Staphylococcus aureus skin and soft tissue infection is a common ailment placing a large burden upon global healthcare infrastructure. These bacteria are growing increasingly recalcitrant to frontline antimicrobial therapeutics like vancomycin due to the prevalence of variant populations such as methicillin-resistant and vancomycin-resistant strains, and there is currently a dearth of novel antibiotics in production. Additionally, S. aureus has the capacity to hijack the host clotting machinery to generate fibrin-based biofilms that confer protection from host antimicrobial mechanisms and anti

Pet food have been considered as possible vehicles of bacterial pathogens. The sudden boom of the pet food industry due to the worldwide increase in companion animal ownership calls for pet food investigations. Herein, this study aimed to determine the frequency, antimicrobial susceptibility profile, and molecular characteristics of coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) in different pet food brands in Brazil. Eighty-six pet food packages were screened for CoNS. All isolates were identified at species level by MALDI-TOF MS and species-specific PCR. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was per

The area under the curve (AUC)/minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) ratio was used as an indicator of the clinical efficacy of vancomycin. However, the target AUC/MIC has not been set for methicillin-resistant coagulase-negative staphylococci (MR-CNS), and the effectiveness of vancomycin in strains with high MIC is unknown. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the relationship between the vancomycin MIC and therapeutic efficacy in patients with MR-CNS bacteremia. The primary outcome was the difference in treatment failure rate when the MR-CNS vancomycin MIC was 1 or 2 µg/mL. The treatment fail

Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) represent one of the major causes of health care- and medical device-associated infections. Emerging antimicrobial resistance has complicated the treatment of systemic infections caused by CoNS. Here, we describe the prevalence of antimicrobial resistance in clinical CoNS strains from a tertiary care hospital over a 4-year period, and we observed a significant increase in resistance to daptomycin. Notably, Staphylococcus capitis accounted for the majority of these daptomycin-resistant (DAP-R) CoNS. To further investigate the mechanisms of daptomycin resi

Mastitis affects the health and welfare of dairy cows worldwide. Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) are known to form biofilms and are increasingly recognized as a cause of persistent bovine intramammary infections. A total of 90 CNS isolated from cows with clinical and subclinical mastitis in Argentina from 2008 to 2014 were identified by PCR-RFLP using the gap gene. Standard microtiter plate assays were used to assess CNS biofilm formation, and Staphylococcus haemolyticus species formed the strongest biofilms. The presence of biofilm-associated genes icaA, bap and aap was detected in a f

The use of antibiotics in animal production has been associated with the development and spread of antibiotic-resistant organisms including commensals. Coagulase-negative Staphylococcus (CoNS) species, which were until recently considered non-pathogenic, have been associated with opportunistic infections and high resistance to several antibiotics. This study sought to determine the prevalence, identity, and phenotypic resistance of coagulase-negative Staphylococcus spp. isolated from some selected poultry farms and farm workers in the Ashanti, Brong Ahafo, and Greater Accra regions of Ghana. Among 10 coagulase-negative staphylococci, telavancin, quinupristin/dalfopristin, and tigecycline were the most potent antimicrobials. Telavancin exhibited bactericidal effect to 9 strains out of 10 tested at 4× MIC after 24 h of exposure similar to those of vancomycin and daptomycin. By contrast, linezolid was mainly bacteriostatic and teicoplanin was bactericidal to 7 strains tested at 4× MIC after 24 h.

In our hospital, mupirocin has increasingly been used for peri-operative decolonization of Staphylococcus aureus. The target for mupirocin is isoleucyl tRNA synthetase (ileS). High-level resistance to mupirocin is conferred by acquisition of plasmids expressing a distinct ileS gene (ileS2). Here we evaluated the longitudinal trends in high-level mupirocin resistance in coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) and linked this to the presence of ileS2 genes and mupirocin use. We assessed mupirocin resistance in CoNS bloodstream isolates from 2006 to 2011 tested by Phoenix automated testing (PAT).

INTRODUCTION: Coagulase Negative Staphylococci (CNS) have become one of the most common nosocomial pathogens and it has a high mortality rate due to the increased of seriously ill patients survival, long states immunosuppression and presence of foreign bodies, such as catheters, prostheses, pacemakers, etc. In addition, there is a significant increase in resistance to antimicrobial drugs, especially beta-lactams, and the increase in the MIC for vancomycin leads to a loss of clinical efficacy. This necessitates the search for new therapeutic alternatives, such as daptomycin. The aim of this pap

During recent years the prevalence of coagulase-negative staphylococci in milk samples from Dutch dairy cows has increased. In 1999 16.2% of the bacteria isolated from milk collected from cows with subclinical mastitis were coagulase-negative staphylococci. In 2004 this proportion was 42.2%. The proportion of coagulase-negative staphylococci of the bacteria isolated from milk samples from cows with clinical mastitis was 7.3% in 1999 and 14.1% in 2004. In this study, the susceptibility of 108 coagulase-negative staphylococci to oxacillin, cefquinome, streptomycin, neomycin, penicillin, and the

Previously considered solely as the laboratory contaminants and normal flora of skin in man, coagulase negative Staphylococci are now a major cause of nosocomial and opportunistic infections. This study was conducted at IGIMS, Patna to find out the coagulase negative Staphylococcus isolates from urine and their antimicrobial resistance. In a period of ten months, the relative frequency of main coagulase negative Staphylococci were as follows--Staphylococcus epidermidis-45.90%, Staphylococcus saprophyticus 34% and Staphylococcus haemolyticus-8.50%. others were 11.60%. most of the Staphylococcus

Radial immunodiffusion was used to determine immunoglobulin (Ig)-G concentrations in 16 mammary secretions from uninfected udder halves and in 10-14 secretions from halves subclinically infected with coagulase-negative staphylococci in goats throughout lactation. IgG concentrations in samples from uninfected halves decreased rapidly during the first week after parturition (P < 0.001 ), henceforth falling slowly up to 30 d post-partum (P < 0.001). From 30 d post-partum to 180 d of lactation, IgG concentration showed a continuous decline to the end of the experiment but these changes were not st

20-25% of strains isolated in our hospital in 1991 from clinical specimens and identified as S. aureus were coagulase-negative. These strains were characterized in respect of biochemical properties and resistance to antibacterial drugs. It was shown that the investigated group of strains displayed high drug resistance and particularly high percent of strains were resistant to methicillin (60%). 100% strains were resistant to penicillin and tetracyclines and most of them were resistant to aminocyclitol antibiotics. Coagulase-negative strains, in comparison with coagulase-positive, less frequent

Background Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) have emerged as significant pathogens in nosocomial infections, particularly in bloodstream infections and individuals linked to embedded therapeutic devices. CoNS predominantly affects immunocompromised or debilitated patients. Additionally, individuals with medical indwelling devices, such as a catheter for the urinary tract, valves for the cardiovascular system, pacemakers, and prosthetic joints, should receive medical attention. As a result of the organism's evolving resistance to multiple antibiotics, managing CoNS infections is becoming
