Retrograde ureteral access after Cohen reimplantation can be difficult. Previously described percutaneous techniques used small caliber suprapubic needles or antegrade access. We describe a percutaneous suprapubic access using the Veress needle, which was inserted into the bladder superolateral to the target ureteral orifice under cystoscopic guidance. Ureteral catheters for retrograde studies and double J stents could be directly inserted into the ureter through the Veress needle sheath under cystoscopic and fluoroscopic guidance. The technique is simple and quick and was used by us successfu

PURPOSE: To introduce the use of the 20F rigid hysteroscope in urologic procedures.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The 20F hysteroscope was used to remove deeply embedded foreign bodies from the lower urinary tract of three patients in whom previous attempts with standard cystoscopic equipment were unsuccessful.
RESULTS: In all three cases, the hysteroscope easily passed into the urethra and with the use of rigid instruments was able to remove the foreign bodies without complication.
CONCLUSION: Situations may arise when the removal of embedded foreign bodies is not possible with standard cystoscop

BACKGROUND: Bladder diverticula are herniations of bladder urothelium and mucosa through the muscularis propria. The reported incidence of neoplasia arising in bladder diverticula is widely variable. The authors' objective was to study the characteristics and sensitivity of urine cytology in these patients with emphasis on primary intradiverticular bladder cancer (IDBC).
METHODS: A 17-year, retrospective review of all resected bladder diverticula associated with bladder carcinoma was performed. Cases that had complete diverticular resections and preresection urine samples were included in thi

CASE DESCRIPTION: An 8-year-old spayed female Yorkshire Terrier-Poodle dog was evaluated for persistent pollakiuria and stranguria following routine cystotomy for calcium oxalate cystoliths.
CLINICAL FINDINGS: The dog presented for a cystotomy with intermittent hematuria. Postoperative radiographs revealed no remaining cystoliths. Urine, cystolith, and bladder mucosal aerobic cultures were negative. Pollakiuria, stranguria, and hematuria developed immediately after surgery and persisted despite antibiotics. Ultrasound revealed suspected fibrous adhesions within the urinary bladder lumen conne

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the preclinical and clinical performance of the pivoting lens rigid Endocameleon (ECAM) endoscope in white light cystoscopy (WLC).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Preclinical evaluation was performed ex vivo in CT-based, anatomically accurate and validated bladder phantoms. Six defined tasks with objective endpoints were compared between ECAM-WLC and rigid WLC (30° view angle, rWLC) in 30 interventions. Subsequently, the comparison was transferred to in vivo n = 21 interventions. A validated usability score (System Usability Scale, SUS) as well as physician and patient-related o

PRACTICAL RELEVANCE: Diagnostic and therapeutic cystourethroscopy has become very popular in the diagnosis and treatment of canine lower and upper urinary tract disease in the past 5-7 years. As expertise is expanding, the use of similar techniques in feline patients is growing.
OUTLINE: This is a brief overview of the indications, equipment needed and procedure for performing cystourethroscopy in feline patients. The principal focus is normal feline lower urinary tract anatomy. Some examples of abnormalities that might be seen are also provided, and therapeutic cystourethroscopy is touched u

Flexible carbon dioxide cystoscopy has been carried out in 65 patients using an Olympus BF type 1 TR endoscope (usually used for bronchoscopy). Good views were obtained and comparison with standard cystoscopy confirmed that no lesions were missed. The procedure was well tolerated under local anaesthesia. The flexible cystoscope was particularly useful in examining patients with diverticula, anterior bladder neck lesions or the post-radiation fibrotic pelvis.

