Elevated CO₂ promotes the translocation and degradation of strobilurin fungicides in cucumber via coupled physiological and metabolic pathways.

Elevated atmospheric CO₂ is a prominent consequence of global climate change, which substantially alters plant physiological processes and further modulates the environmental fate of pesticides in agricultural ecosystems, thereby threatening agricultural product safety and ecological health. Nevertheless, the physiological and biochemical mechanisms underlying elevated CO₂-regulated uptake, translocation, and metabolism of fungicides in crop plants remain largely unclear. In the present study, cucumber seedlings were selected as the model plant, and integrated physiological detection, subcellu

Using aco multiple mutants to elucidate the differential regulation of ethylene in sex determination and fruit elongation in cucumber.

The determination of sex morphs and the optimization of fruit shape are key challenges in cucumber cultivation and breeding, with ethylene recognized as a crucial regulatory factor in both processes. Ethylene is synthesized through the coordinated actions of 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate (ACC) synthase (ACS) and ACC oxidase (ACO). While previous studies have highlighted the significant role of CsACSs in cucumber sex determination, investigations on CsACOs remain limited. In this study, we generated mutants of all members of the ACO gene family involved in ethylene synthesis during cucumber

Biodegradable bilayer active packaging with unidirectional release: PLA/ZnO/MgO outer layer and gelatin electrospun mat incorporating eugenol-thymol for cucumber preservation.

Fresh cucumbers are highly perishable due to moisture loss, microbial infection, and oxidative deterioration. In this study, a biodegradable bilayer active packaging film with unidirectional release was developed for cucumber preservation. The outer PLA layer was reinforced with 2 wt% of a 1:1 ZnO/MgO nanoparticle mixture, exhibiting enhanced hydrophobicity, mechanical strength (tensile strength 62.75 MPa), reduced water vapor permeability (88.7 g/m2·24 h), and excellent UV-blocking. The inner layer was prepared by electrospinning gelatin loaded with 0.2-0.4 wt% eugenol (EUG) and thymol (THY).

The Microtubule-Associated Protein CsTON2 Interacts With CsTRM5 and CsSUN to Regulate Fruit Shape Development in Cucumber.

Fruit shape is an important external quality trait that directly determines the market value. Modification of fruit shape has emerged as a key focus in crop improvement, but the regulatory network of fruit shape specifications remains largely unknown. Here, we identified a short fruit mutant (sf5) that was caused by a C-to-T single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in TONNEAU2 (CsTON2), a microtubule-associated gene encoding the B subunit of protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A). Overexpression of CsTON2 in the sf5 background partially rescued the mutant phenotype, while knockout of CsTON2 led to severe d

CsLCD and CsDCD are involved in nitric oxide-enhanced salt tolerance in cucumber seedlings.

Nitric oxide (NO) and hydrogen sulphide (H2S) play important roles in plant growth, development and environmental adaptation. Currently, there is few information on the mechanism by which H2S may be involved in NO-induced salt tolerance. In this study, cucumber was used to investigate the role of NO and H2S and their relationship under salt stress. The results showed that the H2S donor sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) and the NO donor sodium nitroprusside (SNP) significantly promoted the growth of cucumber seedlings under salt stress. However, hypotaurine (HT, an H2S scavenger) inhibited the positiv

Induction of gentisic acid 5-O-beta-D-xylopyranoside in tomato and cucumber plants infected by different pathogens.

Tomato plants infected with the citrus exocortis viroid exhibited strongly elevated levels of a compound identified as 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid (gentisic acid, GA) 5-O-beta-D-xylopyranoside. The compound accumulated early in leaves expressing mild symptoms from both citrus exocortis viroid-infected tomato, and prunus necrotic ringspot virus-infected cucumber plants, and progressively accumulated concomitant with symptom development. The work presented here demonstrates that GA, mainly associated with systemic infections in compatible plant-pathogen interactions [Bellés, J.M., Garro, R., Fayos

Genome-Wide Association and Genomic Prediction of Powdery Mildew and CYSDV Resistance in Melon.

