Contraceptive risk-taking in a medically underserved, low-income population.

This study examines the phenomenon of contraceptive risk-taking, which is the nonuse of contraception by women who are sexually active, fertile and not pregnant or trying to become pregnant. Based on a survey sample of low-income women in their childbearing years who had not received family planning care or advice from a doctor or clinic for at least three years, the study analyzed demographic predictors of contraceptive risk-taking and also compared levels of contraceptive knowledge and pregnancy histories of noncontraceptors versus barrier contraceptors. Contraceptive risk-taking was found t

"And Isn't that the point?": pleasure and contraceptive decisions.

OBJECTIVE: Previous survey research indicates that women and men experience reduced sexual pleasure when using condoms, especially compared to nonbarrier family planning methods. This study seeks to explore those experiences of reduced pleasure in-depth and how they affect contraceptive method decisions and use. STUDY DESIGN: In-depth interviews with 30 men and 30 women between the ages of 18 and 36 years in the United States about their contraceptive decisions and use were analyzed. RESULTS: Both men and women complained about the way that condoms interfered with their sexual pleasure. Seve

Acceptability of an on-demand pericoital oral contraceptive pill: a systematic scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Access to an on-demand pericoital oral contraceptive pill - used to prevent pregnancy within a defined window around sexual intercourse - could offer women more reproductive agency. A contraceptive with this indication is not currently available in any market. This review aims to understand international user appeal for an on-demand pericoital oral contraceptive pill. METHODS: Systematic scoping review, comprising 30 peer-reviewed papers published between 2014-2023. RESULTS: Data from 30 papers reporting on research from 16 countries across five World Health Organisation regions

African indigenous contraception: A review.

In Africa, indigenous methods of contraception continue to play a significant role in preventing unwanted pregnancies despite the introduction and popularity of modern contraceptives. The current review identified the common techniques and practices of African indigenous contraception, and examined their mechanisms and reasons for use. We searched data bases such as Google Scholar, Scopus, Web of Science, EBSCohost, African Journals, Science Direct, textbooks, thesis and dissertations for research articles on African indigenous contraception. The six common techniques of African indigenous con

De-constructing 'choice': the social imperative and women's use of the birth control pill.

This paper examines the social construction of 'choice' in women's use of the oral contraceptive birth control pill. Using social and historical critiques of neo-liberalism, it is argued that the contemporary priority placed on 'choice' positions women in contradictory ways-requiring them to be both 'choosing' reproductive subjects and reproductive subjects with very few options. The paper works to de-construct contemporary understandings of choice and finds that women's use of the birth control pill is less an exercise of idealized individual agency than it is an act of repetition, tied to am

Contraceptive use among sexually active university students.

AIMS: The purpose of this exploratory study was to investigate factors related to contraceptive use and nonuse among a group of sexually active women attending a university. METHODS: From October 2006 to August 2007, 326 female students participated in a cross-sectional study at a large, public university. Women self-reported information on contraceptive behaviors via web-based and postal mail questionnaires. Among sexually active women, odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (Cls) were calculated to examine the association between various characteristics and the decision to use contr

Contraceptive Counseling in the Postpartum Period: Could Pediatricians Have a Role?

INTRODUCTION: Unplanned pregnancies lead to adverse health outcomes and contribute to economic burdens. A lack of continuity and consistency in immediate postpartum care may be a contributor. The most frequent postpartum medical encounters occur with the child's pediatric health care provider, which represents an opportunity to discuss postpartum contraception. Therefore, our objective was to evaluate postpartum family planning knowledge and behavior in women, and to assess the potential acceptability of a pediatrician-delivered intervention to improve knowledge of and convenient access to con

Barriers to Modern Contraceptive Use in Kinshasa, DRC.

Recent research from Kinshasa, DRC, has shown that only one in five married women uses modern contraception; over one quarter have an unmet need for family planning; and almost 400 health facilities across Kinshasa report that they provide modern contraception. This study addresses the question: with reasonable physical access and relatively high unmet need, why is modern contraceptive prevalence so low? To this end, the research team conducted 6 focus groups of women (non-users of any method, users of traditional methods, and users of modern methods) and 4 of husbands (of users of traditional

Caregiver attitudes towards HIV testing and contraceptive services for adolescents in Tanzania.

