Developing the Autism Model of Implementation for autism spectrum disorder community providers: study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Currently, 1 out of 88 children are diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and the estimated cost for treatment services is $126 billion annually. Typically, ASD community providers (ASD-CPs) provide services to children with any severity of ASD symptoms using a combination of various treatment paradigms, some with an evidence-base and some without. When evidence-based practices (EBPs) are successfully implemented by ASD-CPs, they can result in positive outcomes. Despite this promise, EBPs are often implemented unsuccessfully and other treatments used by ASD-CPs lack sup

An Integrated Regional Pediatric Asthma Program: Partnering With School Systems to Improve Child Health.

Asthma is a leading cause of chronic illness and school absenteeism in the United States and asthma-related health inequities persist. Innovative cross-sector interventions are needed to address inequities in pediatric asthma, yet few exist. This article describes a regional pediatric asthma program that uses an integrated case management model of care. The program is innovative in that it provides cost effective outreach, integration across providers and systems, and access to care. We explore the unique history, successes, and experiences in addressing equity and a reduction of pediatric ast

MoodNetwork: An Innovative Approach to Patient-centered Research.

INTRODUCTION: Research has often been viewed as a passive process by which participants enroll in studies developed by researchers. It is becoming clearer that to understand the nuances of mood episodes and how to prevent them, we need to conduct large clinical trials that have the power to investigate moderators and mediators, or catalysts and mechanisms of change. MoodNetwork, the first online, patient-centered research community for individuals with mood disorders, aims to change the way that traditional research has been conducted by involving patients, their caregivers, and advocates in t

Closing the gap in cochlear implant access for African-Americans: a story of outreach and collaboration by our cochlear implant program.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Minorities often lag behind in hearing loss evaluation and treatment. Our cochlear implant program aimed to identify the socioeconomic and cultural barriers that prevented our African-American cochlear implant candidates from seeking help for their hearing loss, specifically cochlear implant surgery. RECENT FINDINGS: Our pilot study surveyed 11 African-Americans with cochlear implants and identified obstacles that included patient-physician mistrust, social stigma, financial cost, and lack of education about the devices and procedures. Our experienced cochlear implant team

Of timelines and timeliness: lessons from Typhoon Haiyan in early disaster response.

Typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines on 8 November 2013 with maximum sustained winds of 235 kilometres per hour, adversely affecting at least 11 million people and displacing some 673,000 in the central regions of the country. The disaster clearly overwhelmed the Philippine government despite its seemingly well-crafted disaster management plan. Using timelines of different organisations, this paper identifies gaps in the government's response, mainly due to its failure in coordinating and managing relief operations, which adversely affected its effectiveness and efficiency in the delivery of

Health services responses to disasters in Mumbai sharing experiences.

In mass disaster situations, demands frequently exceed the capacity of personnel and facilities. In the last few years, there has been an increased incidence of civil disasters; the spectrum of possible catastrophes has also dramatically increased as a result of an increasingly technologically sophisticated society. During the last 15 years, varied terrorist activities have become increasingly common as expressions of the opinions of extreme political groups, especially in India. In Mumbai itself, we have witnessed disasters such as widespread riots, terrorist bomb blasts, floods, and fires. T

Health care services for homebound aged maintain independence, limit costs.

Aged, homebound people suffer from a complex of problems too diverse for one health worker to handle successfully. Comprehensive programs using hospital-based health care teams to provide services for these people in their own homes can forestall enforced transfer to a long-term care facility or unattended death.

An exploratory attempt to distinguish subgroups among crack-abusing African-American women.

Despite the significant emergence of research on female addiction over the last two decades, specific research on African-American women substance abusers, particularly crack cocaine users, is limited. The identification of meaningful subgroups of substance abusing populations, particularly minority women is important both clinically, and because of their over-representation in the epidemiological data on crack cocaine use in many urban centers across this country. An extensive battery of instruments was administered to 110 women entering treatment in an intensive outpatient substance abuse tr

Building Community Relations and Promoting Cancer Prevention: An Oral Cancer Screening Event.

Communities often call upon their university hospitals to help with health screening events. Otolaryngologists can play an important role in prevention and education. We recently evaluated 285 community members at an oral cancer screening event at a community health "expo." An intake form and oral exam identified 67 with conditions that warranted further evaluation: 16 for dental follow-up; 25 for further ear, nose, and throat (ENT) evaluation; and 26 for primary care follow-up. One patient was identified with laryngeal cancer after referral for dysphonia. The event served to increase awarenes

Gerontological social work and cardiac rehabilitation.

Cardiac rehabilitation is a setting in which integrating social work services can benefit older adults. Many cardiac rehabilitation patients endorse symptoms of stress and depression following a cardiac event, impeding their ability to participate fully in cardiac rehabilitation services or recover from a heart attack. Gerontologically trained social workers can improve the care of older adults with heart disease in a variety of ways and this paper discusses the potential roles social workers can play in enhancing care. Two examples demonstrating how community academic partnerships can lead to

Response to direct and indirect recruitment for a randomised dental clinical trial in a multicultural population of elders.

INTRODUCTION: Aromatherapy is claimed to be effective for the treatment of psychosocial disorders, but objective evidence of its effectiveness is still lacking. Psychosocial disorders have been demonstrated to increase postoperative pain and opioid consumption by up to 50%. This study was designed to assess the effectiveness of Aromatherapy in controlling postoperative pain and opioid in anxious patients. METHODS: This prospective, randomized, placebo-controlled study was conducted on anxious patients who underwent primary unilateral total hip arthroplasty. After obtaining signed informed con

Livelihood pragmatism: Economic precarity and informal animal health management in rural Cambodia.

The emergence of zoonotic diseases is increasingly recognized as a critical global health threat, especially in rural Southeast Asia experiencing rapid socio-demographic and environmental changes. However, the socio-material and economic dimensions influencing spillover risks remain poorly understood by institutional health frameworks. This ethnographic study examines how economic precarity, environmental degradation, and inadequate veterinary services shape human-animal relations and animal health practices in three rural communities of Battambang province in Cambodia. Based on ethnographic o

Incarcerated women's relationship-based strategies to avoid drug use after community re-entry.

While recent research has stressed the supportive role that family and friends play for incarcerated persons as they re-enter the community, drug-using incarcerated women re-entering the community often have to rely on family, community, and intimate relationships that have played a role in their substance abuse and criminalization. In this study the authors conducted qualitative analysis of clinical sessions with rural, drug-using women (N = 20) in a larger prison-based HIV risk reduction intervention in Kentucky during 2012-2014 to examine incarcerated women's perceptions of the role of thei

"Access to healthcare is a human right": a constructivist study exploring the impact and potential of a hospital-community partnered COVID-19 community response team for Toronto homeless services and congregate living settings.

BACKGROUND: Individuals experiencing homelessness face unique physical and mental health challenges, increased morbidity, and premature mortality. COVID -19 creates a significant heightened risk for those living in congregate sheltering spaces. In March 2020, the COVID-19 Community Response Team formed at Women's College Hospital, to support Toronto shelters and congregate living sites to manage and prevent outbreaks of SARS-CoV-2 using a collaborative model of onsite mobile testing and infection prevention. From this, the Women's College COVID-19 vaccine program emerged, where 14 shelters wer
