One of the most common manifestations of cardiac injury because of trauma is myocardial contusion. Today, the blurred definition and wide range of nonspecific clinical presentations led to absence in consensus of diagnostic pathways and criteria. Currently, the marker of cardiac injury measured at clinical level is troponin and instrumental diagnostic tool is ECG. The patients with elevated troponin level after the chest trauma should be suspected to have myocardial contusion as cardiogenic shock or arrhythmia might take place as a complication. The release of DAMPs after the trauma has been o

Pulmonary contusion (PC), defined as damage to the lung parenchyma with edema and hemorrhage, has classically been associated with acceleration-deceleration injuries. It is a frequent pathology in clinical practice. However, its clinical presentation and imaging findings are nonspecific. Patients with this entity can present with findings that can range from mild dyspnea to life-threatening respiratory failure and hemodynamic instability. We present the case of a 61-year-old man, a former smoker, who presented to the emergency department after suffering blunt chest trauma. On admission, he com

Acute compartment syndrome of the thigh is an exceptionally uncommon condition that can have severe consequences if not promptly and effectively treated. A 19-year-old man presented to our emergency department with severe and progressive pain in his left thigh after sustaining a direct trauma during a football game 24 hours prior. Compartment pressure was assessed, confirming the diagnosis of compartment syndrome arising from a sizable intramuscular hematoma without detection of any other contributing factors. Fasciotomy incisions were closed using the shoelace technique with excellent functio

The article is devoted to the problem of proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) developing after severe contusions of the eyeball. Some experts doubt the possibility of developing such a severe complication after a closed eye injury, however, the accumulated literature data and research by scientists demonstrate a high probability of developing PVR in such cases, which could lead to adverse outcomes. The article presents the views of different authors and systematizes information about the frequency and the risk factors of developing PVR after different types of closed eye injury. The main purp

Post-traumatic epilepsy (PTE) is an important cause of poor prognosis in patients with cerebral contusions. The primary purpose of this study is to evaluate the high-risk factors of PTE by summarizing and analyzing the baseline data, laboratory examination, and imaging features of patients with a cerebral contusion, and then developing a Nomogram prediction model and validating it. This study included 457 patients diagnosed with cerebral contusion who met the inclusion criteria from November 2016 to November 2019 at the Qinghai Provincial People's Hospital. All patients were assessed for seizu

BACKGROUND: The rat mid-thoracic contusion model has been used to study at-level tactile allodynia, a common type of pain that develops after spinal cord injury (SCI). An important advantage of this model is that not all animals develop hypersensitivity. Therefore, it can be used to examine mechanisms that are strictly related to the development of pain-like behaviour separately from mechanisms related to the injury itself. However, how to separate animals that develop hypersensitivity from those that do not is unclear.
METHODS: The aims of the current study were to identify where hypersensit

Pulmonary contusions are a common injury in both military and civilian trauma patients. In austere and resource-limited settings common to deployment, military physicians may be limited on their ability diagnose or differentiate this entity from other traumatic injuries. We describe the use of ultrasound for the identification of pulmonary contusion in a patient with a gunshot wound while performing an extended Focused Assessment with Sonography (eFAST). The utility of ultrasound in polytraumatic patients stretches far beyond the initial FAST exam and can drastically inform clinical decision m

The present study was designed to investigate laryngeal function responses to chemoreceptor activation after unilateral high-cervical spinal cord contusion in rats. Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats received laminectomy or unilateral contusion at the C2 spinal cord. Both respiratory airflow and subglottal pressure were measured in spontaneously breathing rats at three days, two weeks, or six weeks after spinal surgery. Laryngeal closure responses were evoked via intrajugular capsaicin (1.5 μg/kg) administration and hypoxia (12.5% O2, 3 min) to activate bronchopulmonary C-fibers and chemoreceptors

Midcervical spinal cord contusion injury results in tissue damage, disruption of spinal pathways, and motor neuron loss. Unilateral C4 contusion results in loss of 40%-50% of phrenic motor neurons ipsilateral to the injury (~25% of the total phrenic motor neuron pool). Over time after unilateral C4 contusion injury, diaphragm muscle (DIAm) electromyogram activity increases both contralateral and ipsilateral to the side of injury in rats, suggesting compensation because of increased activation of the surviving motor neurons. However, the impact of contusion injury on DIAm force generation is le

The most common symptoms of a cerebral contusion include headache, dizziness, concentration problems, and memory loss. Insomnia is reported by more than half of the patients and can exacerbate symptoms. A 24-year-old previously healthy male presented with psychosis, acute personality changes, auditory and visual hallucinations three weeks after falling 15 feet with concurrent head trauma. A right-sided cerebral contusion with concussion was diagnosed on initial admission with increasing homicidal and suicidal ideations after 26 hours of insomnia. The patient accomplished rest after seven days

