Physiological impairment and metabolic perturbations in Porites cylindrica induced by Hypnea pannosa contact.

Coral reef ecosystems are undergoing accelerated degradation, characterized by phase shifts marked by declining live coral cover and increasing macroalgal proliferation. However, the long-term metabolic adjustments of corals under chronic macroalgal competition remain poorly understood, particularly regarding the integration of physiological changes with metabolic responses resilience mechanisms. This study conducted a 21-day experiment to investigate the physiological and metabolomic response between coral Porites cylindrica and macroalgae Hypnea pannosa. Key findings revealed that direct phy

Species-specific interactions between algal endosymbionts and coral hosts define their bleaching response to heat and light stress.

The impacts of warming seas on the frequency and severity of bleaching events are well documented, but the potential for different Symbiodinium types to enhance the physiological tolerance of reef corals is not well understood. Here we compare the functionality and physiological properties of juvenile corals when experimentally infected with one of two homologous Symbiodinium types and exposed to combined heat and light stress. A suite of physiological indicators including chlorophyll a fluorescence, oxygen production and respiration, as well as pigment concentration consistently demonstrated

Assessment of multiple probiotic strains that protect Montipora capitata coral from infection by Vibrio coralliilyticus.

Coral disease outbreaks threaten reef ecosystems, often leading to widespread mortality and declines in coral cover. Outbreaks of tissue loss diseases like acute Montipora white syndrome (aMWS) have impacted coral populations that include the Hawaiian rice coral (Montipora capitata). Multiple strains of Vibrio coralliilyticus are known pathogens, and strain OCN008 has been demonstrated as an etiological agent of aMWS in Hawai'i. Recent work has demonstrated that probiotic bacterial strains can be used to directly treat or prevent transmission (prophylaxis) of coral diseases. Based on their pro

Coral metabolomic diversity is associated with restoration success.

As coral cover declines worldwide, coral propagation has become a necessary strategy to restore coral reefs. However, predation can negatively affect the survival of coral microfragments used in restoration. While predation in terrestrial plants is reduced via secondary metabolites that deter predators, the effects of secondary metabolites on coral survival and predation in the field are poorly understood. We placed Orbicella faveolata microfragments from ten different colonies in a predator-exclusion cage for 0 to 3 mo. We used untargeted metabolomics methods based on mass spectrometry to ana

Carbon-rich carbon nitride for singlet-oxygen-driven photocatalytic degradation of benzophenone-3 and coral vitality recovery.

Coral reefs, vital marine ecosystems, are increasingly threatened by global warming and chemical pollutants such as benzophenone-3 (BP-3), a widely used UV filter. To address this challenge, we present a carbon-doped graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) photocatalyst with efficient singlet oxygen (1O2) generation for BP-3 degradation and coral vitality restoration under simulated seawater conditions. The photocatalyst exhibits improved stability and photocatalytic performance in complex seawater environments, with enhanced charge separation and an approximately eightfold increase in the apparent

Coal dust pollution affects the early life cycle of brooding and broadcast-spawning corals.

Coral reefs are highly diverse and ecologically important ecosystems that are increasingly threatened by both natural and anthropogenic stressors. In the Colombian Caribbean, reef organisms are particularly vulnerable to pollution from coal dust, especially in areas near ports and maritime transport routes. This study evaluated the effects of coal dust on the early developmental stages of three reef-building coral species with different reproductive strategies: Orbicella faveolata, Favia fragum, and Acropora palmata. Gametes of O. faveolata and A. palmata were collected from Tayrona National N

The Fate of Coral Feeding Scars Following Predation by Individual Crown-of-Thorns Seastars.

Aggregated crown-of-thorns seastars (Acanthaster spp., COTS) in outbreak populations create large feeding scars that often result in complete coral colony mortality. In contrast, feeding scars produced by individual COTS may retain living coral tissue remnants, but the responses of these remnants post predation remain unknown. We tracked the fate of discrete feeding scars left after predation by individual Acanthaster cf. solaris from a low-density population at One Tree Reef on the Great Barrier Reef. We found that the average feeding scar size did not differ by season, despite variation in c

Shading by marine litter impairs the health of the two Indo-Pacific scleractinian corals Porites rus and Pavona cactus.

Marine litter is recognized as one factor affecting coral health. It causes shading, bleaching, physical damage, necrosis, and mortality. This study provides the first evidence that direct contact by plastic and cotton affects coral health within 60 days. In a controlled aquarium experiment, two common Indo-Pacific scleractinian corals, Porites rus and Pavona cactus, were shaded for 60 days by transparent plastic (polypropylene, PP), dark plastic (PP) and cotton. Cotton disintegrated completely after 30 to 42 days, allowing the corals to recover. Transparent plastic became opaque over time due

Predators can facilitate herbivory in nutrient-limited marine ecosystems.

Predators influence ecosystem functioning through consumptive and non-consumptive effects. Recent studies suggest that predators can also be an essential source of limiting nutrients in ecosystems such as coral reefs, potentially influencing prey ecology through nutrient input via their excreta. With rising commercial fishery, mesopredatory fishes are being selectively harvested from reefs. Yet, there is incomplete knowledge of the consequences of this extraction on essential ecosystem processes. Using field experiments and observations, we examined how mesopredatory fishes influence herbivory

Coral-YOLO: An Intelligent Optical Vision Sensing Framework for High-Fidelity Marine Habitat Monitoring and Forecasting.

