Spice, vulnerability, and victimization: Synthetic cannabinoids and interpersonal crime victimization among homeless adults.

BACKGROUND: Although the physiologic and psychological harms associated with the use of synthetic cannabinoids, such as spice, are well-described, researchers have yet to examine how spice abuse affects exposure to crime. This paper describes the dangerous social environment where spice is used and delineates how synthetic cannabinoid abuse increases the risk of victimization. UNLABELLED: Methods: This qualitative study used semi-structured interviews to examine crime- and victimization-related experiences of 22 homeless adults. Transcripts were analyzed for emergent themes using a two-tiered

Sex Offender Mobility: An Application of Crime Pattern Theory Among Child Sex Offenders.

Sex offenders are a heterogeneous group and exhibit various offense patterns. Often the location where the offender committed the offense is different from where the offender encountered their victim. Applying crime pattern theory, this study sought to understand if the type of location, victim, and situational characteristics could predict whether an offender would commit the sexual offense in a different and more secluded location than where he first encountered the victim. Among a sample of 114 incarcerated sex offenders, the results showed that offenders who contacted their victims in loca

DIR-visible grey matter lesions and atrophy in multiple sclerosis: partners in crime?

BACKGROUND: The extent and clinical relevance of grey matter (GM) pathology in multiple sclerosis (MS) are increasingly recognised. GM pathology may present as focal lesions, which can be visualised using double inversion recovery (DIR) MRI, or as diffuse pathology, which can manifest as atrophy. It is, however, unclear whether the diffuse atrophy centres on focal lesions. This study aimed to determine if GM lesions and GM atrophy colocalise, and to assess their independent relationship with motor and cognitive deficits in MS. METHODS: Eighty people with MS and 30 healthy controls underwent b

Perceived danger and offending: exploring the links between violent victimization and street crime.

Perceptions of the danger of crime are typically discussed in the context of people's fear that they will be harmed by offenders. We shift the focus and examine the association between perceived danger and offending and the contribution of these perceptions to the well-established relationship between violent victimization and crime. We hypothesize that violence may embolden some victims and contribute to their perception that offending is not dangerous. We examine the mediating effects of these perceptions alongside two other potential links between violent victimization and crime: deviant de

Intrusive memories and ruminations related to violent crime among young offenders: phenomenological characteristics.

Very little is known about the nature of perpetrator's memories of violent crime. The authors conducted semistructured interviews with a representative sample of 105 young offenders convicted of serious violence, assessing intrusive memories, ruminations, and symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder related to their violent crime. Forty-eight (46%) participants described significant intrusive memories of the assault, and 38 (36%) reported ruminations related to the assault. Ethnic origin and historical variables explained 19% of the variance of posttraumatic stress disorder symptom severity;

Parenthood, gender, and turning points to crime for young people in Latin America.

In very different societal contexts, parenthood has been identified as a critical turning point in life course trajectories. In this qualitative study, we explore parenthood as a turning point for 40 young women and 40 young men in prisons across Latin America. We study the impact of parenthood on criminal trajectories, identify gender differences, and analyze the different mechanisms at work. The analysis distinguishes between positive (crime reducing) and negative (crime increasing) changes following parenthood. When participants felt that they had to change, "slow down" or obtain a more sta

Investigative interviews with individuals who perpetrated sex crimes: A scoping review.

Sex crimes (CS) are a global public health problem with profound negative consequences for victims, their families, and society. The perpetrator's testimony is crucial for case outcomes because sexual offenses are frequently underreported, often due to limited evidence and lack of victim testimonies. Therefore, perpetrator investigative interviews play a decisive role in criminal investigations. The aim of this scoping review is to identify and describe evidence-based investigative interview techniques for gathering testimony from SC perpetrators using a structured methodology. Studies were id

The Chestnut and the Imperfect Crime: A Case Report of Femicide and Staged Road Accident.

Introduction: Charred bodies represents a significant challenge for forensic pathologists due to the destructive effects of fire on human remains. Although most fire-related deaths are accidental, cases of suicide and homicide are not uncommon. Case Report: We report a peculiar case of a severely burned body discovered inside a torched vehicle. Under judicial investigation, a full autopsy was performed, including macroscopic and microscopic examination of key anatomical structures: the inspection of oral cavity revealed no soot deposits; a foreign object (a chestnut) was found anterior to the

Pattern of recurrence in endometrial cancer. The murderer always returns to the scene of the crime.

BACKGROUND: Endometrial cancer recurrence occurs in about 18 % of patients. This study aims to analyze the pattern recurrence of endometrial cancer and the relationship between the initial site of primary disease and the relapse site in patients undergoing surgical treatment. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed all surgically treated patients with endometrial cancer selecting those with recurrence. We defined primary site disease as uterus, lymph nodes, or peritoneum according to pathology analysis of the surgical specimen. The site of recurrence was defined as vaginal cuff, lymph nodes, per

Subcultural Representations of Perpetrators and Victims of Crime and Violence Associated with Mental Disorders.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: The beliefs and opinions of the general population are based substantially on mass media, which often equates mental disorders with violence and criminality. These stigmatising depictions contribute to the development and persistence of negative attitudes towards people with psychiatric conditions. The objective was to examine, through popular music, the subcultural representations of crime and violence in the context of mental disorders, focusing on depictions of victims and offenders. METHODS: Strategy of analysis: Content analysis of Spanish punk lyrics (1981-2

An exploration of the link between narcissism, masochism, and crime in a post-incarcerated sample.

This study examined the relationship between narcissism, masochism, and violent criminal justice involvement. Current interventions used with offender populations target traits such as antisocial personality but typically ignore narcissism and masochism. Understanding the connection between violent crime, narcissism, and masochism can help us develop a more indepth understanding of which personality features contribute to an increased proclivity towards criminal action. The participants (N = 494) were post-incarcerated individuals. To assess individuals' degree of narcissistic and masochistic

In and Out of "The Lifestyle": Theoretical Explanations for Female Offending and Desistance From Crime.

This qualitative study of theoretical frameworks was conducted to explain criminal offending and attitudes towards desistance from crime for a sample of 26 women reintegrating back into society after incarceration. Theoretical pathways and desistance theories were used to provide themes for analyzing in depth interviews, journal entries written by the study's participants, and halfway house records. Pathways and desistance perspectives suggest that gendered pathways can explain how women are led into criminal lifestyles, as well as how their criminality may come to an end. Distinct gender-spec

Airbnb and neighborhood crime: The incursion of tourists or the erosion of local social dynamics?

The proliferation of internet-based home-sharing platforms like Airbnb has raised heated debates, with many in the general public believing that the presence of Airbnb listings can lead to an increase in crime and disorder in residential neighborhoods. Despite the importance of this debate to residents, policymakers, and other stakeholders, few studies have examined the causal linkage between Airbnb listings and crime in neighborhoods. We conduct the first such empirical test in Boston neighborhoods, focusing on two potential mechanisms: (1) the inflow of tourists might generate or attract cri

Drug-facilitated sexual assault and other crimes: A systematic review by countries.

Drug-facilitated sexual assault (DFSA) and drug-facilitated crime (DFC) constitute a mode of violence that is generally unknown to the population and may go unnoticed by health professionals. The aim of this systematic review was to analyze the victims of DFC, compiling their sociodemographic characteristics, the toxic substances used and their biological matrices and modes of action, in order to identify the substances that are commonly put to criminal use. The aim would be to establish political and health strategies that inform and warn people about possible criminal social behaviors conseq
