Factors influencing receipt of specialty neurologic care for patients with Huntington's disease in Colorado.

BACKGROUND: Despite recognized importance of specialized neurological care for patients with Huntington's disease (HD), little is known about the number or characteristics of patients who receive this type of care. OBJECTIVES: To identify differences between patients receiving care from a movement disorders specialist (MDS) compared to a general neurologist using data from the Colorado All Payers Claims Database between 2019 and 2022. METHODS: Logistic regression models were used to compare characteristics of patients who had received care from a MDS compared to a general neurologist in a gi

Rural and Urban Disparities in Access to Endovascular Thrombectomy for Large Vessel Occlusions in Colorado.

BACKGROUND: Rural-urban disparities in access to acute stroke care exist and have widened over time. We sought to quantify the rural-urban disparities that may exist in access to endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) for patients experiencing strokes with large vessel occlusions in Colorado. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study looking at all Colorado residents aged ≥18 years with large vessel occlusions undergoing EVT, between January 1, 2015, and November 30, 2022. Eleven sites performed EVTs in Colorado during the study period, and each site submitted data independently to the coordina

RNAi of Mannosidase-Ia in the Colorado potato beetle and changes in the midgut and peritrophic membrane.

BACKGROUND: In addition to its role in the digestive system, the peritrophic membrane (PM) provides a physical barrier protecting the intestine from abrasion and against pathogens. Because of its sensitivity to RNA interference (RNAi), the notorious pest insect, the Colorado potato beetle (CPB, Leptinotarsa decemlineata), has become a model insect for functional studies. Previously, RNAi-mediated silencing of Mannosidase-Ia (ManIa), a key enzyme in the transition from high-mannose glycan moieties to paucimannose N-glycans, was shown to disrupt the transition from larva to pupa and the metamorp

Production of hydrogen peroxide in an intra-meander hyporheic zone at East River, Colorado.

The traditionally held assumption that photo-dependent processes are the predominant source of H2O2 in natural waters has been recently questioned by an increrasing body of evidence showing the ubiquitiousness of H2O2 in dark water bodies and in groundwater. In this study, we conducted field measurement of H2O2 in an intra-meander hyporheic zone and in surface water at East River, CO. On-site detection using a sensitive chemiluminescence method suggests H2O2 concentrations in groundwater ranging from 6 nM (at the most reduced region) to ~ 80 nM (in a locally oxygen-rich area) along the intra-m

Information-Seeking Preferences of the Colorado Equine Industry for Distribution of Disease Outbreak Information.

The purpose of this study was to learn how perceptions of accuracy and availability of sources affect how members of the Colorado equine industry seek both everyday information and information during an equine disease outbreak. A survey was distributed by email and social media to members of Colorado-based equine organizations. A total of 256 survey responses were obtained from individuals representing a spectrum of ages and roles in the Colorado equine industry. Survey participants predominantly identified as female (95.3%) and their industry role as a horse owner (41%) or a competitive (25.8

Evaluation for Arboviral Infection Among Children Hospitalized in Colorado With Aseptic Meningitis and Encephalitis.

Among 39 children hospitalized in Colorado with aseptic meningitis or encephalitis, 16 (41%) had an etiology identified, including 2 (5%) with West Nile virus infection. Despite extensive testing, no other arboviral infections were identified. Arboviral infection should be considered in children with neuroinvasive disease during arboviral season with testing directed toward viruses endemic to the region and type of exposure.

A Comparison of Health Disparities among Transgender Adults in Colorado (USA) by Race and Income.

Transgender individuals face heightened risks for discrimination, harassment, and violence that impact their psychosocial well-being and physical health. However, few studies have thoroughly examined the general physical and mental health of transgender adults or within-group health differences by race/ethnicity and income. To that end, after controlling for health insurance status, age, and engagement in exercise, this study asks: (a) are transgender people of color more likely than White transgender individuals to experience poor health outcomes?, and (b) is lower annual household income amo

Additional observations and notes on the natural history of the prairie rattlesnake (Crotalus viridis) in Colorado.

