Genomic Insights into Cold Adaptation and Demographic History of Amur-Heilong River Basin Populations.

Human adaptation to extreme cold has been studied predominantly in Arctic populations, leaving the genetic basis of cold resilience in non-Arctic high-latitude regions insufficiently understood. The Amur-Heilong River Basin (AR) in Northeast Asia represents one of the coldest inhabited regions in East Asia, yet its long-term resident populations remain underexplored at the genomic level. Here, we compiled high-coverage whole-genome sequences for 78 individuals representing three indigenous AR populations (Daur, Evenki, and Oroqen) to investigate their demographic history and genetic adaptation

Chronic Humidity and Nasal Mucosal Dysfunction in Tropical Climates: Implications for Sinonasal Health in Sub-Saharan Africa and the Developing World - A Systematic Review.

The nasal mucosa is the primary defense mechanism of the upper respiratory tract. Its functionality relies heavily on the intricate balance of mucociliary clearance (MCC), mucosal hydration, epithelial tight junction integrity, and local immunological responses. While the detrimental physiological effects of low humidity and cold temperatures on nasal function are extensively documented in the literature, the physiological and pathological impacts of chronic exposure to high relative humidity (RH) and high temperatures-the defining characteristics of tropical and equatorial climates-remain sig

Spatial Patterns of Dengue Incidence in Nepal During Record Outbreaks in 2022 and 2023: Implications for Public Health Interventions.

Dengue, which was first reported as a travel case in Nepal in 2004, was initially confined to the lower plains but has spread to higher elevations. Large outbreaks in 2022 and 2023 (54,784 and 51,243 cases, respectively), reached every district (n = 77). We calculated the district-wise incidence for 2022 and 2023 by digitizing case data from Nepal's Ministry of Health and Population and 2021 census data from the National Statistics Office. The incidence and peak incidence months for each year were mapped, and spatial clusters (hotspots and cold spots) and outliers of incidence rates were ident

Evolutionary constraint on a core winter proteome across independently cold-adapted PACMAD grasses.

Grasses in the Panicoideae, Aristidoideae, Chloridoideae, Micrairoideae, Arundinoideae, and Danthonioideae (PACMAD) clade independently colonized cold environments from warm-climate ancestors, but whether their molecular responses to freezing reflect shared evolutionary solutions or lineage-specific innovations remains poorly understood at the protein level. We used comparative proteomics to test whether protein-level cold responses show stronger cross-species conservation than previously observed at the transcript level. We quantified seasonal rhizome proteomes (winter vs summer) from five PA

Transcriptome and metabolome analysis of Cycas bifida response to low-temperature stress.

BACKGROUND: Cycas bifida is an endemic species distributed in limited areas of Yunnan and Guangxi, with a notably small population size. Under the context of global climate warming, this species may require introduction to colder habitats. Previous studies have confirmed its weak cold tolerance. To thoroughly investigate the molecular and metabolic mechanisms underlying its response to low temperature, this study employed low-temperature stress treatments combined with transcriptome sequencing and metabolomics technologies for systematic comparative analysis. RESULTS: Through multi-omics anal

Burden trends and future predictions for hypertensive heart disease attributable to non-optimal temperatures in the older adults amidst climate change, 1990-2021.

BACKGROUND: Hypertensive heart disease (HHD) is a significant form of end-organ damage caused by hypertension, with profound impacts on global health and quality of life. Temperature anomalies driven by climate change, particularly extremes of heat and cold, are increasingly recognized as major contributors to the cardiovascular disease burden, notably impacting HHD. However, the specific spatiotemporal trends and gender-based differences in the burden of non-optimal temperatures on older adults HHD patients remain insufficiently explored. This study aims to evaluate the regional, gender-speci

The Impact of Temperature on the Leaves of Ceratonia siliqua L.: Anatomical Aspect, Secondary Metabolite Analysis, and Antimicrobial Activity of the Extracts.

Ceratonia siliqua L. (Fabaceae) is an evergreen sclerophyllous species that successfully overcomes the challenges of the Mediterranean climate. Commonly, biosynthesis of secondary metabolites is a major reaction of the plants thriving in the Mediterranean formations against temperature stress. Due to concerns about the climate crisis, we studied the impact of 6-day low (5 °C) and high (40 °C) temperature stress on young carob seedlings. In stressed plants, mainly the heat-treated, the leaves appear xeromorphic. Parameters of the physiology of the plants such as chlorophyll-a and -b, total phen

Out in the cold: Testing a multi-agency approach to working in extreme cold emergency situations.

