Emergency Department Patient Burden from an Electronic Dance Music Festival.

BACKGROUND: Electronic dance music (EDM) festivals are increasingly common and psychoactive substance use is prevalent. Although prehospital care can obviate the transfer of many attendees to health care facilities (HCFs), little is known regarding the emergency department (ED) burden of patients presenting from EDM festivals. OBJECTIVES: This study describes the patient volume, length of stay (LOS), and presenting complaints of patients from a 3-day EDM festival in close proximity to an area ED. METHODS: Medical charts of patients presenting to one HCF from an EDM festival were reviewed for

Injuries in a Professional Ballet Dance Company: A 10-year Retrospective Study.

Ballet dancers are high-performance athletes who are particularly susceptible to a wide variety of musculoskeletal injuries. However, they are relatively understudied, and data on their injury rates are lacking. This retrospective study features the largest aggregate data on professional ballet dancers to date and aims to identify the most common diagnoses and areas of injury in this unique population to better direct preventative and clinical practices. The study encompassed a 10-year period from January 2000 to December 2010 of dancers from a single company. Data regarding the dancers' age,

Extreme rituals in a BDSM context: the physiological and psychological effects of the 'Dance of Souls'.

Participation in extreme rituals (e.g., fire-walking, body-piercing) has been documented throughout history. Motivations for such physically intense activities include religious devotion, sensation-seeking and social bonding. The present study aims to explore an extreme ritual within the context of bondage/discipline, dominance/submission and sadism/masochism (BDSM): the 'Dance of Souls', a 160-person ritual involving temporary piercings with weights or hooks attached and dancing to music provided by drummers. Through hormonal assays, behavioural observations and questionnaires administered be

"Filarial dance sign" real-time ultrasound diagnosis of filarial oophoritis.

Filariasis is a parasitic disease caused by Filarial nematodes (Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi, and Brugia timori) that commonly causes lymphatic obstruction resulting in edema and increase in the size of the affected organ. Filariasis is diagnosed by identifying microfilariae on Giemsa stain. The immunochromatographic card test is diagnostic. Ultrasound is the imaging modality of choice for detecting adult filarial worms/microfilaria in the lymphatic system, which are responsible for the classic "filarial dance sign" caused by twirling movements of the microfilariae. © 2016 Wiley Periodi

Intermediate filaments and vesicular membrane traffic: the odd couple's first dance?

During the last two decades, much attention has been focused on the regulation of membrane traffic by the actin and microtubule cytoskeletal networks. Their dynamic and polarized behavior and associated motors provide a logical framework from which architectural and movement cues can be communicated to organelles. The study of these cytoskeletal systems has been greatly aided by pharmacological agents. In contrast, intermediate filaments (IFs) have largely been neglected as a potential player in membrane traffic, both because a comprehensive pharmacology to perturb them does not exist and beca

'How can we know the dancer from the dance?': hyperbole in hysteria.

In this paper the author discusses histrionic or hyperbolic behaviour, which she regards as specific to a certain type of hysterical character. Histrionic hysteria she sees as a pathological organisation. With the use of two clinical examples she examines the phenomenon of hyperbole or exaggeration and suggests that they convey a picture of the patient's internal objects and his relationship to them. Exaggeration can also be used by the patient to distance himself from what is going on in his mind and yet to make the object--the analyst in the session--aware of unrecognised emotions. To study

Mood after various brief exercise and sport modes: aerobics, hip-hop dancing, ice skating, and body conditioning.

To investigate the potential psychological benefits of brief exercise and sport activities on positive mood alterations, 45 Korean high school and 232 undergraduate students enrolled in physical education and stress management classes voluntarily participated and were randomly assigned to one of four activities: aerobic exercise, body conditioning, hip-hop dancing, and ice skating. Mood changes from before to after exercise (2 pm to 3 pm) were measured based on a Korean translation of the Subjective Exercise Experiences Scale. The findings suggested that the aerobics and hip-hop dancing groups

Effect of Ballroom Dancing on the Physical, Psychological, and Mental Well-Being of Oncological Patients: A Pilot Study.

PURPOSE: Previous studies have shown that dancing can improve well-being, but few studies have looked at ballroom dancing. The present pilot study focuses on ballroom dancing and aims to investigate its effect on the physical, psychological, and mental well-being of cancer patients. Owing to COVID-19, face-to-face courses had to be replaced by online courses to continue the intervention and maintain learning progress; after the end of the pandemic, the courses could occur on site again when possible. METHODS: For this cohort study, a total of 51 participants (38 patients and 12 healthy partne

A Pilot Study Comparing Speech Characteristics in People With Parkinson's Disease and Controls Dancing Weekly Over 5-Years.

INTRODUCTION: Parkinson's Disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that affects motor and non-motor functions. Speech impairments, such as reduced variability in pitch (F0SD) and intensity (IntSD), are commonly observed. Early identification of these changes through voice biomarkers offers a noninvasive approach for detecting PD, tracking disease progression, and investigating the effects of interventions on this population. This study investigates the impact of dance on people with PD voice features over a five-year period and explores whether dance interventions can mitigate these impair
