Using phantom variables in structural equation modeling to assess model sensitivity to external misspecification.

External misspecification, the omission of key variables from a structural model, can fundamentally alter the inferences one makes without such variables present. This article presents 2 strategies for dealing with omitted variables, the first a fixed parameter approach incorporating the omitted variable into the model as a phantom variable where all associated parameter values are fixed, and the other a random parameter approach specifying prior distributions for all of the phantom variable's associated parameter values under a Bayesian framework. The logic and implementation of these methods

Improving causal inference with a doubly robust estimator that combines propensity score stratification and weighting.

RATIONALE, AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: When a randomized controlled trial is not feasible, health researchers typically use observational data and rely on statistical methods to adjust for confounding when estimating treatment effects. These methods generally fall into 3 categories: (1) estimators based on a model for the outcome using conventional regression adjustment; (2) weighted estimators based on the propensity score (ie, a model for the treatment assignment); and (3) "doubly robust" (DR) estimators that model both the outcome and propensity score within the same framework. In this paper, we i

A semiparametric mixture cure survival model for left-truncated and right-censored data.

In follow-up studies, the disease event time can be subject to left truncation and right censoring. Furthermore, medical advancements have made it possible for patients to be cured of certain types of diseases. In this article, we consider a semiparametric mixture cure model for the regression analysis of left-truncated and right-censored data. The model combines a logistic regression for the probability of event occurrence with the class of transformation models for the time of occurrence. We investigate two techniques for estimating model parameters. The first approach is based on martingale

Fixed effects analysis of repeated measures data.

The analysis of repeated measures or panel data allows control of some of the biases which plague other observational studies, particularly unmeasured confounding. When this bias is suspected, and the research question is: 'Does a change in an exposure cause a change in the outcome?', a fixed effects approach can reduce the impact of confounding by time-invariant factors, such as the unmeasured characteristics of individuals. Epidemiologists familiar with using mixed models may initially presume that specifying a random effect (intercept) for every individual in the study is an appropriate met

Regression analysis for cumulative incidence probability under competing risks and left-truncated sampling.

The cumulative incidence function provides intuitive summary information about competing risks data. Via a mixture decomposition of this function, Chang and Wang (Statist. Sinca 19:391-408, 2009) study how covariates affect the cumulative incidence probability of a particular failure type at a chosen time point. Without specifying the corresponding failure time distribution, they proposed two estimators and derived their large sample properties. The first estimator utilized the technique of weighting to adjust for the censoring bias, and can be considered as an extension of Fine's method (J R

[Multilevel modelling applied to the analysis of diary data of obese patients with and without binge eating disorder].

Fitting multilevel models to diary data allows the analysis of development trends, group differences, and breakpoints in time trends. The aim of this study is the application of multilevel modelling to determine time trends in the diary data of a group of obese patients with and without binge eating disorder (BED). Throughout the course of a four-month multi-modal intervention program, the patients answered questions daily on handheld computers about their eating behaviour as well as their psychological and physical states. Multilevel analysis of the diary data shows that initially the trend o

The use of parametric vs. nonparametric tests in the statistical evaluation of rating scales.

In psychiatric studies, treatment efficacy is usually measured by rating scales. These scales have ordinal (rank) level and the statistical evaluation of the scale scores should be performed with nonparametric rather than parametric tests. In recent years, nonparametric statistical procedures for repeated measures have been developed for the evaluation of clinical trials in psychiatry. To assess the frequency of application of nonparametric tests in psychiatric trials, an analysis was performed on all treatment studies with panic disorder patients (DSM-III/III-R) that could be traced in the li

Estimating exposure using kriging: a simulation study.

Retrospective studies of disease often are limited by the resolution of the exposure measurements. For example, in a typical study of adverse health effects from contaminated groundwater, the number of wells sampled may range from only a few to as many as several dozen, while the number of cases and controls may be in the hundreds or more. To derive individual estimates of exposure for wells that were not sampled, investigators must extrapolate. In this study, we compare three methods of extrapolating from a limited number of observations to estimate individual exposures. Using two naive model

Factor-augmented transformation models for interval-censored failure time data.

Interval-censored failure time data frequently arise in various scientific studies where each subject experiences periodical examinations for the occurrence of the failure event of interest, and the failure time is only known to lie in a specific time interval. In addition, collected data may include multiple observed variables with a certain degree of correlation, leading to severe multicollinearity issues. This work proposes a factor-augmented transformation model to analyze interval-censored failure time data while reducing model dimensionality and avoiding multicollinearity elicited by mul

A minimum distance estimation approach to the two-sample location-scale problem.