Coral reefs are facing a catastrophic decline due to climate-induced bleaching, threatening critical marine biodiversity. Automated, large-scale monitoring is essential; however, modern object detectors are hindered by two fundamental limitations in complex underwater scenes: a spatial reasoning deficit in their decoupled heads, which inhibits robust multi-scale feature integration, and a feature robustness deficit, which renders deterministic networks vulnerable to stochastic visual variations. To address these limitations, we propose Coral-YOLO, a novel framework for detection and forecastin

Marine Envenomation in Okinawa: Overview and Treatment Concept.

Okinawa prefecture is a popular tourist destination due to its beaches and reefs. The reefs host a large variety of animals, including a number of venomous species. Because of the popularity of the reefs and marine activities, people are frequently in close contact with dangerous venomous species and, thus, are exposed to potential envenomation. Commonly encountered venomous animals throughout Okinawa include the invertebrate cone snail, sea urchin, crown-of-thorns starfish, blue-ringed octopus, box jellyfish, and fire coral. The vertebrates include the stonefish, lionfish, sea snake, and mora

Effects of cryopreservation-related processes on the settlement competence of coral larvae.

Coral larval settlement constitutes a pivotal bottleneck in reef persistence, restoration efforts, and the development of assisted conservation strategies such as cryopreservation. Beyond survival, the ability of larvae to retain settlement competence following cryopreservation-related stress is essential for the successful application of these approaches. Despite its ecological significance, the mechanistic basis underlying settlement induction remains incompletely understood. Here, we systematically investigate the interactive effects of low temperature, water-soluble chemical cues, and lipi

A widespread coral-infecting apicomplexan with chlorophyll biosynthesis genes.

Apicomplexa is a group of obligate intracellular parasites that includes the causative agents of human diseases such as malaria and toxoplasmosis. Apicomplexans evolved from free-living phototrophic ancestors, but how this transition to parasitism occurred remains unknown. One potential clue lies in coral reefs, of which environmental DNA surveys have uncovered several lineages of uncharacterized basally branching apicomplexans1,2. Reef-building corals have a well-studied symbiotic relationship with photosynthetic Symbiodiniaceae dinoflagellates (for example, Symbiodinium3), but the identifica

Modeling the Impact of White-Plague Coral Disease in Climate Change Scenarios.

Coral reefs are in global decline, with coral diseases increasing both in prevalence and in space, a situation that is expected only to worsen as future thermal stressors increase. Through intense surveillance, we have collected a unique and highly resolved dataset from the coral reef of Eilat (Israel, Red Sea), that documents the spatiotemporal dynamics of a White Plague Disease (WPD) outbreak over the course of a full season. Based on modern statistical methodologies, we develop a novel spatial epidemiological model that uses a maximum-likelihood procedure to fit the data and assess the tran

Hierarchical physiological sensitivity of the coral, Orbicella faveolata, to suspended sediment and elevated temperature.

Coral reefs are increasingly exposed to multiple environmental stressors, including ocean warming and elevated turbidity from coastal development, dredging, and sediment resuspension. Understanding how these stressors affect coral physiology is essential for improving sediment management and protecting reef ecosystems. We investigated the short-term physiological responses of the Caribbean reef-building coral, Orbicella faveolata, to suspended sediment and elevated temperature during controlled 72-h laboratory experiments. Coral fragments were first exposed in independent chamber-sump systems

Considerations for maximizing the adaptive potential of restored coral populations in the western Atlantic.

Active coral restoration typically involves two interventions: crossing gametes to facilitate sexual larval propagation; and fragmenting, growing, and outplanting adult colonies to enhance asexual propagation. From an evolutionary perspective, the goal of these efforts is to establish self-sustaining, sexually reproducing coral populations that have sufficient genetic and phenotypic variation to adapt to changing environments. Here, we provide concrete guidelines to help restoration practitioners meet this goal for most Caribbean species of interest. To enable the persistence of coral populati

Do reef fish habituate to diver presence? Evidence from two reef sites with contrasting historical levels of SCUBA intensity in the Bay Islands, Honduras.

Contact between humans and the marine environment is increasing, but the capacity of communities to adapt to human presence remains largely unknown. The popularization of SCUBA diving has added a new dimension to human impacts in aquatic systems and, although individual-level impacts have been identified, cumulative effects on ecosystem function and community-wide responses are unclear. In principle, habituation may mitigate the consequences of human presence on the biology of an individual and allow the quick resumption of its ecological roles, but this has not been documented in aquatic syst

Blocks of Identity by Descent Reveal the Dual Role Played by Reef Fish Larvae for Retention and Dispersal.

Isolation by distance, whereby genetic distance between individuals or populations increases with geographic distance, is a fundamental population genetic pattern that is observed across a broad range of taxa and spatial scales. This pattern can be driven by dispersal limitation and be thereby informative about dispersal rate ( σ ), a parameter of both basic and applied interest. Yet isolation by distance is typically directly estimated from microsatellite or single nucleotide polymorphism data, which does not permit the direct estimation of σ or allow to disentangle dispersal limitation fro

Microbial dysbiosis reflects disease resistance in diverse coral species.

Disease outbreaks have caused significant declines of keystone coral species. While forecasting disease outbreaks based on environmental factors has progressed, we still lack a comparative understanding of susceptibility among coral species that would help predict disease impacts on coral communities. The present study compared the phenotypic and microbial responses of seven Caribbean coral species with diverse life-history strategies after exposure to white plague disease. Disease incidence and lesion progression rates were evaluated over a seven-day exposure. Coral microbiomes were sampled a
