To expand the tripartite mission to advance health equity, academic medical centers (AMCs) need to look outside their walls. In 2018, Stanford's primary care division launched the Community Partnership Program (CPP) between their AMC and local safety-net community health centers (CHCs) to support the goals of meaningful community engagement and addressing local clinic capacity needs. The CPP embeds Stanford physician faculty in local CHCs through service agreements. This study aimed to characterize the experiences of CHC leaders and faculty involved in the CPP to better understand barriers and

PRELIMINARY STUDIES: Inventory and observations at Juaben Teaching Health Center (JTHC) revealed an inability to treat obstetric complications. Women with complications needed to be referred to other institutions, resulting in delays.
INTERVENTIONS: During 1993 and 1994, an operating theater and blood bank were established and equipped, the maternity refurbished, and a revolving drug fund created. A physician was posted and trained in obstetrics, and midwives were trained in life-saving skills. A running water supply was established. Subsequent community interventions focused on improving acc

Modern cancer centers face increasing data-driven demands from institutional, state, and federal stakeholders, as well as from patients and communities. Data now functions as a strategic asset that supports care delivery, research, education, community engagement, and policy improvement and development. However, many cancer centers continue to operate with fragmented systems, limited interoperability, and underdeveloped analytics capacity, which constrain their ability to meet expectations or drive innovation. This perspective advocates for adopting a Learning Health System - Learning Health C

BACKGROUND: Before implementation of the Massachusetts Partnerships for Care (MA P4C) project, Massachusetts did not routinely provide HIV partner services to newly diagnosed individuals. Identification of individuals disengaged from HIV care and assistance for re-engagement relied on community- and clinic-based HIV medical case management services. Processes to identify individuals out of HIV care used either surveillance or clinic data, but did not combine both.
METHODS: The Massachusetts Department of Public Health collaborated with 6 community health centers to implement HIV partner servi

The COVID-19 vaccine rollout in the United States had significant disparities with Black, Hispanic, and other historically marginalized populations experiencing lower vaccination rates compared to white residents. In response, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention funded Prevention Research Centers across the country to establish the Vaccine Confidence Network. The Harvard Prevention Research Center (HPRC) partnered with community-based organizations (CBOs) in three of the hardest-hit cities in Massachusetts. CBOs implemented a community health ambassador model, hiring community membe

INTRODUCTION: Overdose events related to illicit opioids and other substances are a public health crisis in Canada. The BC Provincial Overdose Cohort is a collection of linked datasets identifying drug-related toxicity events, including death, ambulance, emergency room, hospital, and physician records. The datasets were brought together to understand factors associated with drug-related overdose and can also provide information on pathways of care among people who experience an overdose.
OBJECTIVES: To describe pathways of recorded healthcare use for overdose events in British Columbia, Canad

Articles published in the two most prominent journals of community psychology in North America, the American Journal of Community Psychology (AJCP) and Journal of Community Psychology (JCP), provide a clear indicator of trends in community research and practice. An examination of community psychology's history and scholarship suggests that the field has reduced its emphasis on promoting mental health, well-being, and liberation of individuals with serious mental illnesses over the past several decades. To further investigate this claim, the current review presents an analysis of articles relev

The Slovenian experience of establishing community-based mental health (CBMH) services, including expanding CBMH centers, securing funding, enhancing training, and involving mental health workers, offers a valuable example for the Philippines and other LMICs. It shows that community-based mental health reform needs professionals, empowered communities, and capable local leaders. This paper emphasizes the applicability of Slovenian insights in LMICs, using the Philippines as an example. It highlights the roles of barangay officials and BHWs in implementing CBMH, as they can bridge policy and pr

BACKGROUND: Community Health Centres (CHCs) are community-governed organizations often located in communities facing significant challenges with social determinants of health. To date, no review has summarized the evidence on the effects of team-based models of care on patient outcomes. The objective of this systematic review was to synthesize the evidence on the characteristics of interprofessional teams practicing in CHCs and their associations with patient outcomes.
METHODS: A systematic review was conducted following the guidelines of the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interv

Background: Very few studies have investigated telepharmacy (TP) in critical care. This scoping review undertook this task. Methods: We searched the following five electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, WoS, Scopus, CINAHL). Data were extracted from the articles and mapped out. Arksey and O'Malley's 6-step framework was used, and data synthesis identified activities, benefits, economic impact, challenges, and knowledge gaps of TP in critical care. Results: Out of 77 reports retrieved, 14 were included in the review as per inclusion criteria. Eight studies (57%) were published since 2020, and 9

BACKGROUND AND OVERVIEW: The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, or NIDCR, in 2001 sponsored the establishment of Centers for Research to Reduce Oral Health Disparities. The centers are based at Boston University; New York University; the University of Michigan; the University of Washington; and the University of California, San Francisco. Reflecting the importance of research to reduce disparities, the centers, along with related grants, represent one of the largest financial commitments ever made by the NIDCR. The centers are sponsored in part by the National Center on Mi

Palliative care (PC) has traditionally developed within hospital settings, shaped by biomedical models, specialist hierarchies, and episodic care delivery. However, demographic change, rising multimorbidity, patient preferences, and health system constraints increasingly challenge hospital-centric approaches. In contrast, improving the community palliative care model requires moving beyond the simple decentralization of services toward a more integrated, person-centered, and ethically grounded system of care. At its core, an effective community model must recognize the individuality of people

PURPOSE: Listening in healthcare practice is often overlooked. This article addresses the misconception that listening in rehabilitation and healthcare is a simple skill, and proposes a conceptual framework of effective listening in healthcare conversations, based on conceptualizations, attributes, and outcomes associated with listening.
METHOD: A critical review was conducted, encompassing literature on listening in everyday and healthcare conversations. Articles were retrieved through database and hand searching.
RESULTS: Although various types of listening have been proposed, they share c

One difficulty of moving the focus of care for the mentally ill from hospital to the community is that some patients with severe mental illness, who have been in hospital for a long time, are difficult to place in the community. The main problems that appear to be barriers to community-based care are aggressiveness and adverse sexual behaviour. New antipsychotics, such as risperidone, are likely to increase the proportion of patients who can be successfully placed in the community because the low liability for extrapyramidal symptoms will contribute to better compliance. A crucial aspect of th

OBJECTIVES: Colorectal cancer (CRC) screening rates continue to be low among safety-net populations. We sought to elucidate the impact of social determinants of health (SDOH) on the noncompletion of fecal immunochemical tests (FITs) and colonoscopies at the Providence Community Health Centers (PCHC).
STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective cohort review of PCHC patients with associated SDOH profiles between December 1, 2018, and December 1, 2019.
METHODS: We analyzed fulfilled and unfulfilled CRC screening orders (FITs and colonoscopies) and examined associations and odds ratios between order

With increasing population displacement and worsening water insecurity after the 2010 earthquake, Haiti experienced a large cholera outbreak. Our goal was to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of seven community health facilities' ability to respond to a surge in cholera cases. Since 2010, Catholic Relief Services (CRS) with a number of public and private donors has been working with seven health facilities in an effort to reduce morbidity and mortality from cholera infection. In November 2012, CRS through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)'s support, asked the Johns Hopki
