[View of the past: Roentgenography of an Egyptian mummy].

Report concerning roentgenographic examinations of an Egyptian mummy dating back to 900 B.C. from the "Museum für Völkerkunde Freiburg/Breisgau". The study was performed to detect funeral gifts which can be found otherwise only if the linnen bandage of the mummy is destroyed. Extraordinary findings were degenerative osteoarthritis of the spine and joints, pseudo-gout, marked caries of several teeth and signs for a healed occipital osteomyelitis. Suggestions are discussed about a particular compression of thorax and pelvis which is apparently due to the technique of bandaging. This was not obse

The morel-lavallée lesion as a rare differential diagnosis for recalcitrant bursitis of the knee: case report and literature review.

A 72 year-old-male was referred to our institution with recalcitrant prepatellar bursitis. The injury was sustained after striking his right knee against a post whilst horse riding 9 months ago. Previous treatments included repeated aspiration and excision of the bursa with elastic compression bandaging. A diagnosis of a Morel-Lavallée internal degloving injury was made, and the lesion was satisfactorily managed by an internal quilting procedure to eliminate the potential dead space. A review of the literature reveals 29 published reports of Morel-Lavallée lesions with sufficient information f

A review of the microcirculation in skin in patients with chronic venous insufficiency: the problem and the evidence available for therapeutic options.

Impairment of the cutaneous microcirculation is a major predisposing factor in inflammation and ulceration in patients with chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). Increase of capillary filtration rate predisposes to the formation of edema. Local lymphedema is a complication of CVI, often underdiagnosed. This review is focused on CVI but excludes the complication of ulceration. Treatment of microcirculatory dysfunction can be done by pharmacologic intervention or compression therapy or using a combination of both. This review is focused on drugs that have been evaluated by randomized prospective c

Surgical Management of Lumbar Disc Herniation in Late Pregnancy Under General Anesthesia in the Prone Position: A Case Report.

Symptomatic lumbar disc herniation during pregnancy is rare, and surgery in the prone position during late pregnancy is challenging because of the risk of abdominal and aortocaval compression. A 42-year-old woman at 32 weeks of gestation presented with severe bilateral buttock pain, left radiculopathy, perineal sensory disturbance, and later bladder and bowel dysfunction due to L4-5 lumbar disc herniation. Emergency posterior lumbar discectomy was performed under general anesthesia in the prone position. A four-point support table combined with hammock-style abdominal suspension using elastic

Liquid transmission characteristics of padding bandages under pressure.

Padding is an essential component in a multilayer compression bandaging system, used inside the compression bandage through which substantial amount of pressure is exerted on the limb of patient for treatment of venous leg ulcers. As a result, the liquid transmission behavior of padding is also critical in managing body fluids or sweat exuded from the affected limb, reducing the excessive moisture build-up around the wound and thereby ensuring comfort to and hence a better compliance from the patients. This study investigates the in-plane fluid transport characteristics of needle-punched nonwo

Does size matter? The impact of calf muscle volume on venous return in patients with venous leg ulcers.

OBJECTIVES: The calf muscle pump is recognized as an integral component of effective venous return from the lower limbs. The aim of this study was to determine if there is a correlation between calf muscle volume and venous blood flow among patients with venous leg ulcers. METHODS: Nine patients with venous leg ulceration were recruited for this study. These patients underwent haemodynamic testing using duplex ultrasound to measure peak venous velocities in response to voluntary maximum plantar flexion, with and without compression bandaging. Each patient then had magnetic resonance imaging (

A randomised controlled clinical trial comparing the effectiveness of bandaging compared to the JuxtaCures™ device in the management of people with venous ulceration: Feasibility study.

INTRODUCTION: The mainstay of treatment for venous ulceration remains compression therapy. Velcro Wrap devices are being increasingly used in these patients despite limited evidence. This feasibility study aimed to compare standard bandaging to the JuxtaCures™ Velcro wrap device. METHODS: A single centre, unblinded RCT compared participants with venous ulceration randomised to either the JuxtaCures™ device or short stretch bandaging. Participants were followed up for 26 weeks. RESULTS: 160 participants were screened with 40 randomised. 3 participants in bandaging and 1 in JuxtaCures™ didn't

Reduction and discontinuation of compression therapy after lymphaticovenular anastomosis for upper extremity lymphedema.

