De Barsy syndrome is an autosomal recessive condition characterized by an progeroid appearance with distinctive facial features and cutis laxa. Ophthalmological, orthopedic, and neurological anomalies are generally also present. This syndrome is rare and the complex therapeutic management, from a surgical but also rehabilitative point of view, has not been recognized. The aim of this paper is to describe a possible rehabilitative protocol, after an orthopedic surgical treatment, in a child with De Barsy Syndrome. A 6-year-old boy was born with a congenital bilateral hip dysplasia associated wi

Patients with chronic forms of blepharochalasis often develop eyelid deformities characterized by blepharoptosis and prolapse of the orbital fat and lacrimal gland. Some individuals have an acquired form of blepharophimosis, secondary to the dehiscence of the canthal tendons. In this late stage of the condition, the tendons still adhere to the periosteum of the orbital rims and loss of fixation occurs at the distal attachment between the tendons and the eyelid tissues. This results in a horizontally shortened palpebral fissure and a rounded deformity of the lateral canthal angle. Surgery remai

A 19-year-old Moroccan male was found to have total absence of serum alpha1-antitrypsin, a major inhibitor of elastase. This patient had chronic obstructive lung disease, hyperextensibility of the skin over the cheeks and wrists, and hyperlaxity of the hand joints. Microscopic sections of the skin revealed a thickened dermis with shortened and rarefied elastic fibers. Ultrastructural study showed collagen fibers with variable and irregular diameters. Elastic fibers were scarce and their relatively poor matrix was surrounded by numberous microfibrils. The outline of the fibers was irregular wit

The disorder comprising Macrocephaly, Alopecia, Cutis laxa, and Scoliosis has been designated MACS syndrome. It is a rare condition, inherited in an autosomal recessive pattern. Three families from different ethnic origins have so far been reported and were all linked to homozygous mutations in RIN2, a gene encoding the Ras and Rab interactor 2 protein involved in cell trafficking. We describe herein the fourth family with MACS syndrome in two siblings carrying a novel homozygous mutation, c.1878_1879insC in exon 8 of the RIN2 gene, which predicts p.Ile627Hisfs*7. We also report on additional

Over the last decade, a considerable amount of new information has emerged describing the protein components of elastic fibers. It is now evident that elastic fibers are complex extracellular matrix polymers, composed of at least 19 different proteins that comprise both the microfibrillar and the amorphous components of elastic fibers. Mutations in three of the genes encoding the most abundant of these elastic fiber proteins result in a broad spectrum of elastic tissue phenotypes, ranging from skeletal and skin abnormalities to vascular and ocular defects. The following disorders will be discu

Herein, we describe a sporadic case of recessive type 2 pseudoxanthoma elasticum. A 26-year-old woman without family history presented with cutis laxa-like marked wrinkling involving the whole-body and a serpiginous streak on the upper left arm. She denied any other systemic problems related to difficulty with visual acuity or vascular disease. A skin biopsy specimen from the loose skin showed the accumulation of calcified degenerated elastic fibers and foci of ossification in the dermis. Histopathological study from a serpiginous streak revealed mineralized debris that was eliminated through

The authors report on the 7th case of "de novo" 7p trisomy [46,XY,dup (7) (p15-pter)], followed during 6-and-a-half years. Through literature review, examination of pictures and dermatoglyphics, they try to contribute to the further definition of this multiple congenital anomaly syndrome. This entity, although several lengths of duplicated fragment or mosaicism, is characterized by high and large forehead flattened at the centre due to the abnormally large and persistent gaping anterior fontanel and sagittal (metopic sutures, consequent hypertelorism and broad nasal bridge, cutis laxa, often d

