A descriptive study of healthcare ethics consultants in Canada: results of a national survey.

As part of a project to examine health care ethics consultation in Canada, we surveyed individuals who were considered by themselves or others to play a significant role in health care ethics consultation. Since one goal of the project was to examine the education and abilities necessary for consultants, we sought to determine the qualifications and skills currently possessed by persons considered to be ethics consultants. For the purposes of the questionnaire, 'health care ethics consultation' was defined broadly to include consultation on ethical issues in clinical care or in clinical resear

Blazing Trails With Research: Paving the Way for Advanced Practice Providers.

INTRODUCTION: In September 2021, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) expanded the ability for advanced practice providers (APP) to practice more autonomously by being able to write orders for research-related anti-cancer therapy. OBJECTIVES: The goal was to align with NCI guidance to permit APPs to independently write non-Cycle 1 Day 1 study agent orders. METHODS: An academic institution created a process to comply with the NCI's memorandum. Health-system policy was updated to reflect this new capability. A tracking system was established to monitor NCI's Registration and Credentialing Roste

Chronic Maxillary Sinusitis Due to Material Compatible with Hyaluronic Filler-A Case Report.

Background: Chronic maxillary sinusitis is most often linked to dental, allergic, or anatomical etiologies, with foreign body-induced forms remaining rare. This case report describes a unique occurrence of chronic maxillary sinusitis resulting from misplaced hyaluronic filler due to a facial esthetic procedure. Case presentation: A 60-year-old woman experienced right-sided maxillary sinusitis symptoms for three years after hyaluronic filler injections. Multi-slice computed tomography showed total sinus opacification, a vermicular foreign body, and a small anterior wall perforation. The patient

Today's treatment of cholelithiasis: laparoscopic surgery.

The speed at which laparoscopic biliary tract surgery has been introduced to such a large number of surgeons is without precedent in modern surgical history. At least 4 factors work together to explain such a rapid success: 1) Laparoscopic cholecystectomy removes the diseased gallbladder and ensures permanent cure; 2) Laparoscopic approach allows a telescopic vision and dissections are very precise; 3) Laparoscopic cholecystectomy allows minimal wound pain with complete resolution within a few days, a short hospital stay and the ability of many patients to return to work within a week of opera

DYRK1A inhibition results in MYC and ERK activation rendering KMT2A-R acute lymphoblastic leukemia cells sensitive to BCL2 inhibition.

Unbiased kinome-wide CRISPR screening identified DYRK1A as a potential therapeutic target in KMT2A-rearranged (KMT2A-R) B-acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Mechanistically, we demonstrate that DYRK1A is regulated by the KMT2A fusion protein and affects cell proliferation by regulating MYC expression and ERK phosphorylation. We further observed that pharmacologic DYRK1A inhibition markedly reduced human KMT2A-R ALL cell proliferation in vitro and potently decreased leukemia proliferation in vivo in drug-treated patient-derived xenograft mouse models. DYRK1A inhibition induced expression of th

Human Autoantigen Atlas: Searching for the Hallmarks of Autoantigens.

Understanding autoimmunity to endogenous proteins is crucial in diagnosing and treating autoimmune diseases. In this work, we developed a user-friendly AAgAtlas portal (http://biokb.ncpsb.org.cn/aagatlas_portal/index.php#), which can be used to search for 8045 non-redundant autoantigens (AAgs) and 47 post-translationally modified AAgs against 1073 human diseases that are prioritized by a credential score developed by multisource evidence. Using AAgAtlas, the immunogenic properties of human AAgs was systematically elucidated according to their genetic, biophysical, cytological, expression profi

The fourth wave of the US opioid epidemic and its implications for the rural US: A federal perspective.

The current opioid epidemic in the United States has been characterized as having three waves: prescription opioid use, followed by heroin use, and then use of synthetic opioids (e.g., fentanyl), with early waves affecting a population that was younger, less predominantly male, and more likely to be Caucasian and rural than in past opioid epidemics. A variety of recent data suggest that we have entered a fourth wave which can be characterized as a stimulant/opioid epidemic, with mental illness co-morbidities being more evident than in the past. Stimulant use has introduced new complexities in

Connect, then lead.

In puzzling over whether it's better to be feared or loved as a leader, Machiavelli famously said that, because it's nigh impossible to do both, leaders should opt for fear. Research from Harvard Business School's Amy Cuddy and consultants Matthew Kohut and John Neffinger refutes that theory, arguing that leaders would do much better to begin with "love"--that is, to establish trust through warmth and understanding. Most leaders today approach their jobs by emphasizing competence, strength, and credentials. But without first building a foundation of trust, they run the risk of eliciting fear,

Training and certifying Physician Nutrition Specialists: the American Board of Physician Nutrition Specialists (ABPNS).

A significant obstacle to nutrition literacy among physicians is a paucity of Physician Nutrition Specialists (PNSs) on medical school faculties who can effectively advocate for change in medical school and residency curricula and who can serve as role models for incorporating nutrition into patient care. To address these issues, the Intersociety Professional Nutrition Education Consortium developed a paradigm for PNSs that is designed attract more physicians into the field; promulgated educational standards for fellowship training of PNSs; and established a unified mechanism for certifying PN

The development of orthopedic certification in the United States.

The development of medical education standards and state licensure requirements occurred simultaneously in the 1900s. The result was that annual state licensure became the physician's certification. Eventually, the explosion of scientific knowledge due to hospital-based clinical practices and stimulation from national societies led to specialization within medicine. Primary specialty boards were organized in the 1930s to issue credentials and define qualifications for specialists. Just as licensure became the certification of a physician, primary boards became the certification of a physician

Teachers' literacy-related knowledge and self-perceptions in relation to preparation and experience.

After rating their own literacy-related knowledge in three areas (knowledge about reading/reading development, phonemic awareness/phonics, and morpheme awareness/structural analysis), graduate teacher-education students completed five tasks intended to measure their actual disciplinary knowledge in these areas. Teachers with high levels of prior background (i.e., course preparation and experience) rated themselves as significantly more knowledgeable than did low-background teachers in all areas; high-background participants also significantly outperformed low-background participants on all tas

Community health worker certification as a pathway to workforce development and career advancement: a qualitative study.

Background: Community Health Workers (CHWs) play a vital role in bridging between healthcare systems and underserved communities. Although CHW certification has expanded across the United States, limited research has examined whether certification supports long-term career advancement and workforce development for CHWs themselves. This study examined how certified CHWs perceive the role of certification in shaping career trajectories and long-term workforce retention, with implications for CHW program design and public health workforce policy.
