Age-related Reorganization of Corticomuscular Connectivity During Locomotor Perturbations.

Locomotor perturbations elicit cortical and muscular responses that help minimize motor errors through neural processes involving multiple brain regions. The anterior cingulate cortex monitors motor errors, the supplementary motor areas integrate sensory and executive control, and the posterior parietal cortices process sensorimotor predictions, while muscles show increased activation and co-contraction patterns. With aging, these neural control strategies shift; older adults demonstrate less flexible cortical and muscular responses, using compensatory overactivation and simpler muscle synergi

Amygdala and hippocampus dialogue with neocortex during human sleep and wakefulness.

ABSTRACT: Previous studies have described synchronic electroencephalographic (EEG) patterns of the background activity that is characteristic of several vigilance states. STUDY OBJECTIVES: To explore whether the background synchronous activity of the amygdala-hippocampal-neocortical circuit is modified during sleep in the delta, theta, alpha, sigma, beta, and gamma bands characteristic of each sleep state. METHODS: By simultaneously recording intracranial and noninvasive scalp EEG (10-20 system) in epileptic patients who were candidates for neurosurgery, we explored synchronous activity amon

Increased intensity of unintended mirror muscle contractions after cervical spinal cord injury is associated with changes in interhemispheric and corticomuscular coherences.

Mirror contractions refer to unintended contractions of the contralateral homologous muscles during voluntary unilateral contractions or movements. Exaggerated mirror contractions have been found in several neurological diseases and indicate dysfunction or lesion of the cortico-spinal pathway. The present study investigates mirror contractions and the associated interhemispheric and corticomuscular interactions in adults with spinal cord injury (SCI) - who present a lesion of the cortico-spinal tract - compared to able-bodied participants (AB). Eight right-handed adults with chronic cervical S

Visual input drives increased occipital responsiveness and harmonized oscillations in multiple cortical areas in migraineurs.

Migraineurs are hypersensitive for most sensory domains like visual, auditory or somatosensory processing even outside of attacks. This behavioral peculiarity is mirrored by findings of cortical hyper-responsivity already in the interictal state. Using repetitive visual stimulation to elicit steady state visually evoked potentials (SSVEP) in 30 interictal episodic migraineurs and 30 controls we show hyper-responsivity of the visual cortex in the migraineurs. Additionally, the occipital regions were remarkably stronger coupled to the temporal, premotor and the anterior cingulate cortex than in

Mutations in the SPAST gene causing hereditary spastic paraplegia are related to global topological alterations in brain functional networks.

AIM: Our aim was to describe the rearrangements of the brain activity related to genetic mutations in the SPAST gene. METHODS: Ten SPG4 patients and ten controls underwent a 5 min resting state magnetoencephalography recording and neurological examination. A beamformer algorithm reconstructed the activity of 90 brain areas. The phase lag index was used to estimate synchrony between brain areas. The minimum spanning tree was used to estimate topological metrics such as the leaf fraction (a measure of network integration) and the degree divergence (a measure of the resilience of the network aga

A minimally invasive neurostimulation method for controlling abnormal synchronisation in the neuronal activity.

Many collective phenomena in Nature emerge from the -partial- synchronisation of the units comprising a system. In the case of the brain, this self-organised process allows groups of neurons to fire in highly intricate partially synchronised patterns and eventually lead to high level cognitive outputs and control over the human body. However, when the synchronisation patterns are altered and hypersynchronisation occurs, undesirable effects can occur. This is particularly striking and well documented in the case of epileptic seizures and tremors in neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's

Coordinative task difficulty and behavioural errors are associated with increased long-range beta band synchronization.

The neural network and the task-dependence of (local) activity changes involved in bimanual coordination are well documented. However, much less is known about the functional connectivity within this neural network and its modulation according to manipulations of task complexity. Here, we assessed neural activity via high-density electroencephalography, focussing on changes of activity in the beta frequency band (~15-30Hz) across the motor network in 26 young adult participants (19-29 years old). We investigated how network connectivity was modulated with task difficulty and errors of performa

What graph theory actually tells us about resting state interictal MEG epileptic activity.

Graph theory provides a useful framework to study functional brain networks from neuroimaging data. In epilepsy research, recent findings suggest that it offers unique insight into the fingerprints of this pathology on brain dynamics. Most studies hitherto have focused on seizure activity during focal epilepsy, but less is known about functional epileptic brain networks during interictal activity in frontal focal and generalized epilepsy. Besides, it is not clear yet which measures are most suitable to characterize these networks. To address these issues, we recorded magnetoencephalographic (M

Inter-hemispheric desynchronization of the human MT+ during visually induced motion sickness.

Visually induced motion sickness (VIMS) is triggered in susceptible individuals by stationary viewing of moving visual scenes. VIMS is often preceded by an illusion of self-motion (vection) and/or by inappropriate optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) responses associated with increased activity in the human motion-sensitive middle temporal area (MT+). Neuroimaging studies have reported predominant right hemispheric activation in MT+ during both vection and OKN, suggesting that VIMS may result from desynchronization of activity between left and right MT+ cortices. However, this possibility has not been

The effects of neural synchronization and peripheral compression on the acoustic-reflex threshold.