Cucurbit powdery mildew (CPM) and Cucurbit yellow stunting disorder virus (CYSDV) are major constraints to sustainable melon (Cucumis melo L.) production worldwide. To elucidate the genetic basis of resistance and accelerate breeding, we integrated genome-wide association studies (GWASs), transcriptome validation, and genomic selection (GS) using a global panel of 341 melon accessions. Re-analysis of GWAS using BLINK and FarmCPU identified 18 and 19 marker-trait associations exceeding the exploratory threshold for CPM and CYSDV, respectively. Candidate gene analysis highlighted genes involved

Jasmonate regulates male sterility in cucumber.

Male sterility affects various agronomic traits. Although jasmonate (JA) has been shown to influence fertility in several plant species, most research on JA-mediated regulation of fertility has focused on bisexual flowers, leaving the role of this phytohormone in unisexual flowering plants largely unexplored. Cucumber (Cucumis sativus) has unisexual flowers and is an ideal model plant for studying male and female gametophyte development. In this study, we determined that JA regulates male and female flower development as well as male fertility in cucumber. In the JA biosynthesis-deficient muta

Bacillus subtilis B21-Mediated Salt Tolerance in Cucumber via Auxin Signalling Activation.

Soil salinization is a major constraint on global crop productivity. While certain plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) improve plant survival under salt stress, their underlying molecular mechanisms remain largely uncharacterised. In this study, a highly halotolerant PGPR strain, Bacillus subtilis B21, was isolated from saline - alkali soils in Ningxia, China, and investigated its mechanism of action in cucumber (Cucumis sativus). Inoculation with B21 significantly promoted root growth, re-established ion and reactive oxygen species (ROS) homoeostasis, and alleviated osmotic stress und

The power of magnesium: unlocking the potential for increased yield, quality, and stress tolerance of horticultural crops.

Magnesium (Mg2+) is pivotal for the vitality, yield, and quality of horticultural crops. Central to plant physiology, Mg2+ powers photosynthesis as an integral component of chlorophyll, bolstering growth and biomass accumulation. Beyond basic growth, it critically affects crop quality factors, from chlorophyll synthesis to taste, texture, and shelf life. However, Mg2 + deficiency can cripple yields and impede plant development. Magnesium Transporters (MGTs) orchestrate Mg2+ dynamics, with notable variations observed in horticultural species such as Cucumis sativus, Citrullus lanatus, and Citru

The PSI-NDH supercomplex prevents chilling-induced PSI photoinhibition.

Chilling stress induces photosystem I (PSI) photoinhibition in cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.). This process is associated with insufficient activity of the chloroplast NADH dehydrogenase-like complex (NDH). However, whether the importance of NDH can be generalized to other species and how NDH function is impaired remain unclear. We first examined whether NDH is essential for PSI protection under chilling stress using an NDH-deficient rice (Oryza sativa L.) mutant. The NDH-deficient rice exhibited pronounced PSI photoinhibition under chilling stress. By contrast, rice expressing flavodiiron prot

Agricultural potential and safety assessment of biochar obtained from river biomass.

Biochar, a carbon-rich residue produced by controlled biomass decomposition in oxygen-deprived conditions, like pyrolysis or gasification, has gained attention as a soil enhancer for improving fertility and sequestering carbon. In this study, we analyzed a biochar produced from woody and herbaceous biomasses resulting from river cleaning operations. The potential impacts of biochar on fauna and flora were evaluated through tests on two soil invertebrates (Folsomia candida and Eisenia fetida/E. andrei) and several agricultural plant species. Toxicological assessments included the Ames test usin

Meloside A Protects Dermal Papilla Cells from DHT-Induced Damage via Androgen Receptor Modulation.

Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is associated with dihydrotestosterone (DHT)-induced apoptosis in human dermal papilla cells (HDPCs) via androgen receptor (AR) upregulation. This study aimed to evaluate the potential of Cucumis melo var. makuwa leaf extract (CLE) to attenuate these DHT-mediated effects in HDPCs. HDPCs were treated with CLE, and DHT-induced apoptosis and AR expression were assessed. High-performance liquid chromatography coupled with electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-ESI-MS) identified Meloside A as the principal bioactive constituent within CLE.
