Clinical Outcome of Children With Corpus Callosum Agenesis.

BACKGROUND: Agenesis of the corpus callosum is a rare congenital brain malformation that can be associated with other cerebral malformations and/or underlying genetic causes. Prenatal counseling is hampered due to the lack of reliable long-term data on neurodevelopmental outcome. METHODS: Since 2010, a total of 23 children with agenesis of the corpus callosum (mean age 3.8 years, range 0.7 to 9.7 years) were registered in our ACC outpatient clinic and diagnosed in a standardized manner; the data were analyzed retrospectively. Prenatal and postnatal imaging, associated malformations, genetic a

Associated anomalies in cases with agenesis of the corpus callosum.

Agenesis of corpus callosum (ACC) is an uncommon congenital anomaly, its etiology is unclear and its pathogenesis is controversial. Cases with ACC often have other non-ACC associated congenital anomalies. The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence and the types of these associated anomalies in a defined population. The associated anomalies in cases with ACC were collected in all live births, stillbirths, and terminations of pregnancy during 29 years in 387,067 consecutive births in the area covered by our population-based registry of congenital malformations. Of the 99 cases with A

[Modern diagnostic of agenesis of the corpus callosum in children].

Observations of the authors regarding main MRI symptoms of agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC) and literature review on the structure of the corpus callosum in normalcy and pathology are presented. The authors emphasize that some cases of isolated ACC has been found during routine prenatal ultrasound examination. In this regard, prenatal MRI is more effective. In 74% patients with ACC, MRI results are consistent with the results of ultrasound and CT. MRI has advantages in the differentiation of inherited corpus callosum malformation as well as concomitant CNS abnormalities.

Proverb comprehension in individuals with agenesis of the corpus callosum.

Comprehension of non-literal language involves multiple neural systems likely involving callosal connections. We describe proverb comprehension impairments in individuals with isolated agenesis of the corpus callosum (AgCC) and normal-range general intelligence. Experiment 1 compared Gorham Proverb Test (Gorham, 1956) performance in 19 adults with AgCC and 33 neurotypical control participants of similar age, sex, and intelligence. Experiment 2 used the Proverbs subtest of the Delis-Kaplan Executive Function System (D-KEFS, 2001) to compare 19 adults with AgCC and 17 control participants with s

Sleep Problems in Children With Agenesis of the Corpus Callosum.

BACKGROUND: Very little is known about sleep habits in children with agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC). The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate sleep problems in children with ACC and examine the association with quality of life. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional, anonymous, internet-based survey offered to parents of children with ACC, aged five to 18 years. The Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ) and pediatric quality of life (PedsQL) were used to assess sleep habits and quality of life, respectively. Associations between the total and all subdomains of CSHQ and

Delusional Disorder in a Patient with Corpus Callosum Agenesis.

Agenesis of corpus callosum is rare and associated neuropsychiatric abnormalities reported are epilepsy, Asperger's syndrome, learning problems, depression, schizophrenia, conduct disorder and conversion symptoms. Schizophrenia is the most common psychiatric disorder reported among corpus callosum agenesis. We report a rare case of delusional disorder with corpus callosum agenesis and seizure disorder. The patient presented with delusions of persecution towards younger brother and mother, disturbed sleep and reduced appetite. She had a history of seizure disorder of ten years duration, which w

An MRI review of acquired corpus callosum lesions.

Lesions of the corpus callosum (CC) are seen in a multitude of disorders including vascular diseases, metabolic disorders, tumours, demyelinating diseases, trauma and infections. In some diseases, CC involvement is typical and sometimes isolated, while in other diseases CC lesions are seen only occasionally in the presence of other typical extra-callosal abnormalities. In this review, we will mainly discuss the MRI characteristics of acquired lesions involving the CC. Identification of the origin of the CC lesion depends on the exact localisation of the lesion(s) inside the CC, presence of oth

Verbal learning and memory in agenesis of the corpus callosum.