On account of their unique anatomy, physiology, natural history, ecology, and behavior, rattlesnakes make ideal subjects for a variety of different scientific disciplines. The prairie rattlesnake (Crotalus viridis) in Colorado was selected for investigation of its relationship to colonies of black-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus) with regard to spatial ecology. A total of 31 snakes were anesthetized and had radiotransmitters surgically implanted. In addition, at the time of their capture, all snakes underwent the following: (1) they had bacterial culture taken from their mouths for p

Infants born at the threshold of viability in relation to neonatal mortality: Colorado, 1991 to 2003.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the contribution of infants born at the threshold of viability (defined as <750 g birth weight) and the role of regionalization of perinatal care on the neonatal mortality rate (NMR) in Colorado. STUDY DESIGN: We performed a retrospective cohort study, evaluating all live births in Colorado from 1991 to 2003, and comparing the periods 1991 to 1996 versus 1997 to 2003. RESULT: The overall unadjusted NMR of the two time periods was 4.3 and 4.4 per 1000 live births, respectively (P=0.42). The contribution of infants with birth weights<750 g to the overall NMR increased f

Injuries and illnesses of big game hunters in western Colorado: a 9-year analysis.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to characterize big game hunter visits to a rural hospital's emergency department (ED). Using data collected on fatalities, injuries, and illnesses over a 9-year period, trends were noted and comparisons made to ED visits of alpine skiers, swimmers, and bicyclists. Out-of-hospital hunter fatalities reported by the county coroner's office were also reviewed. Cautionary advice is offered for potential big game hunters and their health care providers. METHODS: Self-identified hunters were noted in the ED log of a rural Colorado hospital from 1997 to 2005,

Newspaper coverage of injuries affecting the Spanish surname population in two counties in Colorado.

The present study assessed newspaper reports of injuries affecting individuals with Spanish surnames and compared newspaper reports to hospital injury discharge data in two counties in Colorado. Newspaper reports came from 12 daily and weekly newspapers. Hospital discharge data were obtained from the Colorado Department of Public Health and the Environment. Motor vehicle crashes, assault and legal intervention, and suicide and suicidal acts were counted. A higher proportion of people with Spanish surnames were reported in newspapers than expected based on the hospital discharge data. Motor veh

Rates of diseases and their associated costs in two Colorado sheep feedlots (1985-1986).

Data related to rates of disease and their associated costs were collected for 12 months from 2 sheep feedlots in northern Colorado. There was an apparent seasonal occurrence of many of the diseases. Pneumonia, enterotoxemia, acidosis, and transport tetany accounted for most of the diseases seen in these feedlots and were responsible for most of the economic losses. There was a large difference in the incidence of diseases between the 2 feedlots and in the expenditures for disease prevention between the 2 feedlots.

The incidence of pregnancy-induced hypertension is increased among Colorado residents at high altitude.

Both pregnancy-induced hypertension and high-altitude residence are associated with fetal growth retardation, thereby leading us to hypothesize that pregnancy-induced hypertension would be more common at high than at low altitude. Retrospectively collected data in Colorado revealed that pregnancy-induced hypertension was more common at 3,100 m (12%) than at 2,410 m (4%) or 1,600 m (3%) (P less than 0.001). Proteinuria and edema in the upper extremities were also more frequent at 3,100 m than at 1,600 m (proteinuria = 28% versus 9%, P less than 0.001; edema of upper extremities = 22% versus 13%

Longitudinal Associations Between Sexual Victimization and Substance Misuse Among High School Youth in Colorado.

There are consistently high rates of sexual victimization and substance misuse among youth in the United States. Although there is a known relation between sexual victimization and substance use, there is a gap in the research regarding the magnitude and temporality of these associations. This study examined whether latent classes of sexual victimization and help-seeking attitudes longitudinally predict intentions of future substance misuse 7-10 months later. Students from nine Colorado high schools (N = 533; M = age 16 years) completed surveys across two consecutive school semesters. Latent c

Severe Silicosis in Engineered Stone Fabrication Workers - California, Colorado, Texas, and Washington, 2017-2019.

Silicosis is an incurable occupational lung disease caused by inhaling particles of respirable crystalline silica. These particles trigger inflammation and fibrosis in the lungs, leading to progressive, irreversible, and potentially disabling disease. Silica exposure is also associated with increased risk for lung infection (notably, tuberculosis), lung cancer, emphysema, autoimmune diseases, and kidney disease (1). Because quartz, a type of crystalline silica, is commonly found in stone, workers who cut, polish, or grind stone materials can be exposed to silica dust. Recently, silicosis outbr

Whitewater Rafting and Kayaking Deaths in Colorado: Increasing Preventative Measures by Understanding Risk Factors.

INTRODUCTION: Whitewater rafting and kayaking are popular, adventurous excursions that are provided along various rivers throughout the United States. We expect that certain individuals' comorbid medical conditions may increase the risk of mortality by preventing them from being physically able to avoid inadvertently entering the water and subsequently rescue themselves. METHODS: Retrospective data were collected from 11 El Paso County, Colorado coroner cases from 2014-2017 in which the individual was whitewater rafting or kayaking and drowning was determined to be the primary cause of death.
