The species of Cryptosporidium (Apicomplexa: Cryptosporidiidae) infecting mammals.

Oocysts of Cryptosporidium muris (Apicomplexa: Cryptosporidiidae) were obtained from the feces of naturally infected calves. Oocysts were fully sporulated in fresh feces, measured 7.4 X 5.6 (6.6 - 7.9 X 5.3 - 6.5) micron, and possessed a longitudinal suture along one pole of the oocyst wall. Morphologic and biologic evidence obtained from this study demonstrated that C. muris is a species distinct from Cryptosporidium parvum, which has smaller oocysts.

Experimental cryptosporidiosis in germfree lambs.

Contaminating bacteria were removed from an isolate of calf Cryptosporidium by 3 sequential passages of the parasite in gnotobiotic lambs, together with antibiotic treatment of the lambs. This preparation, which contained no detectable bacteria or viruses, was given by mouth to 8 2-day-old gnotobiotic lambs, 3 of which were dosed at the same time with bacterial flora from a healthy calf. Lambs were killed at intervals from 12 to 288 h post-inoculation and the sequential development of the parasite, of enteric lesions, and of clinical illness was observed. Lesions were characterized by severe v

Human cryptosporidiosis in the acquired immune deficiency syndrome.

We studied two cases of cryptosporidiosis in patients with acquired immune deficiency syndrome. In one patient, the gallbladder was affected in addition to gastric and intestinal involvements. This is the first human case in which Cryptosporidium has been found in the biliary tract. It is important that pathologists become aware of this protozoan infection since the number of patients with it is likely to increase in the near future.

[Cryptosporidiosis. Characterization of a new infection with special regard to water as the source of infection].

Within the past few years, microorganisms of the Genus Cryptosporidium have been recognized as an important pathogen to humans. A possible mode of transmission is represented by the presence of Cryptosporidium-oocysts in water. Meanwhile several outbreaks of diarrheal illness caused by the contamination of drinking water by Cryptosporidium have been documented; an infection can be life-threatening for immunosuppressed patients. This article reviews the organism causing Cryptosporidiosis, his ecology, the clinical feature, the sources of infection and the epidemiology. The remarkable resistance

Abomasal cryptosporidiosis in cattle.

A 6-week-old calf and nine feedlot steers shed oocysts similar to Cryptosporidium muris-like oocysts. There were massive populations of this Cryptosporidium in the peptic glands of most of these animals. The oocysts were larger and more oval than the frequently reported type which is generated in the intestines of many animal species and thought to be similar to Cryptosporidium parvum. The pattern of shedding of this newly discovered Cryptosporidium in the steers was continuous over a period of months whereas the C. parvum-like oocysts cease to be shed 1 to several weeks after onset. The natur

Recognition of whole Cryptosporidium oocysts in feces by negative staining and electron microscopy.

Crytosporidium oocysts in feces were recognizable in the electron microscope when prepared by the negative staining technique used by virologists. Their size, shape, and surface markings were sufficiently characteristic for cryptosporidiosis to be diagnosed by this method if more suitable methods are not available.

[The effect of a single disinfection of a farm on cryptosporidiosis infection in calves].

The disinfection of a farm with Dikonit (active substance: sodium dichlorocyanuran) exerted no significant influence on the course of the spreading of cryptosporidiosis infections in newborn calves. The oocysts of Cryptosporidium sp., isolated from the faeces of a spontaneously infected calf and left in a 2.5% disinfecting solution of Dikonit under laboratory conditions for four hours, did not lose their viability. Laboratory mice experimentally infected with these "disinfected" oocysts, began to produce oocysts of Cryptosporidium sp. the sixth day from infection. The findings of different dev

Nanoscale imaging of the conoid and functional dissection of its dynamics in Apicomplexa.

Members of the Apicomplexa phylum are unified by an apical complex tailored for motility and host cell invasion. It includes regulated secretory organelles and a conoid attached to the apical polar ring (APR) from which subpellicular microtubules emerge. In coccidia, the conoid is composed of a cone of spiraling tubulin fibers, two preconoidal rings, and two intraconoidal microtubules. The conoid extrudes through the APR in motile parasites. Recent advances in proteomics, cryo-electron tomography, super-resolution, and expansion microscopy provide a more comprehensive view of the spatial and t

Parasites in grizzly bears from the central Canadian Arctic.

