Computed tomography (CT) colonography is the established successor to the barium enema for the detection of colonic neoplasia due to superior performance and patient experience. Consequently, CT colonography is widely disseminated across Western populations and increasingly provided by both subspecialist and general radiologists alike. As a result, CT colonography is now part of the core training curriculum for radiology in the UK. However, study data shows wide performance gaps between centres and between individuals of differing experience, which is perhaps unsurprising given the complexity

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy and tolerance of an additional phosphate enema prior to non-laxative CT colonography (CTC).
METHODS: 71 patients (mean age 80 years, 28 male, 43 female) underwent non-laxative CTC following 4 oral doses of diluted 2% w/w barium sulphate. Patients were invited to self-administer a phosphate enema 2 h before CTC. An experienced observer graded the volume of retained stool (1 (nil) to 4 (>75% bowel circumference coated)), retained fluid ((1 (nil) to 4 (>50% circumference obscured)), retained stool tagging quality (1 (untagged)

PURPOSE: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a leading cause of cancer-related death, and timely and accurate recognition of endoluminal pathology is crucial. While CT colonography (CTC) is validated for luminal assessment with a sensitivity concordant to endoscopy, most radiology referrals to the tumor board are based on unprepared CT abdominal studies without bowel preparation or fecal tagging. The diagnostic yield of these routine unprepared CT scans and the influence of radiologist subspecialty, remain uncertain. This study evaluated the positive predictive value of CTC and unprepared CT for suspec

INTRODUCTION: CT angiography has gained widespread acceptance for preoperative evaluation of blood supply in patients with colorectal cancer. However, there have been few reports that pertain to the splenic flexure, for which surgery is technically difficult. We used preoperative CT angiography and CT colonography to evaluate blood supply to the splenic flexure.
METHODS: We defined the splenic flexure as the junction of the distal third of the transverse colon and the proximal third of the descending colon. We reviewed 191 cases and considered the descending colon as divided into the proximal

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the techniques and clinical applications of multislice helical computed tomography (CT) colonography in colonic lesions.
METHODS: Fifty-nine patients with malignant lesions of colon underwent volume scanning using multislice helical CT. Four types of reconstruction including CT virtual colonoscopy (CTVC), shaded surface display (SSD), Raysum, and multiple planar reconstruction (MPR) were used for image post-processing. The results were compared with those of colonoscopy and pathology.
RESULTS: Multislice helical CT colonography detected 54 colorectal carcinomas, 4 a

An ascending lumbar vein passing through a foramen on the right pedicle of the third lumbar vertebra unilaterally, which was diagnosed incidentally during virtual CT colonoscopy of a patient with a rectal tumor, is described. Recognition of this anatomic variation is important to avoid diagnostic misinterpretations and transpedicular interventions such as percutaneous vertebroplasty or surgical instrumentation that may result in excessive hemorrhage and inadvertent leak of cement when it is present.

Twenty years after its introduction, computed tomographic colonography (CTC) has reached its maturity, and it can reasonably be considered the best radiological diagnostic test for imaging colorectal cancer (CRC) and polyps. This examination technique is less invasive than colonoscopy (CS), easy to perform, and standardized. Reduced bowel preparation and colonic distention using carbon dioxide favor patient compliance. Widespread implementation of a new image reconstruction algorithm has minimized radiation exposure, and the use of dedicated software with enhanced views has enabled easier imag

OBJECTIVE: We wanted to assess the diagnostic value of computed tomographic colonography (CTC) in recognizing bowel endometriosis in comparison with serum Ca125, transvaginal sonography (TVS), and presence of intestinal symptoms.
METHODS: We included in this study 92 women undergoing surgery for symptomatic DIE. Preoperative evaluation included clinical history, Ca125 serum value, and TVS. CTC was performed in 37/92 patients (40.2%), and the results were compared to the other preoperative tools and to surgical exploration, considered the clinical reference standard.
RESULTS: Surgery confirme

Localized giant pseudopolyposis of the colon (pseudopolyp larger than 1.5 cm in size) is a rare complication of inflammatory bowel disease. There is one report of an occult carcinoma within such a lesion, and no reports of sole dysplasia. A case of a 42-year-old man with longstanding Crohn's colitis who underwent a colonoscopy revealing a large, multilobulated mass at the splenic flexure that was not amenable to endoscopic removal, is described. Multiple biopsies showed no dysplasia and histology was consistent with an inflammatory pseudopolyp. Computed tomographic colonography demonstrated a

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a significant global health burden, and screening can greatly reduce CRC incidence and mortality. Previous studies investigated the economic effects of CRC screening. We performed a systematic review to provide the cost-effectiveness of CRC screening strategies across countries with different income levels.
METHODS: We searched relevant scientific databases (PubMed, Embase, Ovid, Web of Science, Scopus) from January 1, 2010, to December 31, 2023. We selected English-language studies related to model-based economic evaluations of CRC screening str

BACKGROUND: Incidental adrenal masses (IAMs) occur in approximately 4% of patients undergoing abdominal CT scans for any indication. Hormonal evaluation is recommended for all IAMs. The purpose of this study was to identify the rate of IAMs in a screening population and to determine the adequacy of endocrine evaluation of newly identified IAMs based on established guidelines.
METHODS: This was a retrospective analysis of 6913 patients undergoing a non-contrast screening CT colonography at a single academic medical center between June 2004 and July 2012.
RESULTS: The prevalence of IAMs in thi

PURPOSE: Compare colonic distension using CT colonography (CTC) and CT with water enema (CTWE) in the same patients.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: Twenty-seven patients who underwent both CTC and CTWE, considering separately supine (CTC-S) and prone (CTC-P) acquisition of CTC were included. The colon was divided into six segments, performing both a qualitative and quantitative analysis.
RESULTS: Adequate distension of sigmoid colon was more frequently achieved with CTC-P and CTWE compared to CTC-S (P<.05). CTC-P and CTWE showed better distension of the left colon compared to CTC-S (P<.01 and P=.03