The role of interhemispheric interactions in the encoding, retention, and retrieval of verbal memory can be clarified by assessing individuals with complete or partial agenesis of the corpus callosum (AgCC), but who have normal intelligence. This study assessed verbal learning and memory in AgCC using the California Verbal Learning Test-Second Edition (CVLT-II). Twenty-six individuals with AgCC were compared to 24 matched controls on CVLT-II measures, as well as Donders׳ four CVLT-II factors (i.e., Attention Span, Learning Efficiency, Delayed Memory, and Inaccurate Memory). Individuals with Ag

Prenatal diagnosis of colpocephaly with absent corpus callosum.

Colpocephaly is a rare abnormality of the brain, described as persistence of primitive foetal configuration of lateral ventricles. It has been found in association with several abnormalities of the brain. Herein we report a case of colpocephaly with absent corpus callosum, confirmed antenatally with foetal MRI following diagnostic suspicion based on absent septum pellucidum at prenatal sonography.

Autism traits in individuals with agenesis of the corpus callosum.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) have numerous etiologies, including structural brain malformations such as agenesis of the corpus callosum (AgCC). We sought to directly measure the occurrence of autism traits in a cohort of individuals with AgCC and to investigate the neural underpinnings of this association. We screened a large AgCC cohort (n = 106) with the Autism Spectrum Quotient (AQ) and found that 45 % of children, 35 % of adolescents, and 18 % of adults exceeded the predetermined autism-screening cut-off. Interestingly, performance on the AQ's imagination domain was inversely correlated

The development of the corpus callosum in the healthy human brain.

The corpus callosum changes structurally throughout life, but most dramatically during childhood and adolescence. Even so, existing studies of callosal development tend to use parcellation schemes that may not capture the complex spatial profile of anatomical changes. Thus, more detailed mapping of callosal growth processes is desirable to create a normative reference. This will help to relate and interpret other structural, functional, and behavioral measurements, both from healthy subjects and pediatric patients. We applied computational surface-based mesh-modeling methods to analyze callosa

Corpus Callosum Shape Analysis with Application to Dyslexia.

Morphometric studies of the corpus callosum suggest its involvement in a number of psychiatric conditions. In the present study we introduce a novel pattern recognition technique that offers a point-by-point shape descriptor of the corpus callosum. The method uses arc lengths of electric field lines in order to avoid discontinuities caused by folding anatomical contours. We tested this technique by comparing the shape of the corpus callosum in a series of dyslexic men (n = 16) and age-matched controls (n = 14). The results indicate a generalized increase in size of the corpus callosum in dysle

[Corpus callosum. Landmark of the origin of cerebral diseases].

Diseases of the corpus callosum include developmental disorders, immunomodulated CNS diseases, vascular malformations, disturbances of metabolism including the electrolyte homeostasis, secondary degenerations and mechanical injuries. This report provides information on the differential diagnosis of reversible and irreversible pathological changes of the corpus callosum with special focus on the localization, which often allows conclusions on the pathogenesis to be drawn.

Social cognition in individuals with agenesis of the corpus callosum.

Past research has revealed that individuals with agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC) have deficits in interhemispheric transfer, complex novel problem-solving, and the comprehension of paralinguistic aspects of language. Case studies and family reports also suggest problems in social cognition. The performance of 11 individuals with complete ACC and with normal intelligence was compared to that of 13 IQ- and age-matched controls on three measures of social cognition. Individuals with ACC were indistinguishable from controls on the Happe Theory of Mind Stories and the Adult Faux Pas Test, but

Neurological and psychiatric aspects of corpus callosum genesis.

This article reports the case of a patient with partial agenesis of the corpus callosum manifested with corpus callosum syndrome together with signs of brain hemispheres dysfunction: mental impairment, epilepsy and pyramidal signs. The patient's malformation is combined with left-handedness while signs of callosal disconnection are not present. Mild cognitive impairment and late epilepsy onset require a multidisciplinary approach since the patient also displays elements of central nervous system malformations.

Bimanual motor coordination in agenesis of the corpus callosum.

The nature and extent of deficiencies in bimanual motor coordination in individuals with agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC) was studied using the computerized Bimanual Coordination Test (cBCT). Compared with previous bimanual tasks, the cBCT is more specifically reliant on interhemispheric interactions of lateralized motor control, allows more precise measurement, and permits examination of performance over a wider range of bimanual challenges. The cBCT performance of 13 high-functioning individuals with complete ACC was compared to 21 age- and IQ-matched controls. The groups did not differ