BACKGROUND: Lymphaticovenular anastomosis (LVA) is known to reduce edema and prevent cellulitis in patients with lymphedema. However, standardized criteria for reducing or discontinuing compression therapy have not been established, and stage-specific outcomes remain unclear. Therefore, we investigated the efficacy of LVA in achieving partial reduction or complete discontinuation of compression therapy in patients with secondary upper extremity lymphedema. METHODS: We included 30 patients with secondary upper extremity lymphedema who underwent LVA and were followed for at least one year. Depe

Haddenham easywrap: the latest innovation in the management of lymphoedema.

The use of velcro compression wrapping devices in the management of lymphoedema and chronic oedema is not a new concept. Wraps have been available for many years and are being used widely in clinic and community settings where bandaging or traditional compression garments are not suitable. Furthermore, they are becoming more common when treating venous disease, patients with wounds and lipoedema. The aim of this article is to introduce the reader and clinician to the new Haddenham easywrap and to demonstrate why it is different to any other velcro wrapping device available. Case studies will b

Aetiological treatment of venous leg ulcers with compression therapy: real-life outcomes with two different procedures.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the healing outcomes and costs associated with the aetiological management of venous leg ulcers (VLUs) treated with recommended multicomponent bandages (MCBs) and short-stretch bandages (SSBs). METHOD: This observational study is a retrospective comparative study (Level 2b), based on the French administrative healthcare database (Système National des Données de Santé, SNDS). It includes patients treated from onset with reimbursed MCBs and SSBs for a VLU episode, between July 2018 and September 2020. Although other compression systems, such as long-stretch bandages, are

Two divergent paths: compression vs. non-compression in deep venous thrombosis and post thrombotic syndrome.

Use of compression therapy to reduce the incidence of postthrombotic syndrome among patients with deep venous thrombosis is a controversial subject and there is no consensus on use of elastic versus inelastic compression, or on the levels and duration of compression. Inelastic devices with a higher static stiffness index, combine relatively small and comfortable pressure at rest with pressure while standing strong enough to restore the "valve mechanism" generated by plantar flexion and dorsiflexion of the foot. Since the static stiffness index is dependent on the rigidity of the compression sy

A Randomized Trial Among Compression Plus Nonsteroidal Antiinflammatory Drugs, Aspiration, and Aspiration With Steroid Injection for Nonseptic Olecranon Bursitis.

BACKGROUND: Olecranon bursitis might be a minor problem in the outpatient clinic but relatively be common to occur. However, there are few well-designed studies comparing approaches to treatment. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) Which treatment (compression bandaging with nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs [NSAIDs], aspiration, or aspiration with steroid injections) is associated with the highest likelihood of resolution of nonseptic olecranon bursitis? (2) Which treatment is associated with earliest resolution of symptoms? (3) What factors are associated with treatment failure by 4 weeks? METHODS:

Case report: Alternative approach for management of refractory volume overload in heart failure: usefulness of venous leg compression.

BACKGROUND: Management of patients with refractory congestion, is one of the most important challenges in the field of heart failure (HF). Diuretic therapy remains the most widely used therapy to achieve euvolemia. However, some patients experience fluid overload despite the use of high-dose diuretics and new strategies to overcome diuretic resistance are needed. CASE SUMMARY: We report an 85 years-old male patient admitted for decompensated HF with persistent tissue fluid overload (peripheral edema) for more than two weeks despite high dose of intravenous furosemide with the combination of o

[Venous compression in venous insufficiency].

Compression is a mandatory therapeutic measure in all stages of venous insufficiency. This treatment, recommended by the French Health Authority (HAS), is consistently included in the protocols of therapeutic studies involving venous ulcers. Given the great variety in materials available and in the approaches of individual doctors, it is essential to avoid a dogmatic approach and instead to adapt treatment to the therapeutic results based on the premise that well-controlled treatment should result in improvement in trophic disorders and in patient comfort, while poor treatment is badly tolerat

Effectiveness of manual lymphatic drainage in intensive phase I therapy of breast cancer-related lymphedema-a retrospective analysis.

BACKGROUND: The standard therapy for lymphedema of any origin is complex physical decongestive therapy (CDT). It comprises manual lymph drainage (MLD), compression therapy (CT), exercise therapy (ET), skincare, and patient education. Additionally, intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) can be applied. However, the contribution of MLD to decongestion is repeatedly questioned. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This study re-analyzes a previous study during a 3-week decongestion period, comparing two different types of compression bandaging at the weekend. Sixty-one patients with unilateral breast cancer-
