INTRODUCTION: Tinnitus is a frequent symptom in cochlear implant patients, often reported as persistent and disabling in implant candidates. Tinnitus is rarely considered in the preoperative evaluation of patients who are eligible for cochlear implantation. Many studies have shown that a cochlear implant leads to a significant change in the perception of tinnitus.
OBJECTIVE: To identify evidence in the scientific literature indicating that cochlear implant in eligible patients with tinnitus can improve tinnitus perception.
METHODS: One hundred forty articles were found from nine databases, a

In this case report, a 78-year-old woman, who had a cochlear implant, was treated with electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). The patient suffered from major depressive disorder with psychotic features. Normally, ECT is not recommended for patients with cochlear implants because of a potential risk of damage to the patient or the implant, but in this case ECT was performed due to life-threatening conditions. The treatment was effective and well-tolerated, and there was no damage to the cochlear implant.

OBJECTIVES: To analyze vestibular function Q2 (VF) after cochlear implantation (CI) in children.
METHODS: Retrospective cohort study at a tertiary pediatric referral center. 43 children that had vestibular testing (VT) after unilateral cochlear implantation, from 2001 to 2010, were included. CT scan of the temporal bone was done systematically before surgery. VT included three tests: head-impulse test, caloric tests, vestibular evoked myogenic potentials. VF was graded in: normal (type 1), partial dysfunction (type 2), severe dysfunction and areflexia (type 3). In 12 cases, VT was done before

Paget's disease of the temporal bone can cause hearing loss that eventually develops into profound deafness. However, the treatment options for hearing loss associated with Paget's disease are limited. Thus far, only 3 cases of cochlear implantation in patients with Paget's disease have been reported. In this study, we describe a 62-year-old woman who underwent cochlear implantation for progressive bilateral sensorineural hearing loss. The patient gained useful open-set speech perception over a 5-year postoperative period. Cochlear implantation can be beneficial in patients with profound heari

PURPOSE: The advent of cochlear implantation has been followed by an explosion in surgical and technological advances with subsequent alterations in the treatment of sensorineural hearing loss management. Many individuals with rare genetic abnormalities who once may have not been considered candidates for cochlear implantation are now benefiting from cochlear implantation. One of these unusual syndromes is the 13q deletion syndrome. The clinical features of 13q deletion syndrome, a rare chromosomal abnormality, were originally described in the early 1960s, though the literature currently lacks

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a connective tissue disorder characterized by a deficit in the synthesis of type I collagen. Hearing loss affects 42-58% of OI patients and progresses to deafness in 35-60% of these patients. For OI patients, cochlear implantation (CI) is the only promising treatment option. However, literature on CI in patients with OI is relatively rare. After CI, speech perception is generally good. However, among patients with severe demineralization of the cochlea, most patients are reported to have complications of facial nerve stimulation (FNS), preventing some patients f

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Medulloblastoma is the most common pediatric malignant tumor of the central nervous system in children. Treatment includes surgical excision, external beam radiation, and multiagent chemotherapy. Otologic sequelae are common and may result from radiation and/or chemotherapy. Profound sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is a known complication of neuro-oncologic treatment and may render these patients eligible for cochlear implantation (CI). Issues of CI in this population, including diagnosis, treatment of preoperative middle ear disease, operative and postoperative course

BACKGROUND: Considered a rare disorder, superficial siderosis of the central nervous system (SSCN) has become more frequently diagnosed in recent years. As it is characterized by progressive sensorineural hearing loss, patients' needs may surpass the capability of hearing aid technology. Despite the retrocochlear nature of the disorder, patients have undergone cochlear implantation (CI) with varying success.
PURPOSE: To summarize the issues surrounding cochlear implant candidates with SSCN as well as highlight trends in performance postimplantation.
RESEARCH DESIGN: Retrospective case report
