Alveolar echinococcosis (AE), caused by the metacestode of Echinococcus multilocularis, is emerging in both dogs and people in North America. Here, we review 27 cases of canine AE opportunistically reported since the index case was described in 2009 in Western Canada. We describe clinical presentation, diagnosis, treatment, outcome, and source of canine infection, based on genetics of the parasite isolated from some canine cases. Diagnosis of AE was by histopathology and/or PCR on DNA extracted from metacestodes. The median age of dogs at diagnosis was 4 years (range 1-12), which is low compar

BACKGROUND: Previous research has identified a significant relationship between companion animal abuse and child abuse, yet no study has explored the relationship between child abuse and intentional wildlife aggression outside of lawful hunting practices or agricultural contexts.
OBJECTIVE: The goals of this exploratory study were to examine prevalence rates of intentional killing or harming wildlife, the associations between wildlife aggression and child abuse perpetration (psychological, physical, and very severe physical child abuse), and if cruelty-related motives for harming or killing w

Postpartum pain encompasses a range of physical and emotional discomforts, often influenced by hormonal changes, physical recovery, and individual psychological states. The complex interactions between the variables can make it difficult for traditional diagnostic techniques to fully capture, creating inadequacies and inefficient management techniques. The aims to develop a comprehensive diagnostic and management framework for postpartum pain by integrating Natural Language Processing (NLP), electrophysiological data, and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) principles. The seeks to enhance the

Population-level surveys for Dirofilaria immitis in wild canids typically rely on identification of the parasite at necropsy. More recently, some studies have employed the use of the SNAP® 4Dx® Plus test. However, since the assay was designed for use with domestic dogs it needs to be validated for use with wild canids for accurate interpretation of results. We therefore evaluated the performance of the SNAP® 4Dx® Plus test for detection of D. immitis in wild canids in southern Ontario. Overall, 199 wild canid carcasses were collected from across the region and assessed for the presence of D. i

The objective of this study was to develop polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays for detection of Baylisascaris procyonis eggs and larvae in fecal, environmental, and tissue samples. We have optimized conventional and real-time PCR assays for B. procyonis using the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase 2 gene as the target for amplification. The lower limit of detection of the parasite genomic DNA was 10 pg in the conventional PCR and 100 fg in the real-time PCR. In both PCR assays, specific amplification of a 146 bp product was achieved with DNA extracted from a single in vitro hatched B. procyon

Since its emergence in 2019, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has infected a wide range of animal species, including wildlife. Although SARS-CoV-2 infection has been widely reported in wildlife, particularly in white-tailed deer (WTD; Odocoileus virginianus) across the United States, data on viral circulation in New England wildlife remain limited. Here, we investigated active SARS-CoV-2 infection and serological evidence of previous exposure in free-ranging wildlife from New England and Virginia. We examined samples from 1646 animals representing 29 wildlife specie

BACKGROUND: Strychnine is a highly toxic, plant-derived alkaloid. It has historically been used in western Canada as a rodenticide for control of Richardson's ground squirrels; and in Alberta, as a predacide against wolves, coyotes, black bears, and skunks. However, nontarget species poisonings with strychnine have been widely documented in Canada and elsewhere. Poisonings manifest as acute neuroexcitation and are usually fatal. In March 2023, strychnine was banned in Canada for control of Richardson's ground squirrels, with concerns over wildlife poisonings cited. However, fatal poisonings ha

An outbreak of 92 abortions out of 1,700 pregnant cows (5.41%) in a period of 3 weeks (19 May to 05 June 2019) occurred in a Georgia Dairy, USA, in cattle that were between 3 and 7 months of gestation. Two sets of samples (aborted fetuses' organs, placental tissues, aborted cows blood) were submitted for laboratory investigations at the Tifton Veterinary Diagnostic and Investigational Laboratory, College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Georgia (TVDIL, Tifton, GA, USA). An abortion panel testing for the major abortion-causing agents [e.g. Bovine Viral Diarrhoea Virus (BVDV), Infectious Bo

BACKGROUND: Environmental transmission of the zoonotic parasite Toxoplasma gondii, which is shed only by felids, poses risks to human and animal health in temperate and tropical ecosystems. Atypical T. gondii genotypes have been linked to severe disease in people and the threatened population of California sea otters. To investigate land-to-sea parasite transmission, we screened 373 carnivores (feral domestic cats, mountain lions, bobcats, foxes, and coyotes) for T. gondii infection and examined the distribution of genotypes in 85 infected animals sampled near the sea otter range.

