Exercises following anterior cruciate ligament reconstructive surgery: biomechanical considerations and efficacy of current approaches.

To enable a safe, effective return to daily functional activities and to prevent premature knee joint osteoarthritis, adults undergoing anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) surgery require carefully designed and appropriate rehabilitation strategies. In this article we critically examine the contemporary body of literature concerning the application and outcomes of various knee exercise rehabilitation protocols described in the literature in the context of the surgically repaired ACL injured knee. These data were obtained from the MEDLINE (1991-2007), CINAHL (1982-2007), and SPORTS DISCUS (1975-20

Interrelationship between Vitamin D and Calcium in Obesity and Its Comorbid Conditions.

Obesity has been linked to vitamin D (VD) deficiency and low calcium (CAL) status. In the last decade, dietary supplementation of vitamin D and calcium (VD-CAL) have been extensively studied in animal experiments and human studies. However, the physiological mechanisms remain unknown as to whether the VD-CAL axis improves homeostasis and reduces biomarkers in regulating obesity and other metabolic diseases directly or indirectly. This review sought to investigate their connections. This topic was examined in scientific databases such as Web of Science, Scopus, and PubMed from 2011 to 2021, and

Screening Adolescents for Sensitive Health Topics in Primary Care: A Scoping Review.

We sought to aggregate common barriers and facilitators to screening adolescents for sensitive health topics (e.g., depression, chlamydia) in primary care, as well as those that are unique to a given health topic. We conducted a literature search of three databases (PsycInfo, MEDLINE, and CINAHL) and reference lists of included articles. Studies focused on barriers and facilitators to screening adolescents (ages 12-17 years) for sensitive health topics in primary care that are recommended by national guidelines. Articles were peer-reviewed, presented empirical data, and were published in Engli

Reward pathways in Parkinson's disease: clinical and theoretical implications.

AIMS: The mesolimbic and mesocortical circuits are particularly involved in reward-related behavior in humans. Because these systems may be in some way altered in Parkinson's disease (PD), it is likely that some psychiatric manifestations of PD, such as hedonistic homeostatic dysregulation and pathological gambling, as well as impulsive decision making, may be ascribed to their involvement. The aim of the current article was to review recent literature on this topic in order to analyze whether these disturbances share a common ground and whether actual theoretical frameworks on addiction prove

Possible association between PM2.5 and neurodegenerative diseases: A systematic review.

Air pollution is one of the most serious environmental problems that afflict our planet and one of the greatest risk factors for human health. In particular, PM2.5 is able to cross the blood-alveolar and blood-brain barriers, thus increasing the onset of respiratory, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases. Neurodegenerative disease is a progressive neuronal dysfunction that leads to neuronal lesions in both structure and function, and includes several diseases such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), vascular dementia (VaD), multiple sclerosis (MS), and others. Evidence based review of perioral dermatitis therapy.

Perioral dermatitis presents as an eruption of erythematous papules, pustules and papulovesicles, most frequently seen in young women. Oral tetracyclines have been considered the first line treatment for years. However, recent publications have found newer agents to be efficacious. The authors performed a review of the available data in order to determine the strength of evidence supporting published therapies. A Pubmed and Cochrane Library database search for all cases, case series, and clinical trials dealing with the treatment of perioral dermatitis in English. Most cases of perioral dermat

Vestibular rehabilitation exercises programs to improve the postural control, balance and gait of children with sensorineural hearing loss: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have demonstrated that children with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) exhibit postural instabilities, as well as balance and gait disorders, due to the vestibular dysfunction that they are prone to display as a consequence of inner ear injury. Thus, some experiments have proposed vestibular rehabilitation exercises programs as a treatment to improve these motor skills in children with SNHL. OBJECTIVE: Assess the evidence quality of the trials that used vestibular rehabilitation exercises programs to improve the postural control, balance and gait of children with S

Searching chiropractic literature: a comparison of three computerized databases.

PURPOSE: To determine the efficiency of three computerized bibliographic databases in retrieving literature relevant to the chiropractor. METHODS: A cross-sectional design was used. English-language citations from 1990-92, on the topics of scoliosis, sciatica and neck pain, were searched in CHIROLARS, Index to Chiropractic Literature (ICL) and MEDLINE. Citations were assessed for relevance criteria by two assessors; a third assessor was used when both were unsure of relevance. Inter- and intraexaminer reliability of the relevance assessments was determined using the weighted Kappa statistic.

Melanoma Radiological Surveillance: A Review of Current Evidence and Clinical Challenges.

Melanoma is a common cancer in both young and older populations in many western countries. Rates of melanoma diagnosis worldwide are increasing. With the introduction of both targeted and immunotherapies there have been dramatic improvements in the care of patients with metastatic melanoma. With these new therapies being increasingly offered to patients with stage III metastatic melanoma and stage IV disease, radiological surveillance of melanoma has become a widely used method of monitoring melanoma patients for early locoregional and distant metastasis. However, concerns have been raised abo
