The technique of delayed autogenous cortical bone grafting was used in 17 patients (6 women, 11 men, with an average age of 22 years) to treat diaphyseal defects resulting mainly from closed or compound fractures complicated by infection and bone tissue loss. Bones affected were the humerus in 1 case, the radius in 7 cases, the ulna in 4 cases, the radius and ulna in 2 cases, the first metacarpal in 1 case, and the femur in 2 cases. The average length of the defect was 5.7 cm and the graft, prepared from the anteromedial aspec of the tibia, was at least 1.5 cm longer than the defect. The graft

A 31-year-old motorcyclist presented with an open contaminated comminuted fracture of the shaft of the femur. The extruded diaphyseal segments were stored in a subcutaneous pouch in the thigh and subsequently replaced in the fracture site as a composite graft with iliac bone. The interval of in vito storage provided time for evaluation of infection and apparently allowed the bone to possess a limited degree of viability and function as a fresh autogenous graft.

The effects of thyroxine on cortical bone remodeling were studied under conditions of normal and accelerated remodeling induced by surgical elevation of the periosteum. Six adult female beagle dogs were administered orally 1.0 mg of L-thyroxine per kg body weight daily for 60 days. Static and dynamic changes were evaluated using tetracycline and DCAF (2,4-bis-N,N'-dicarboxymethyl aminomethyl fluorescein) in vivo double labeling of rib specimens taken before treatment and after 60 days. Thyroxine administered in moderate pharmacologic doses increased the activation frequency, number of bone-for

INTRODUCTION: Osteoporosis (OP) affects bone quality and quantity of millions of people worldwide. Osteoporotic fractures significantly decrease the quality of life of patients and are associated with increased mortality in the following years. Thus, there is continued clinical interest in treatments that preserve bone and mitigate fracture risk. As a routine method, several preclinical animal models exist to test current and potential OP treatments. However, most studies focus on trabecular bone, while cortical bone is under-studied, despite its significant role in bone strength and fragility

BACKGROUND: Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), a rare genetic disorder of collagen synthesis and metabolism, is characterized by cortical bone thinning and decreased trabecular bone. We have noted individuals with OI develop radiolucent lesions in the cortices of the long bones and these have not been previously described. The prevalence of these lesions in the long bones of children and the significance of their appearance in relation to subsequent fractures is unknown.
METHODS: In a retrospective study, upper and lower extremity radiographs of 328 pediatric patients with OI were examined to dete

BACKGROUND: During bone drilling, a common procedure in clinical surgeries, excessive heat generation and drilling force can cause damage to bone tissue, potentially leading to failure of implants and fixation screws or delayed healing. With this in mind, the aim of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of ultrasonic-assisted drilling compared to conventional drilling as a potential method for bone drilling.
METHODS: This study examined optimal drilling parameters based on previous findings and investigated both cortical and cancellous bone. In addition to evaluating drilling force and te

Severe bone defects or complex fractures can result in serious complications such as nonunion or insufficient bone healing. Tissue engineering, which involves the application of cells, scaffolds, and cytokines, is considered a promising solution for bone regeneration. Consequently, various animal models that simulate bone defects play a crucial role in exploring the therapeutic potential of tissue engineering for bone healing. In this study, we established a box-shaped cortical bone defect model in the mid-femur of rats, which could serve as an ideal model for assessing the function of biomate

BACKGROUND: Many studies have been conducted to compare traditional trajectory (TT) and cortical bone trajectory (CBT) screws; however, how screw parameters affect the biomechanical properties of TT and CBT screws, and so their efficacy remains to be investigated.
METHODS: A finite element model was used to simulate screws with different trajectories, diameters, and lengths. Responses for implant and tissues at the adjacent and fixed segments were used as the comparison indices. The contact lengths and spanning areas of the inserted screws were defined and compared across the varieties.

CONTEXT: Klinefelter syndrome (KS) is the most common sex aneuploidy in men. Affected males have hypogonadism, and, as a result, face an increased risk for osteoporosis and fractures. Androgen therapy is standard in adolescents and adults with KS but has not been used earlier in childhood.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of androgen treatment on bone mass in children with KS.
METHODS: Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial of oxandrolone (OX; 0.06 mg/kg daily; n = 38) versus placebo (PL; n = 40) for 2 years in boys with KS (ages 4-12 years). Changes in bone mass were

Increasing attention is being focused on the important contributions of cortical bone to bone strength, fractures and osteoporosis therapies. Recent progress in human genome wide association studies in combination with high-throughput mouse gene knockout phenotyping efforts of multiple genes and advanced conditional gene inactivation in mouse models have successfully identified genes with crucial roles in cortical bone homeostasis. Particular attention in this review is given to genes, such as WNT16, POSTN and SFRP4, that differentially affect cortical and trabecular bone architecture. We prop

BACKGROUND: Secondary hyperparathyroidism often causes progressive cortical thinning because of increased bone resorption at the endocortical surface and increases cortical porosity because of increased resorption at the intracortical surface. Because bone formation by minimodeling has not yet been reported in cortical bone, we investigated the effects of cortical minimodeling on the decrease in rate of bone loss.
METHODS: Thirty-five patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism were enrolled. Remodeling and minimodeling parameters at the endocortical and periosteal surfaces, as well as at the

BACKGROUND: In this study we evaluated bone abnormalities of patients with chronic renal failure (CRF) by cortical quantitative bone ultrasound (QUS) measurements at different bone sites because these abnormalities may be of variable etiology and may start before symptoms or radiological changes are manifested.
METHODS: Of fifteen patients with chronic renal failure, seven had moderate-severe disease and eight had been on chronic hemodialysis from 5 to 17 years, with renal osteodystrophy (ROD) confirmed by bone biopsies. Twelve normal subjects of similar age and gender volunteered for the con

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between posterior mandibular ridge morphology, cortical bone characteristics, and the Mandibular Cortical Index (MCI), and to assess their potential impact on the complexity of dental implant placement. Understanding these parameters is essential to optimize implant planning, minimize surgical complications, and improve clinical outcomes, particularly in regions where anatomical variations pose increased risks.
METHODS: In this retrospective observational study, 100 cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans of edentulous mandibles
