Childhood fluoride exposure and cognition across the life course.

How are children's fluoride exposures associated with cognitive test performance in adolescence and midlife? Whereas most prior research has estimated effects of exposure to extremely high levels of fluoride, we consider exposure to levels of fluoride within the range typical in most places and of greatest relevance to policy debates about government water fluoridation. We use data from the nationally representative (United States) High School and Beyond cohort, characterize fluoride exposure from drinking water across adolescence, adjust for confounders, and observe cognitive test performance

Childhood Trauma, Cognition, and Eating Psychopathology: A Network Analysis.

Background/Objectives: Childhood trauma is associated with psychiatric sequelae beyond post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), including eating disorders (EDs) and cognitive dysfunction. While eating pathology is related to cognition irrespective of childhood trauma exposure, such experiences may influence the way in which these symptoms develop. One method that has garnered increased interest in studying the interrelationships between symptoms and pinpointing core features of psychopathology is network analysis. Methods: Using data from the Nathan Kline Institute Rockland Sample, the present s

The daily relations of co-rumination and perseverative cognition.

Emotion regulation plays a crucial role in responding to daily stressors. While intrapersonal emotion regulation has received significant attention, the role of interpersonal emotion regulation remains understudied. This study aimed to explore the associations between intrapersonal perseverative cognition (i.e., rumination and worry) and interpersonal perseverative cognition (i.e., co-rumination), in the context of daily negative events. A daily diary study was conducted with a sample of university students (N = 178). The study comprised a baseline survey assessing trait-level variables, follo

Retinal vasculometry associations with cognition status in UK Biobank.

INTRODUCTION: Retinal vasculometry (RV) provides a neurovascular biomarker which may relate to cognitive status. However, the presence and form of association remains unclear and unexamined at scale. METHODS: Artificial intelligence-enabled RV measures from 66,350 UK Biobank study participants were related to combined cognition scores. Differences in RV were examined per standard deviation (SD) increase in cognitive score, using multilevel linear regression, adjusted for age, sex, measurement center, ethnicity, and within-person RV clustering. RESULTS: One hundred ten thousand two hundred ei

Monitoring cognition in people with epilepsy and intellectual disability.

Monitoring cognition is essential in patients with epilepsy and intellectual disability (ID) to assess the course of the disease and its treatment. Patients with developmental or non-developmental ID are particularly vulnerable, as they more frequently experience severe medical conditions (such as seizures) and cognitive or psychiatric comorbidities than individuals with average intelligence. Given the difficulties in assessing patients with ID, this study aims to contextualise the current field of cognitive screening for patients with epilepsy and moderate or severe ID. To this purpose, this

Drawing as a means to characterize memory and cognition.

As psychological research embraces more naturalistic questions and large-scale analytic methods, drawing has emerged as an exciting tool for studying cognition. Drawing provides rich information about how we view the world, ranging from largely veridical perceptual representations to abstracted meta-cognitive representations. Drawing also requires the integration of multiple processes (e.g., vision, memory, motor learning), and experience with drawing can have an impact on such processes. As a result, drawing presents several interesting cognitive questions, while also providing a way to gain

Beyond cognition: psychopathological sequelae of neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy.

BACKGROUND: Since the introduction of therapeutic hypothermia (TH) for neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), mortality and severe morbidity have been reduced, but follow-up studies have shown a high incidence of neuropsychological impairments. By contrast, the possibility of psychopathological vulnerability in children with HIE has not been clearly addressed. Our study aims to investigate the presence of psychopathological symptoms by comparing in the prepuberal period a sample of children with a history of neonatal HIE to a control group. METHODS: This is an observational cohort st

Cytomegalovirus: An undervalued biological parameter of cognition in schizophrenia.

