time of treatment, and the presence or absence of tinnitus, vertigo, diabetes, nystagmus, and canal paresis. A hierarchical cluster analysis was performed using the hearing threshold for each frequency on au

Analysis of intracranial relations in patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate using cluster and factor analysis.

The present investigation was based on the cephalometric analysis of lateral teleroentgenographic pictures of 48 ten-year-old boys with complete unilateral clefts of the lip and palate. Using cluster and factor analysis, the author investigated the relationships among 75 craniofacial size, shape and position characteristics. Both multivariation methods proved useful in the search for associations between partial cranial structures. They supplemented each other well, and their combined use contributed to the definition of the following basic and specific principles of craniofacial relations and

Identifying cognitive subgroups in older adults from community data with hierarchical cluster analysis.

This study applied Ward's hierarchical clustering to detailed neuropsychological data from a community-recruited sample of 180 older adults to identify naturally occurring cognitive subgroups and characterize multidomain cognitive heterogeneity beyond conventional mild cognitive impairment (MCI) criteria. Twenty-two demographically adjusted z-scores spanning memory, language, executive function, and attention/processing speed were submitted to Ward's method, and the resulting four-cluster solution was cross-validated using an independent k-means analysis. The identified subgroups included an a

One or many environmental intolerance(s)? A cluster analysis over two representative samples.

OBJECTIVE: People with symptoms associated with environmental factors (SAEFs) attribute somatic symptoms to chemicals, electromagnetic fields, noise, or other environmental sources. Debates are ongoing whether these different types constitute different disorders ("splitting") or rather different presentations of the same underlying disorder ("lumping"), and which characteristics contribute to this disorder/these disorders. METHODS: To shed further light on this question, we performed a k-prototypes cluster analysis of two representative population-based datasets. We selected 23 clinically rel

Beyond Ammann's pain classification: multidimensional pain phenotyping and cluster analysis in chronic pancreatitis.

Assessment of pain in chronic pancreatitis (CP) has largely focused on intensity and pattern, unable to address its complexity. To evaluate pain in a multidimensional fashion, we aimed to identify phenotypes based on the Comprehensive Pain Assessment Tool Short Form (COMPAT-SF) questionnaire and examine their associations with clinical factors. A cross-sectional study including 248 patients with painful CP from Asia, Europe, and the United States was performed. A cluster analysis including the 5 pain dimensions from the COMPAT-SF questionnaire (severity, fluctuation, provocative factors, sprea

Role of BOLA3 in the mitochondrial Fe-S cluster clarified by metabolomic analysis.

BOLA3 is one of the proteins involved in the assembly and transport of [4Fe-4S] clusters, which are incorporated into mitochondrial respiratory chain complexes I and II, aconitase, and lipoic acid synthetase. Pathogenic variants in the BOLA3 gene cause a rare condition known as multiple mitochondrial dysfunctions syndrome 2 with hyperglycinemia, characterized by life-threatening lactic acidosis, nonketotic hyperglycinemia, and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. The aim of this study was to elucidate the biochemical characteristics of patients with BOLA3 variants and to clarify the role of BOLA3 prot

Inflammatory biomarkers and childhood maltreatment: A cluster analysis in patients with eating disorders.

Eating Disorders (EDs) are severe psychiatric disorders, with growing evidence pointing towards the role of childhood maltreatment (CM) influencing their onset, severity, and response to treatment. Preliminary evidence showed that CM could be associated with an elevation of inflammatory biomarkers across the different EDs. The objective of the study was to elucidate the interplay between CM, ED-specific psychopathology, and inflammatory biomarkers. The study involved 198 female participants, comprising 70 patients with anorexia nervosa (AN), 56 patients with bulimia nervosa (BN), and 72 health

Clinical application of cluster analysis in patients with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes.

AIMS: Early prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is still a huge challenge for patients and clinicians. Recently, a novel cluster-based diabetes classification was proposed which may offer the possibility to solve this problem. In this study, we report our performance of cluster analysis of individuals newly diagnosed with T2DM, our exploration of each subtype's clinical characteristics and medication treatment, and the comparison carried out concerning the risk for diabetes complications and comorbidities among subtypes by adjusting for influencing factors. We hope to p
