STAT6 expression and IL-13 production in association with goblet cell hyperplasia and worm expulsion of Gymnophalloides seoi from C57BL/6 mice.

In intestinal helminth infections, Th2 immune respones are generally associated with mucin secretion for worm expulsion from the host intestine. In particular, IL-4 and IL-13 are the important cytokines related with intestinal mucus production via STAT6 signalling in nematode infections. However, this perspective has never been studied in Gymnophalloides seoi infection. The present study aimed to observe the STAT6 signalling and cytokine responses in C57BL/6 mice, a mouse strain resistant to infection with this trematode. The results showed that worm expulsion occurred actively during days 1-2

Oyster hydrolysate attenuates osteoarthritis progression by modulating inflammatory signaling and extracellular matrix homeostasis.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic degenerative joint disease characterized by progressive cartilage destruction and persistent low-grade inflammation, in which extracellular matrix (ECM) homeostasis plays a pivotal role. Although oyster hydrolysate (OH), derived from Crassostrea gigas (Magallana gigas), is rich in bioactive peptides and has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, its effects on the pathogenesis of OA have not yet been studied. This study aimed to investigate the anti-inflammatory and chondroprotective effects of OH using in vitro and in vivo OA mode…

Occurrence of Microplastic Pollution at Oyster Reefs and Other Coastal Sites in the Mississippi Sound, USA: Impacts of Freshwater Inflows from Flooding.

Much of the seafood that humans consume comes from estuaries and coastal areas where microplastics (MPs) accumulate, due in part to continual input and degradation of plastic litter from rivers and runoff. As filter feeders, oysters (Crassostrea virginica) are especially vulnerable to MP pollution. In this study, we assessed MP pollution in water at oyster reefs along the Mississippi Gulf Coast when: (1) historic flooding of the Mississippi River caused the Bonnet Carré Spillway to remain open for a record period of time causing major freshwater intrusion to the area and deleterious impacts on…

Heavy metals in sediments, mussels and oysters from Trinidad and Venezuela.

The Gulf of Paria is bordered by both Trinidad and Venezuela, from which various metallic pollutants and other contaminants can originate. The Gulf is still a significant source of fish, crabs and shellfish for human consumption to both countries, where concerns over the quality of this marine environment have been long expressed but never properly addressed. In addition, the circulatory current patterns in the Gulf ensure that contaminants originating from either country are likely to affect both countries eventually. Heavy metals were determined in oysters (Crassostrea rhizophorae and C. vir…

Natural extract-derived compounds for the treatment of hematological diseases through modulation of the bone marrow microenvironment.

The bone marrow microenvironment comprises a complex network of hematopoietic stem cells, immune cells, stromal cells, and non-cellular components such as the extracellular matrix and soluble factors, collectively maintaining the homeostasis of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells. It is highly vulnerable to pathological perturbations induced by hematologic malignancies, solid tumors, inflammatory stress, and therapeutic exposure, which collectively destabilize microenvironmental homeostasis and promote hematopoietic failure, malignant progression, and immune dysregulation. YKL-40-A Protein in the Field of Translational Medicine: A Role as a Biomarker in Cancer Patients?

YKL-40 is a 40 kDa glycoprotein produced by cancer cells, inflammatory cells and stem cells. It probably has a role in cell proliferation and differentiation, inflammation, protection against apoptosis, stimulation of angiogenesis, and regulation of extracellular tissue remodelling. Plasma levels of YKL-40 are often elevated in patients with localized or advanced cancer compared to age-matched healthy subjects. Several studies have demonstrated that high plasma YKL-40 is an independent prognostic biomarker of short survival in patients with different types of cancer. However, there is not yet

The interrelationship between prostate cancer and osteoporosis: new perspectives on shared molecular pathways and treatment strategies.

Osteoporosis is frequently regarded as a complication associated with androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) in patients with prostate cancer. Nevertheless, a notably higher incidence of osteoporosis has been observed in prostate cancer patients even in the absence of ADT, when compared to age-matched healthy individuals. This phenomenon is likely attributable to the synergistic effects of aging, chronic inflammation, and tumor-related factors, which collectively contribute to accelerated bone loss in this population. Accumulating evidence has demonstrated that signaling pathways such as RANKL/RAN

Research progress on the anti-cancer mechanisms of edible salty-flavored Chinese materia medica.

Edible salty-flavored Chinese materia medica (ESCM) refers to a category of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) that also serve as food, characterized by their salty flavor. According to the TCM theory, ESCM can soften and disperse knots, thus potentially offering benefits for cancer prevention and treatment. With cancer remaining a major global health challenge, its primary prevention strategies, especially through dietary modification, are crucial. ESCM have recently garnered substantial attention, due to their remarkable clinical efficacy and low side-effect profile. Researches on ESCM demon

Nuclear receptors in health and disease: signaling pathways, biological functions and pharmaceutical interventions.

Nuclear receptors (NRs) are a large family of ligand-dependent transcription factors that regulate the expression of a wide range of target genes in response to endogenous and exogenous ligands, including steroid hormones, thyroid hormone, vitamin D, retinoic acid, fatty acids, and oxidative steroids. Upon ligand binding, nuclear receptors form dimer complexes with transcriptional cofactors, which interact with specific DNA sequences in the promoter or enhancer regions of target genes to modulate gene expression. This process plays a crucial role in many physiological processes such as reprodu