As reported by Kalbfleisch and Prentice (1980), the generalized Wilcoxon test fails to detect a difference between the lifetime distributions of the male and female mice died from Thymic Leukemia. This failure is a result of the test's inability to detect a distributional difference when a location shift and a scale change exist simultaneously. In this article, we propose an estimator based on the minimization of an average distance between two independent quantile processes under a location-scale model. Large sample inference on the proposed estimator, with possible right-censorship, is discu

Sensitivity analysis for missing dichotomous outcome data in multi-visit randomized clinical trial with randomization-based covariance adjustment.

Dichotomous endpoints in clinical trials have only two possible outcomes, either directly or via categorization of an ordinal or continuous observation. It is common to have missing data for one or more visits during a multi-visit study. This paper presents a closed form method for sensitivity analysis of a randomized multi-visit clinical trial that possibly has missing not at random (MNAR) dichotomous data. Counts of missing data are redistributed to the favorable and unfavorable outcomes mathematically to address possibly informative missing data. Adjusted proportion estimates and their clos

From raw data to meaningful information: a robust but flexible method to assess in vitro assay responses-lessons learned from a novel Dicentrarchus labrax estrogen screen test.

Statistical analysis of in vitro assay data is a critical step towards a good interpretation of biological responses. However, it is still frequently undermined due to inappropriate statistical procedures, misinterpretation, insufficient statistical power-often resulting from small sample sizes-or poorly defined methodologies, in case of standardized tests. In line with practices commonly adopted in clinical studies and more recently in biomonitoring research, the use of thresholds for interpreting results may improve the robustness of conclusions. This work presents the application of a metho

[Interpretation of effect measures in clinical research: A practical guide for the clinician].

Modern medical practice faces an ever-growing volume of information that demands accurate statistical interpretation to guide clinical decision-making. Effect measures are essential tools for quantifying the true magnitude of an intervention and assessing its clinical impact. However, limited understanding of these measures among healthcare professionals often hinders the effective translation of evidence into everyday practice. This article's objective is to provide a clear and didactic overview of the principal effect measures used in clinical research, emphasizing their relevance to evidenc

Standards for analyzing astigmatic outcomes: Part II: Recommended statistical methods.

Surgically induced astigmatism (SIA) is the astigmatic component of the surgically induced refractive change. Vector prediction error (PE) is the key expression for evaluating refractive surgery, defined as the vector difference between the postoperatively observed refractive astigmatism and the refractive astigmatism predicted from the preoperative measurements. Astigmatic analysis of the SIA and PE includes both univariate and bivariate analyses. The magnitude of the refractive astigmatism is a predictor of visual function and a valuable component of astigmatic reporting. For vector metrics

Comparing single and multiple imputation strategies for harmonizing substance use data across HIV-related cohort studies.

BACKGROUND: Although standardized measures to assess substance use are available, most studies use variations of these measures making it challenging to harmonize data across studies. The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of different strategies to impute missing substance use data that may result as part of data harmonization procedures. METHODS: We used self-reported substance use data collected between August 2014 and June 2019 from 528 participants with 2,389 study visits in a cohort study of substance use and HIV. We selected a low (heroin), medium (methamphetamine), and

A GLM-based latent variable ordination method for microbiome samples.

Distance-based ordination methods, such as principal coordinates analysis (PCoA), are widely used in the analysis of microbiome data. However, these methods are prone to pose a potential risk of misinterpretation about the compositional difference in samples across different populations if there is a difference in dispersion effects. Accounting for high sparsity and overdispersion of microbiome data, we propose a GLM-based Ordination Method for Microbiome Samples (GOMMS) in this article. This method uses a zero-inflated quasi-Poisson (ZIQP) latent factor model. An EM algorithm based on the qua

A new R package and web application for detecting bilateral asymmetry in parasitic infections.

When parasites invade paired structures of their host non-randomly, the resulting asymmetry may have both pathological and ecological significance. To facilitate the detection and visualisation of asymmetric infections we have developed a free software tool, Analysis of Symmetry of Parasitic Infections (ASPI). This tool has been implemented as an R package (https://cran.r-project.org/package=aspi) and a web application (https://wayland.shinyapps.io/aspi). ASPI can detect both consistent bias towards one side, and inconsistent bias in which the left side is favoured in some hosts and the right

A primer on network meta-analysis with emphasis on mental health.

OBJECTIVE: A quantitative synthesis of evidence via standard pair-wise meta-analysis lies on the top of the hierarchy for evaluating the relative effectiveness or safety between two interventions. In most healthcare problems, however, there is a plethora of competing interventions. Network meta-analysis allows to rank competing interventions and evaluate their relative effectiveness even if they have not been compared in an individual trial. The aim of this paper is to explain and discuss the main features of this statistical technique. METHODS: We present the key assumptions underlying netwo