A bizarre syndrome has hitherto masqueraded as leprechaunism, and although it is a quite different disorder it has been used as the prototype of leprechaunism in some birth defects atlases. It is proposed that this condition is designated the Patterson syndrome and details of a second case are reported. The features of this connective tissue and neuroendocrine disorder include bronzed hyperpigmentation, cutis laxa of the hands and feet, bodily disproportion, severe mental retardation, and major bony deformities. Radiographs revealed a unique and gross generalised skeletal dysplasia, unlikely t

Anetoderma is a rare, benign disorder characterized microscopically by the pan-dermal loss of elastic fibers in the dermis and presenting clinically as circumscribed, skin-colored or grey-white atrophic macules and/or patches on the trunk and/or extremities. Lesions are described as having a "sac-like" appearance, since they bulge or herniate upon palpation. Although the clinical picture is characteristic, a definitive diagnosis requires histological confirmation in order to differentiate this disorder from other conditions of elastolysis, such as cutis laxa and mid-dermal elastolysis. We report two exceedingly unusual and severe cases of Marfan syndrome with neonatal manifestations. Clinical features were caricatural. The skin was of the cutis laxa type. Both infants died shortly after birth as a result of severe cardiovascular lesions. Histologic examination of the aortic media confirmed the diagnosis. Because this genetic connective tissue dysplasia is inherited on an autosomal dominant basis with strong penetrance, and because in both instances the two parents had a negative family history, a dominant mutation seems likely in our cases and prompted us to be optimistic wh

Leprechaunism is a very rare condition of obscure aetiology. At the age of three weeks the neonate described in this report lost all subcutaneous fat in spite of additional parenteral nutrition. He acquired purulent pneumonia, and finally died of septicaemia. The typical stigmata were a prominent nose, broad mouth with putty lips, and large, hypertrophic , backwards rotated ears, cutis laxa, atrophy of adipose tissue and gynaecomastia with hirsutism. Since the first report (1948), 32 patients have been described in detail. Compared with these reports of dysendocrinism we observed an excessive

Elastic fibers are extracellular macromolecules that provide resilience and elastic recoil to elastic tissues and organs in vertebrates. They are composed of an elastin core surrounded by a mantle of fibrillin-rich microfibrils and are essentially produced during a relatively short period around birth in mammals. Thus, elastic fibers have to resist many physical, chemical, and enzymatic constraints occurring throughout their lives, and their high stability can be attributed to the elastin protein. Various pathologies, called elastinopathies, are linked to an elastin deficiency, such as non-syn

Lipomatous hypertrophy of the interatrial septum (LHIS) is a benign cardiac mass determined by abnormal deposition of adipose tissue in the interatrial septum. The quantitative relationship between LHIS and visceral adiposity has not been explored to date.In this retrospective study, three groups of consecutive patients undergoing CT imaging were enrolled: L + with LHIS, L- without LHIS, and LO- without both LHIS and history of malignancies. Areas of total adipose tissue (TAT), visceral adipose tissue (VAT), subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) and LHIS areas were calculated on CT images. The rel

Lenz-Majewski hyperostotic dwarfism (LMHD) is a rare condition characterized by intellectual disability, sclerosing bone dysplasia, dysmorphic facial features, brachydactyly, symphalangism and cutis laxa. Nineteen cases have been reported in the literature so far, eleven of them with PTDSS1 mutations. Although studies have had clinically similar findings, in some cases the authors have reported even rarer features such as hydrocephalus, facial paralysis, and cleft palate. We, hereby, report the case of the first patient with Lenz-Majewski syndrome (LMS) with molecular confirmation from Turkey.

The authors describe a patient who presented from birth on a severe involvement of connective tissues with pathological fractures, lack of auricular cartilage, hyperlaxity of fingers and cutis laxa with deep folds, all suggestive of derangements of collagen and elastin. Hypothermia at 24 hours of age should have already indicated the possibility of Menkes' syndrome. From the 3rd month on, the patient presents a neurological deterioration and a myoclonic epilepsy which is resistant to treatment. Craniocerebral tomodensitometry revealed, with time, a cerebral atrophy and subdural hematomas. Angi