Climate change has amplified the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, including snow, floods, and heatwaves, which pose significant challenges to emergency service provision. While existing literature on the impacts of extreme weather on emergency services is limited, the United Kingdom (UK), with its varying weather patterns, faces considerable risks to infrastructure, health, and service delivery during these events, which are no longer extremely rare occurrences. This study investigates the effectiveness of multiagency, immersive simulation training in preparing emergency resp

Integrated analysis uncovers the role of circadian rhythm genes in cold adaptation of Kandelia obovata using the multi-omics data.

Kandelia obovata and Kandelia candel, two sister mangrove species within the genus Kandelia (Rhizophoraceae), exhibit pronounced differences in cold tolerance. However, the genetic basis underlying this adaptive divergence remains unclear. In this study, we assembled a high-quality, chromosome-level genome of K. candel (~225 Mb) to facilitate comparative genomic analysis with K. obovata. Functional enrichment revealed that expanded gene families in K. candel and contracted families in K. obovata were both significantly associated with transcription factor (TF) activity, highlighting TFs as pot

Temperature-mortality associations and attributable burden in Vojvodina, Serbia, 2000-2020.

Ambient temperature is a well-established determinant of mortality, yet evidence from temperate continental regions of Central and Southeastern Europe remains limited. Public health attention has largely concentrated on extreme temperature events, notwithstanding growing evidence that non-extreme temperatures may account for a substantial share of temperature-related deaths. We examined the association between daily mean temperature and all-cause mortality in the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, Serbia, over 2000-2020. Distributed lag non-linear models were used to capture non-linear and dela

Transient receptor potential melastatin 8 gene polymorphism is associated with cold-induced airway hyperresponsiveness in bronchial asthma.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Cold-induced airway hyperresponsiveness (CAH) is common in bronchial asthma (BA) patients and represents a problem for those living in cold climate. Transient receptor potential melastatin 8 (TRPM8) channel is the main cold temperature sensor in humans that could mediate cold response in asthmatics with CAH. No associations between TRPM8 gene polymorphisms and CAH have been reported. METHODS: The present study involved 123 BA patients. CAH was assessed by 3-min isocapnic (5% CO2 ) cold air (-20°C) hyperventilation challenge. The c.750G > C (rs11562975), c.1256G > A (

The Effects of Acute Temperature Changes on Transcriptomic Responses in the Liver of Leopard Coral Groupers (Plectropomus leopardus).

The leopard coral grouper (Plectropomus leopardus) is a commercially significant tropical marine species. With the ongoing effects of global climate change, increasing attention has been focused on leopard coral grouper's susceptibility to extreme cold weather. This study investigates the effects of acute cold exposure and temperature recovery on the liver of P. leopardus. Histological observations and enzyme activity assays revealed that temperature fluctuations caused significant disruptions to normal liver physiology, including lipid accumulation and alterations in antioxidant levels. The potential effects of temperature on outpatient visits: a case study in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Climate change is a crucial cause of health issues, as reported in many studies. Temperature is one of the important factors related to extreme weather. Chiang Mai, the center of the north of Thailand, is also affected by temperature changes that have led to many outpatient visits. Better information will help the health service to be well-prepared. This research applied typical meteorological data and solar radiation into the distributed lag nonlinear model and a quasi-Poisson regression model. The "hot effect" and "cold effect" on outpatient visits caused by respiratory diseases, dermatophyt

Stochastic cloud fluctuations drive Arctic winter radiative bistability.

In Arctic winter, the boundary layer occupies two preferred radiative states, a cold, clear state and a heat-trapping, cloudy state, that strongly regulate surface energy loss over sea ice. Yet, reanalyses and climate models are often biased toward a single intermediate state. Using a stochastic differential equation framework applied to 27 years of high-resolution observations, we show that the observed bistability is not sustained by multiple deterministic equilibria: The mean restoring tendency is effectively single-well, while background meteorology alone cannot explain rapid transitions.

Polar poisons: did Botulism doom the Franklin expedition?

In 1845 the Franklin expedition left London with 2 ships and 134 men on board in an attempt to find the route through the Northwest Passage. The ships were built with state-of-the-art technology for their day, but provisioned with supplies from the lowest bidder. After taking on fresh provisions in the Whalefish Islands, off the coast of Greenland, the entire crew was never heard from again. Graves found on remote Beechey Island indicate that three able-bodied seamen died during the first winter. A note written on a ship's log, later found in a cairn, indicate that the expedition's leader, Sir