Standardized flotation techniques were used to survey 56 grizzly bear (Ursus arctos) fecal samples for parasites. The samples were collected during the spring and autumn of 1995 and 1996 in the central Arctic of the Northwest Territories (Canada). Parasites of the genera Nematodirus, gastrointestinal coccidia, and an unidentified first stage protostrongylid larva are reported for the first time from grizzly bear feces in North America. Parasites of the genera Diphyllobothrium and Baylisascaris also were collected. Prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites were significantly different between th

Health Screening of American Beavers (Castor canadensis) in Utah, USA.

American beavers (Castor canadensis), trapped between 2017 and 2020 for the purpose of translocation, underwent hematologic, serologic, and fecal examinations. Eight of 73 beavers were seropositive for Leptospira spp. and 1/49 seropositive for Toxoplasma gondii. Two of 40 beavers tested positive for Giardia spp., and 22/44 beavers had strongyle-type ova in the feces; one was positive for coccidia. Hematologic variables were largely within published reference ranges for captive beavers. Within the specific ecosystems sampled, the disease prevalence in beavers appeared low; however, prophylactic

Attaching and effacing Escherichia coli infection as a cause of diarrhea in young calves.

A form of enteric Escherichia coli infection was identified in 60 calves from 59 farming operations. The E coli responsible for these infections principally colonized the colon, inducing a distinctive lesion described as attaching and effacing. Hemorrhagic enterocolitis or blood in the feces was observed on 40% of the farms. Of affected calves, 86.6% were dairy calves (average age, 11.8 days). Forty-four calves were infected concurrently with other enteropathogens (cryptosporidia, rotavirus, coronavirus, enterotoxigenic E coli, bovine viral diarrhea virus, coccidia). Verotoxin-producing E coli

Gastrointestinal parasitism of Iowa coyotes in relation to age.

Taenia sp., Physaloptera sp., Ancylostoma caninum, Toxascaris leonina, and/or Trichuris vulpis were recovered from gastrointestinal tracts of 141 and 144 (97.9%) coyotes ranging from 1/2 to 8 1/2 years of age. Ancylostoma caninum exhibited a significant decline in both prevalence and mean number per coyote with increasing age of the host. Taenia sp. appeared with consistently high prevalence in all age classes. Physaloptera sp. and T. leonina showed general reductions in prevalence in all age classes. Physaloptera sp. and T. leonina showed general reductions in prevalence and mean nubmer with

Immunohistopathological response against anisakid nematode larvae and a coccidian in Micromesistius poutassou from NE Atlantic waters.

A survey on Anisakis simplex (sensu stricto (s.s.)) from blue whiting, Micromesistius poutassou, in the north-eastern Atlantic Ocean revealed the occurrence of high infection levels of third larval stages in visceral organs and flesh. Larvae were genetically identified with a multilocus approach as A. simplex (s.s.). Histochemical, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural observations were conducted on 30 M. poutassou specimens. Gonads, pyloric caeca and flesh harboured encapsulated larvae of A. simplex (s.s.) but no intense host reaction was encountered around the parasite in the above organs.

EXTENSION OF THE KNOWN HOST RANGE OF INTRANUCLEAR COCCIDIOSIS: INFECTION IN THREE CAPTIVE RED-FOOTED TORTOISES ( CHELONOIDIS CARBONARIA).

The intranuclear coccidian parasite of Testudines (TINC) is an emerging pathogen of tortoises. Three captive red-footed tortoises ( Chelonoidis carbonaria) from an isolated collection presented with multiple acute, nonspecific clinical signs. One tortoise died and was diagnosed with intranuclear coccidiosis on histopathology with confirmation by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). In addition to tissues where TINC has been previously described, coccidia were identified in the pineal gland, choroid plexus, and testicular Sertoli cells. The two remaining tortoises survived after treat