This report aimed to present the postmortem finding of toluene in a homicide victim buried under the ground for six years. The bones of the skull and limbs were exposed, and the remainder of the subcutaneous tissues, brain and heart had formed into adipocere. There were numerous fractures in the skull and the anterior side of the ribs. A cardiac contusion extending into the cavity of the right ventricle was also observed. No other obvious injuries were identified on the body. The concentration of toluene in the bone marrow within the head of the humerus was 58.4 μg/g. The cause of death was su

A 74-year-old woman, taking anticoagulant therapy for chronic heart failure, presented to our emergency room with left dorsiflexion weakness 8 hours from after multitrauma. A detailed neurological examination revealed only 0/5 strength in the left foot dorsiflexion without any upper motor neuron signs. While there was no spinal cord pathology detected, cranial computed tomography demonstrated a lesion in the right parasagittal localization consistent with hemorrhagic contusion. Clinical follow-ups showed an improvement in neurological findings with muscle power of 3/5 in day 5 and 5/5 in day 4

Respiratory failure is the leading cause of death after cervical spinal injury. We hypothesized that incomplete cervical spinal injuries would alter respiratory pattern and initiate plasticity in the neural control of breathing. Further, we hypothesized that the severity of cervical spinal contusion would correlate with changes in breathing pattern. Fourteen days after C4-C5 contusions, respiratory frequency and tidal volume were measured in unanesthetized Sprague Dawley rats in a whole body plethysmograph. Phrenic motor output was monitored in the same rats which were anesthetized, vagotomize

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the MRI diagnosis of bone contusion on the knee, and improve the diagnosis skill.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 47 cases of knee bone bruise with the performance of MRI in our hospital from 2008.5 to 2009.12, including 30 males and 17 females, aged from 12 to 69 years, with a mean of 34.5 years old. Forty-seven patients suffered from post-traumatic localized pain, tenderness and(or) soft tissue swelling and dysfunction. The time interval between the accident and the MRI examination ranged from 6 h to 30 days, averaged 7 days. The patients with only bone contusi

Treatment of pulmonary contusion when adequately established is very simple in most cases. Pathophysiological changes occur as a result of the effects produced by loss of chest wall integrity, accumulation of fluid in the pleural cavity, obstruction of the airways and lung dysfunction. The alveolar recruitment maneuver is the reopening of collapsed lung areas by increasing inspiratory pressure in the airway. The primary objective of this case report was to evaluate the effectiveness of the alveolar recruitment maneuver in a patient with pulmonary contusion. A 33 year old male patient, with a c

OBJECT: Apoptosis has increasingly been implicated in the pathobiology of traumatic brain injury (TBI). The present study was undertaken to confirm the presence of apoptosis in the periischemic zone (PIZ) of traumatic cerebral contusions and to determine the role of apoptosis, if any, in neurological outcome.
METHODS: Brain tissue harvested at Wentworth Hospital from the PIZ in 29 patients with traumatic supratentorial contusions was compared with brain tissue resected in patients with epilepsy. Immunohistochemical analyses were performed on the tissues to see if they contained the apoptosis-

Chest trauma in children is an indicator of injury severity and is associated with a high mortality rate. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of pulmonary contusion-laceration on short and long-term outcome of pediatric patients after blunt thoracic trauma. A retrospective analysis of records of 41 children aged 10 months to 17 years who were treated for pulmonary and associated injuries between 1986 and 2000 was done concerning mode of injury, types of injuries, management and outcome. In addition, a follow-up investigation was performed 4.5+/-1 years after injury. Of the pati

Acute compartment syndrome has been described as a result of thigh contusion in several contact sports, and emergent fasciotomy has routinely been recommended. However, recent data suggest that thigh contusions in athletes presenting with isolated elevation of compartment pressures in the absence of neurovascular deficits may be treated expectantly. We describe a case of anterior thigh contusion, which initially presented with isolated compartmental hypertension without neurovascular symptoms. Under nonoperative treatment the patient developed delayed acute compartment syndrome from persistent

Isolated sternal fractures are seen with an increasing frequency in traffic road accidents especially after the introduction of the seatbelt legislation. In most cases, the victims are young, otherwise healthy individuals. The medical records of all patients who were treated with a diagnosis of sternal fracture over the past 10 years were retrospectively reviewed. All patients with a radiologic diagnosis of sternal fracture were admitted for cardiac monitoring for at least 24 hours. ECG, determinations of cardiac enzyme levels CK (creatinephosphokinase) and CK-MB and evaluation by a cardiologi