Molecular point-of-care testing (POCT) platforms have demonstrated considerable utility in rapid and accurate influenza diagnostics. Among them, the Cepheid Xpert is widely used in clinical practice, while Coyote Flash10 and Genewise NAT-3000 were recently approved, with few performance data available. Performances of Flash10 and NAT-3000 were evaluated in parallel with the Xpert assay. The limits of detection (LoDs) were determined using serially diluted standard reference materials of inactivated influenza virus A and B (FluA/B). Clinical performance was assessed using 200 remnant nasopharyn

BACKGROUND: Hepatozoon spp. are apicomplexan parasites with a heteroxenous life cycles, involving vertebrate intermediate hosts and invertebrate definitive hosts. These parasites infect a wide variety of wild and domestic vertebrates causing subclinical infection or mild-to-severe clinical manifestations, depending on the parasite species and vertebrate host. Interestingly, each Hepatozoon spp. have a specific host range, suggesting a close host-parasite coevolutionary relationship.
METHODS: Hepatozoon sequences deposited between 2013 and 2023 were mined from GenBank to test which was the mos

Alveolar echinococcosis (AE) caused by Echinococcus multilocularis is a rare but serious animal and human disease in the northern hemisphere. We review published data and reports of E. multilocularis in animals and humans in Europe and North America since 2015. New findings in Europe include the first detection of AE in a wild canid (golden jackal, Canis aureus) and brown hare (Lepus europaeus); evidence for and against the role of domestic and wild felids as definitive hosts of E. multilocularis; new reports in wildlife in 2 countries and human AE in 8 countries; slow range expansion in Franc

Physaloptera rara (Spirurida: Physalopteridae) has been found in dogs, coyotes, raccoons, wolves, foxes, cats, and bobcats in North America. The parasites' developmental cycles involve insects, including beetles, cockroaches, and crickets, as intermediate hosts. The nematodes firmly attach to the wall of the stomach and duodenum, where they feed on the mucosa and suck blood. Frequent movement of these nematodes results in erosions and ulcers in the gastrointestinal tract. The present study reports the morphological features of adult P. rara using scanning electron microscopy. Adult worms were

Steps to facilitate inter-jurisdictional collaboration nationally and continentally have been critical for implementing and conducting coordinated wildlife rabies management programs that rely heavily on oral rabies vaccination (ORV). Formation of a national rabies management team has been pivotal for coordinated ORV programs in the United States of America. The signing of the North American Rabies Management Plan extended a collaborative framework for coordination of surveillance, control, and research in border areas among Canada, Mexico, and the US. Advances in enhanced surveillance have fa

OBJECTIVES: Mandatory reporting of potential rabies exposures and initiation of postexposure prophylaxis (PEP) allow local health authorities to monitor PEP administration for errors. Our objectives were to use an emergency department (ED) syndromic surveillance system to (1) estimate reporting compliance for exposure to rabies in suburban Cook County, Illinois, and (2) initiate interventions to improve reporting and reassess compliance.
METHODS: We queried ED records from 45 acute care hospitals in Cook County and surrounding areas from January 1, 2013, through June 30, 2015, for chief compl

Phylogenetic sister clades Bartonella and Brucella within the order Rhizobiales present some common biological characteristics as well as evident differences in adaptations to their mammalian reservoirs. We reviewed published data on Bartonella and Brucella infections in wild carnivores to compare the ecology of these bacteria in relatively similar host environments. Arthropod vectors are the main mechanism for Bartonella species transmission between mammalian hosts. The role of arthropods in transmission of Brucella remains disputed, however experimental studies and reported detection of Bruc

During 2005, 49 states and Puerto Rico reported 6,417 cases of rabies in nonhuman animals and 1 case in a human being to the CDC, representing a 6.2% decrease from the 6,836 cases in nonhuman animals and 8 cases in human beings reported in 2004. Approximately 92% of the cases were in wildlife, and 8% were in domestic animals. Relative contributions by the major animal groups were as follows: 2,534 raccoons (39.5%), 1,478 skunks (23%), 1,408 bats (21.9%), 376 foxes (5.9%), 269 cats (4.2%), 93 cattle (1.5%), and 76 dogs (1.2%).