The investigation of women with SUI the Serbian urologist traditionally begins with cystoscopy to reduced risk of bladder tumor. There is no doubt regarding its ability to detect bladder cancer presented with characteristic symptoms or pathologic results of urinalyses. We discuss its routine use in patients presenting with symptomatology of SUI. The retrospective study was performed in order to evaluate clinical justifiability and cost/benefit ratio of routine cystoscopy in women with stress urinary incontinence (SUI) whose were surgically treated. We reviewed records of 95 female, mean age 56

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether increased hydrostatic pressure by simple manual compression ("bag squeeze") of the irrigation solution bag (500 mL of 0.9% saline) during passage of the flexible cystoscope will reduce patient discomfort.
METHODS: A total of 151 male patients undergoing diagnostic and review flexible cystoscopies were randomized to "squeeze" (n = 72) or "no squeeze" (n = 79) as the cystoscope was passed from below the external sphincter until after the bladder neck was negotiated. All patients had received 10 mL of 2% lidocaine gel beforehand. A 10-point visual analog pain sca

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer is often associated with malignant ureteral obstruction and consequent hydronephrosis. Hydronephrosis caused in this way can be resolved by placing ureteral stents or performing a percutaneous nephrostomy. Complications that may occur during the retrograde ureteral stent placement are usually mild, but serious complications such as stent migration into the cardiovascular system are also possible. Here we present an unusual case where a ureteral stent entered the abdominal aorta during the cystoscopic ureteral stenting, which was resolved by a cystoscopic stent remov

We report a case of bladder hemangioma in a child. An 8-year-old girl was referred to our hospital for the evaluation of painless hematuria. Neither pyuria nor bacteriuria was detected. She had no dysuria. Intravenous pyelography showed deformity of the bladder without dilation of the upper urinary tract. Voiding cystourethrography revealed a filling defect of the bladder. Reddish blue masses were seen cystoscopically at the right wall and the dome of the bladder. Partial cystectomy was performed. From the histological findings, the diagnosis was cavernous hemangioma of the urinary bladder. He

We describe a case of multiorgan failure after intravesical bacillus Carmette-Guern (BCG) immunotherapy for bladder cancer. A 58-year-old man with superficial transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder was initially treated by transurethral resection and intravenous chemotherapy, and then administered 11 sessions of BCG intravesically. He was administered BCG intravesically after cystoscopic examination. The next day he complained of nausea and malaise. He became hypotensive. The symptom progressed with multiorgan failure, disseminated intravascular coagulation and respiratory failure. The pat

Objective: To investigate the relationship between the compliance of bladder cancer patients with cystoscopic follow-up and the treatment protocol, and their health literacy. Methods: Patients who underwent transurethral resection surgery for bladder tumor were found to have non-muscular invasive bladder carcinoma on pathology examination and then underwent cystoscopic follow-up for 1 year or more were included in the study. Cystoscopic follow-up was recommended to the low- and high-risk groups in terms of progression and recurrence. The patients were evaluated with the Health Literacy Survey-

BACKGROUND: Interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome (IC/PBS) is a spectrum of pelvic, bladder or urethral pain, as well as irritative voiding symptoms. The term interstitial cystitis (IC) is reserved for patients with typical cystoscopic features. Diagnosis and management of this syndrome may be difficult. The aim of this study was to describe endoscopic features and our experience on the treatment of this syndrome in Urodifem de Occidente S.C., a private urogynecology unit.
METHODS: Observational, retrospective analytic study of 25 treated patients from 33 with diagnosis of IC/PBS bet

We noted recently that the injection of cells with a needle through a cystoscope in the urethral sphincter muscle of pigs failed to deposit them nearby or at the intended target position in about 50% of all animals investigated (n > 100). Increasing the chance for precise cell injection by shotgun approaches employing several circumferential injections into the sphincter muscle bears the risk of tissue injury. In this study, we developed and tested a novel needle-free technique to precisely inject cells in the urethral sphincter tissue, or other tissues, using a water-jet system. This system w

The results of 350 cystoscopic studies, are presented. In 85.7%, urinary incontinence was present, and in 72% one or more of the following symptoms were present: urgency, dysuria, urinary frequency, vesical tenesmus and nycturia. The following were analyzed: age, parity, uroculture and its relation to cystoscopic findings. Most of the patients (64.5%) were 40 to 60 years old, 54% had seven or more deliveries. Most frequent diagnoses were: urethritis alone or with trigonitis (66.8%) and urethral stenosis (meatus) in 31.4%. Uroculture was done in 96% and it was positive in 20% and negative 76%.