This study investigates the acoustic reflex threshold (ART) dependency on stimulus phase utilizing low-level reflex audiometry [Neumann et al., Audiol. Neuro-Otol. 1, 359-369 (1996)]. The goal is to obtain optimal broadband stimuli for elicitation of the acoustic reflex and to obtain objective determinations of cochlear hearing loss. Three types of tone complexes with different phase characteristics were investigated: A stimulus that compensates for basilar-membrane dispersion, thus causing a large overall neural synchrony (basilar-membrane tone complex-BMTC), the temporally inversed stimulus

Inhibition by N omega-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester of the electrocortical arousal response in rats.

In rats chronically implanted with cannulae into one lateral cerebral ventricle and recording electrodes onto the fronto-parietal cortex, the effects of systemic or intraventricular administration of the nitric oxide (NO) synthesis inhibitor, N omega-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME), on electrocortical (ECoG) arousal response evoked by sound stimulation were studied. In control animals, a single acoustic stimulation (80 dB for 15 s) produced a significant decrease in ECoG total voltage power lasting approximately 25 s. No tolerance developed after repeating the same sound stimulation at

Afferent properties of periarcuate neurons in macaque monkeys. I. Somatosensory responses.

The afferent properties of single neurons of the periarcuate cortex have been studied in the macaque monkey. Most of the recorded neurons responded to stimuli in one or two sensory modalities and, accordingly, they were classified as somatosensory, visual or bimodal (visual and somatosensory) neurons. Visual neurons were located rostral to the arcuate sulcus, whereas the somatosensory and the bimodal neurons were found predominantly caudal to this sulcus. Somatosensory neurons (n = 102) and bimodal neurons (n = 69) had identical somatic afferent properties. They were subdivided into 'tactile'

Optic Neuritis and the Visual Pathway: Evaluation of Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum by Resting-State fMRI and Diffusion Tensor MRI.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Optic neuritis (ON) is an acute episode of inflammation in the visual pathway (VP). It may occur as part of a demyelinating disease, which can affect white matter (WM) throughout the VP. Compensatory cortical adaptations may occur following WM damage to maintain visual integrity. Our aim was to investigate whether resting-state functional MRI (rsfMRI) can detect cortical adaptations following ON attacks and to correlate rsfMRI with diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) of WM within the VP. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Neuromyelitis optica spectrum patients were compared to healthy

The effects of aging on the distribution and strength of correlated neural inputs to postural muscles during unperturbed bipedal stance.

The present study investigated the effects of aging on the distribution of common descending neural drives to main postural muscles acting on the ankle, knee, hip, and lower trunk. The presence, distribution, and strength of these drives were assessed using intermuscular coherence estimations at a low-frequency band (0-55 Hz). Ten healthy older adults (68.7 ± 3.5 years) with no recent history of falls and ten healthy younger adults (26.8 ± 2.7 years) performed bipedal stances with eyes either opened or closed. Electromyographic (EMG) signals of six postural muscles were recorded. Estimations o

Deficient Recurrent Cortical Processing in Congenital Deafness.

The influence of sensory experience on cortical feedforward and feedback interactions has rarely been studied in the auditory cortex. Previous work has documented a dystrophic effect of deafness in deep cortical layers, and a reduction of interareal couplings between primary and secondary auditory areas in congenital deafness which was particularly pronounced in the top-down direction (from the secondary to the primary area). In the present study, we directly quantified the functional interaction between superficial (supragranular, I to III) and deep (infragranular, V and VI) layers of feline'

Transmission through the dorsal spinocerebellar and spinoreticular tracts: wakefulness versus thiopental anesthesia.

BACKGROUND: Most of what is known regarding the actions of injectable barbiturate anesthetics on the activity of lumbar sensory neurons arises from experiments performed in acute animal preparations that are exposed to invasive surgery and neural depression caused by coadministered inhalational anesthetics. Other parameters such as cortical synchronization and motor ouflow are typically not monitored, and, therefore, anesthetic actions on multiple cellular systems have not been quantitatively compared. METHODS: The activities of antidromically identified dorsal spinocerebellar and spinoreticu

Emotions amplify speaker-listener neural alignment.

Individuals often align their emotional states during conversation. Here, we reveal how such emotional alignment is reflected in synchronization of brain activity across speakers and listeners. Two "speaker" subjects told emotional and neutral autobiographical stories while their hemodynamic brain activity was measured with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The stories were recorded and played back to 16 "listener" subjects during fMRI. After scanning, both speakers and listeners rated the moment-to-moment valence and arousal of the stories. Time-varying similarity of the blood-oxy

Effects of low-frequency burst stimulation of the motor thalamus on cortical neural co-firing.

BACKGROUND: Electrical stimulation targeting the motor thalamus (Mthal) represents an emerging strategy for regulating motor cortical activity patterns, however the fundamental mechanisms and optimal stimulation configurations are not well established. OBJECTIVE: To characterize how burst Mthal stimulation modulates cortical activity and to identify stimulation parameters that maximize cortical co-firing via thalamocortical rebound mechanisms. METHODS: We conducted acute electrophysiological experiments in anesthetized rats using Mthal stimulation with systematically manipulated burst stimul

Identification and analysis of reference-independent movement event-related desynchronization.

Characterization of the electroencephalography (EEG) signals related to motor activity, such as alpha- and beta-band motor event-related desynchronizations (ERDs), is essential for Brain Computer Interface (BCI) development. Determining the best electrode combination to detect the ERD is crucial for the success of the BCI. Considering that the EEG signals are bipolar, this involves the choice of the main and reference electrodes. So far, no strategy to guarantee signals free of the activity from the reference electrode has achieved consensus among the scientific community. Therefore, mapping t
