BACKGROUND: In adults 80% to 90% of cystic lesions in the pancreas are pseudocysts and the remainder are mostly neoplastic cysts. To choose optimal treatment for an individual patient, exact nonoperative diagnosis would be preferable. This study was done to assess the value of cyst fluid analysis, compared with clinical and radiologic findings, in the differential diagnosis of pancreatic cystic lesions.

We report a case of paragonimiasis diagnosed by fine-needle aspiration of a breast mass in a middle-aged Korean female with a history of breast silicone injections. The biochemical characteristics and smears of the fluids in M-OME, S-OME, AOM, POMC, and AMS were studied. The fluids in S-OME and POMC had the character of transudate rather than exudate. On the other hand, M-OME, AOM, and AMS showed a more exudative or secretive nature. The character of the product from the inflammatory process of the specific condition was particularly seen in M-OME, AOM, and AMS. Thus we speculate that the chronic inflammatory process has a close relationship to the pathogenesis of OME, especially in mucoid types.

Renal tubular epithelia ordinarily absorb NaCl and water, although recent evidence indicates that renal cysts secrete fluid. Intrasplenic immunization with ovarian tumour derived cyst fluids was used to generate monoclonal antibodies (Mabs) against human ovarian carcinomas. In breast cyst fluid obtained from 50 patients age (47.1 +/- 2.3) sodium, potassium, oestrone (E1), oestradiol (E2) androgens, progesterone, (P) and Epidermal Growth Factor--EGF were determined.