There is growing evidence that the brain is not an immune-privileged area, with central nervous system (CNS) cells being susceptible to inflammation as the brain responds to infection. Among the myriad of pathogens capable of infiltrating the neural environment, cytomegalovirus (CMV) has been one of the most extensively studied. Notably, CMV has been implicated in a range of neuropsychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia (SCZ). The objective of this review is to provide a comprehensive analysis of the impact of CMV on cognitive function in SCZ. Our review covers studies that explore the i

Subcortical volumes and cognition in CADASIL - A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral Autosomal Dominant Arteriopathy with Subcortical Infarcts and Leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL) represents the most common heritable cause of vascular dementia. Subcortical volumes might be proxies of brain reserve capacity and reflective of cognitive function. We explored the impact of subcortical volumes on cognition in CADASIL patients. METHODS: We included 90 patients with pathogenic NOTCH3 variants from the Taiwan Associated Genetic and Nongenetic Small Vessel Disease cohort. They underwent MRI sessions at baseline. The volumes of the putamen, caudate, pallidum, thalamus

The neural basis of naturalistic semantic and social cognition.

Decoding social environments and engaging meaningfully with other people are critical aspects of human cognition. Multiple cognitive systems, including social and semantic cognition, work alongside each other to support these processes. This study investigated shared processing between social and semantic systems using neuroimaging data collected during movie-viewing, which captures the multimodal environment in which social knowledge is exchanged. Semantic and social content from movie events (event-level) and movie transcripts (word-level) were used in parametric modulation analyses to test

Amelioration of cognition by hesperidin-conjugated cobalt oxide nanoparticles.

Diabetes mellitus is one of the metabolic syndromes that is associated with cognitive deficit, dementia, and Alzheimer's disease (AD) like pathology due to impaired insulin-signalling in the brain, oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction. Nanotechnology is one of the most promising techniques for targeting the brain. However, the toxicity of metal nanoparticles is one of the biggest challenges to be studied. In this study, cobalt oxide nanoparticles are conjugated to a bioflavonoid, hesperidin, a natural antioxidant. The study is designed to assess the efficacy and safety of the cobalt

Sleep functional connectivity, hyperexcitability, and cognition in Alzheimer's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Sleep disturbances are common in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and may reflect pathologic changes in brain networks. To date, no studies have examined changes in sleep functional connectivity (FC) in AD or their relationship with network hyperexcitability and cognition. METHODS: We assessed electroencephalogram (EEG) sleep FC in 33 healthy controls, 36 individuals with AD without epilepsy, and 14 individuals with AD and epilepsy. RESULTS: AD participants showed increased gamma connectivity in stage 2 sleep (N2), which was associated with longitudinal cognitive decline. Network hyper

Effects of biopsychosocial approach on cognition among Parkinson's population.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive decline is a debilitating symptom in Parkinson's disease (PD). Cognitive impairment in PD has a significant impact on many aspects of an individual's life, social interactions, and overall quality of life (QOL). It is also associated with a faster disease progression and an increased risk of developing dementia. A biopsychosocial approach is likely to address not only the underlying biological mechanisms of cognitive impairment in PD but also the psychological and social factors that can contribute to cognitive decline and influence treatment outcomes. METHOD: This exper

Moving on with (social) cognition in idiopathic cervical dystonia.

OBJECTIVE: Cervical dystonia (CD) is a movement disorder characterized by involuntary muscle contractions causing sustained twisting movements and abnormal postures of the neck and head. Assumed affected neuronal regions are the cortico-striatal-thalamo-cortical circuits, which are also involved in cognitive functioning. Indeed, impairments in different cognitive domains have been found in CD patients. However, to date studies have only investigated a limited range of cognitive functions within the same sample. In particular, social cognition (SC) is often missing from study designs. Hence, we

Education is power: preserving cognition in the UK biobank.

INTRODUCTION: Dementia is a debilitating syndrome characterized by the gradual loss of memory and cognitive function. Although there are currently limited, largely symptomatic treatments for the diseases that can lead to dementia, its onset may be prevented by identifying and modifying relevant life style risk factors. Commonly described modifiable risk factors include diet, physical inactivity, and educational attainment. Importantly, however, to maximize the utility of our understanding of these risk factors, tangible and meaningful changes to policy must also be addressed. OBJECTIVES: Here
