Sustainable valorization of traditional Chinese medicine residues via semi-permeable membrane composting: the impacts of nitrogen sources.

Driven by global disease challenges, the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) industry has flourished, however, the massive surge in TCM residues has emerged as a major bottleneck to its sustainable development. Semi-permeable membrane aerobic composting provides a key technology for TCM residue valorization, which typically relies on exogenous nitrogen supplementation to optimize the carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) balance. Nevertheless, a systematic understanding of how differentiated nitrogen sources impact this composting process remains lacking. Herein, this study introduced distinct nitrogen sour

Dynamics of antibiotic resistance genes and bacterial community during pig manure, kitchen waste, and sewage sludge composting.

Organic solid wastes (OSWs) are important reservoirs for antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Aerobic composting transforms OSWs into fertilizers. In this study, we investigated ARGs dynamics and their driving mechanisms in three OSW composts: pig manure (PM), kitchen waste (KC), and sewage sludge (SG). The dominant ARGs were different in each OSW, namely tetracycline, aminoglycoside, and macrolide resistance (PM); tetracyclines and aminoglycosides (KC); and sulfonamides (SG). ARGs abundance decreased in PM (71%) but increased in KC (5.9-fold) and SG (1.3-fold). Interestingly, the ARGs abundanc

Odorous gas emissions from sewage sludge composting windrows affected by the turning operation and associated health risks.

The treatment and disposal of sewage sludge (SL) has long been a challenging task in China. Open windrow composting, coupled with mechanical turning, is preferred in small cities and rural areas, due to low costs and ease of operation. However, the emission of odorous volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from open composting windrows, as well as related health risks, has aroused strong protests from surrounding populations. This study investigated VOC emissions (including hydrogen sulphide) from five open SL composting windrows at a single site, before, during and after turning operations, and ac

Total petroleum hydrocarbons and influencing factors in co-composting of rural sewage sludge and organic solid wastes.

Co-composting is an efficient strategy for collaborative disposal of multiple organic wastes in rural areas. In this study, we explored the co-composting of rural sewage sludge and other organic solid wastes (corn stalks and kitchen waste), with a focus on the variation of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) during this process. 12% corn-derived biochar was applied in the composting (BC), with no additives applied as the control treatment (CK). The TPH contents of piles after composting ranged from 0.70 to 0.74 mg/g, with overall removal efficiencies of 35.6% and 61.1% for CK and BC, respective

A comparison of antibiotics, antibiotic resistance genes, and bacterial community in broiler and layer manure following composting.

Animal manure is an important source of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the environment. However, the difference of antibiotic residues and ARG profiles in layer and broiler manure as well as their compost remains unexplored. In this study, we investigated the profiles of twelve antibiotics, seventeen ARGs, and class 1 integrase gene (intI1) in layer and broiler manure, and the corresponding compost at large-scale. Compared with layer manure, broiler manure exhibited approximately six times more residual tetracyclines, especially chlortetracycline. The relative abundances

From compost to clean energy: influence of cathode potential evolution on hydrogen production in bioelectrochemical reactors.

Microbial bioelectrochemical technologies rely on the development of biofilms on electrode surfaces; therefore, a high surface area in packed anodes is advantageous for their performance. In addition, bioelectrochemical reactors (BERs) for hydrogen production require low-cost installation materials to enable large-scale implementation. In this study, a one-liter BER was constructed using 0.38 L of carbon felt as a packed bioanode, 0.65 L of compost leachate as the electrolyte, and a stainless-steel mesh cathode. The reactor was operated under an anode potential of 0.05 V vs. Ag/AgCl (KCl, 3.5

Comparative study on organic composts in blueberry: insights into soil physicochemical properties and heavy metal control.

Composts of edible fungal substrates (CEFS) and Chinese herbal residues (CCHR) are potential ecological organic fertilizers, which are sustainable for blueberry cultivation. But how the two composts affect the fertility and the migration or transformation of heavy metals (HMs) in blueberry soil is unknown. In this study, we conducted a field trial by comparing CEFS and CCHR to the special fruit organic fertilizer in the market (SFOF) and potassium sulfate compound fertilizers (PSCF) according to a three-year continuous fertilization experiment in blueberry. We aimed to reveal the effect of dif

Sheep Manure as a Potential Source of Tomato Brown Rugose Fruit Virus and Composting as a Mitigation Strategy.

Tomato brown rugose fruit virus (ToBRFV) is a tobamovirus posing significant threats to tomato production worldwide because it overcomes the currently deployed genetic resistance. This study investigated a previously undocumented transmission route involving livestock, demonstrating that ToBRFV-infected tomato plant debris fed to sheep can result in the presence of viral RNA in manure and consequential infectivity demonstrated by bioassays. To mitigate this risk, we evaluated composting as an alternative crop residue management strategy. Infected plant debris was composted under controlled aer

Tracking Enterobacteria, microbiomes, and antibiotic resistance genes from waste to soil with repeated compost applications.

The dissemination of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and genes is one factor responsible for the increasing antibiotic resistance and the environment plays a role in resistance spread. Animal excreta can contribute to the contamination of the environment with ARBs and antibiotics and in some cases, environmental bacteria under antibiotic pressure may acquire antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) from ARBs by horizontal gene transfer. In Guadeloupe, a French overseas department, organic amendments derived from human and animal waste are widely used in soil fertilization, but their contribution

From waste to protein: a new strategy of converting composted distilled grain wastes into animal feed.

Distilled grain waste (DGW) is rich in nutrients and can be a potential resource as animal feed. However, DGW contains as much as 14% lignin, dramatically reducing the feeding value. White-rot fungi such as Pleurotus ostreatus could preferentially degrade lignin with high efficiency. However, lignin derivatives generated during alcohol distillation inhibit P. ostreatus growth. Thus, finding a new strategy to adjust the DGW properties to facilitate P. ostreatus growth is critical for animal feed preparation and DGW recycling. In this study, three dominant indigenous bacteria, including Sphingob

Detection of azole-resistant Aspergillus fumigatus in the environment from air, plant debris, compost, and soil.

Aspergillus fumigatus is a ubiquitous fungus, a saprophyte of plants, and an opportunistic pathogen of humans. Azole fungicides are used in agriculture to control plant pathogens, and azoles are also used as a first line of treatment for aspergillosis. The continued exposure of A. fumigatus to azoles in the environment has likely led to azole resistance in the clinic where infections result in high levels of mortality. Pan-azole resistance in environmental isolates is most often associated with tandem-repeat (TR) mutations containing 34 or 46 nucleotides in the cyp51A gene. Because the rapid d

Effects of multi-phase inoculation on the fungal community related with the improvement of medicinal herbal residues composting.

Composting has become the most important way to recycle medicinal herbal residues (MHRs). The traditional composting method, adding a microbial agent at one time, has been greatly limited due to its low composting efficiency, mutual influence of microbial agents, and unstable compost products. This study was conducted to assess the effect of multi-phase inoculation on the lignocellulose degradation, enzyme activities, and fungal community during MHRs composting. The results showed that multi-phase inoculation treatment had the highest thermophilic temperature (68.2 °C) and germination index (1