Adolescents are disproportionately vulnerable to unintended pregnancies and delayed HIV treatment in low-resource settings. Tanzanian policies support adolescent access to contraception and HIV testing and counseling (HTC) without parental consent if needed; however, parent/guardian disapproval could lead to unmet service needs. This qualitative study explores factors that influence caregivers' attitudes towards adolescents accessing these services independently. VITAA is a cluster RCT testing a school-clinic partnership to provide adolescent health check-ups in Tanzania. Semi-structured inter

An Intervention Delivered by Mobile Phone Instant Messaging to Increase Acceptability and Use of Effective Contraception Among Young Women in Bolivia: Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Although the most effective methods of contraception are available in Bolivia, unmet need for contraception among women aged 15 to 19 years is estimated to be 38% (2008), and the adolescent fertility rate is 71 per 1000 women (2016). Mobile phones are a popular mode to deliver health behavior support. We developed a contraceptive behavioral intervention for young Bolivian women delivered by mobile phone and guided by behavioral science. The intervention consists of short instant messages sent through an app over 4 months. OBJECTIVE: This trial aimed to evaluate the effect of the i

Association between Intimate Partner Violence and Contraceptive Use Discontinuation in India.

Research on the association between experiences of intimate partner violence (IPV) and contraceptive use discontinuation in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) is limited. This study aims to fill this important gap using microdata collected from women aged 15-49 in the 2015-2016 National Family Health Survey (NFHS). Analyses used multivariable multinomial logistic regressions stratified by long-acting reversible contraceptive methods (LARC)/non-LARC and condom/pill to examine the association between experience of IPV and contraceptive use discontinuation while still in need (DWSIN). [Differences in contraceptive practice in the city of São Paulo, Brazil: results of the Ouvindo Mulheres population survey].

Contraception is essential for women to be able to regulate their fertility, exercising a key dimension of reproductive rights. However, little is known about how women deal with this challenge in Brazil's largest city, São Paulo. To fill this gap, the population survey Ouvindo Mulheres: Contracepção no Município de São Paulo was conducted with a probabilistic sample of 4,000 women 15 to 44 years of age living in this city in 2015. This article presents the prevalence of contraceptive practice and analyzes factors associated with lack of contraception use and with types of contraceptives. Prev

Understanding pregnancy in a population of inner-city women in New Orleans--results of qualitative research.

Unintended pregnancy has conventionally been defined as a pregnancy that is mistimed or unwanted, and this classification has been widely used in survey research. This study explores the utility of these constructs for women who visited a family planning clinic and a prenatal clinic in inner-city New Orleans, LA, and, by extension, for women of similar background and experience. We used semi-structured, open-ended research to explore sexual debut and history, contraceptive knowledge and use, pregnancy history, partner relations, and service use among 77 women (73 of whom were African-American)

Knowledge, attitudes and beliefs about contraceptive and sexual consent negotiation among college women.

College women have the highest rates of sexual violence, sexually transmitted infections, and unintended pregnancy compared with women in all other age groups. Although much is known about sexual risk behaviors among college women, less is known about how women negotiate consent for contraceptive use during sexual encounters. Therefore, the purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to explore college women's knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs about contraceptive and sexual consent during dating relationships. Twenty-six women participated in five focus groups on two college campuses in

Pelvic inflammatory disease: the influence of contraceptive, sexual, and social life events.

In order to determine associations between pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and contraceptive, sexual, and social life events, 620 Danish women aged 15-54 were invited to participate in an in-depth interview. Of 585 participating women, 459 were consecutive gynecological in- or outpatients, and 126 were randomly selected from visitors in general practice. Data were analyzed by multivariate test statistics. The mean number of PIDs thereby retrospectively assessed was 1.0. Two-thirds had never had PID, one third had had on average 3 PIDs. Use of Post-Coital Strategies to Prevent Pregnancy: Findings from a National Sample of Adolescents and Young Adults in the United States.

In the context of increasing restrictions on sexual and reproductive health care, inadequate sex education, and increasing antihormonal contraceptive sentiment, we examined post-coital pregnancy prevention behavior among a nationally representative sample of U.S. adolescents and young adults (AYA). We developed a novel measure of post-coital contraceptive strategies (i.e., actions taken after sexual intercourse with the intent of reducing the likelihood of pregnancy) and fielded this measure for the first time as part of a 2025 online, population-based survey of English-speaking 15-29-year-old
