The Journal of bone and joint surgery. American volume1994eng
We reviewed the clinical results for thirty patients (thirty-two feet) who had had exploration and decompression of the posterior tibial nerve for the treatment of tarsal tunnel syndrome between 1982 and 1990. The average duration of follow-up was thirty-one months (range, twenty-four to 118 months). Most of the patients were female, and the average age was forty-seven years (range, thirteen to seventy-two years). Over-all, only fourteen (44 percent) of the thirty-two feet benefited markedly from the operative procedure (a good or excellent result). Of the five patients (five feet) who were co

We describe our experience with total craniospinal decompression along the entire neuraxis, extending from the brain stem to the cauda equina, in seven patients with achondroplasia. These patients presented with clinically significant compression at multiple levels. In these patients, there were focal areas of complete myelographic block, typically at the cervicothoracic or thoracolumbar junction, as well as diffuse narrowing of the entire spinal subarachnoid space. In some, there were further complications of basilar impression, Arnold-Chiari malformation, or syringomyelia. Total craniospinal

Fifty-six cases of Bell's palsy that were examined and diagnosed with neuro-otologic and electrodiagnostic methods were treated with facial nerve decompression. Transmastoid posterior tympanotomy decompression of the facial nerve from the geniculate ganglion to the stylomastoid foramen was performed. The operative results of the 56 cases were as follows: satisfactory 23, fair 30 and moderate 3 respectively. 3 cases of mild high frequency hearing loss and 2 cases of eardrum perforation were found during follow-up. Factors correlated with curative effect, indication and precautions of operation

To monitor the effect of open carpal tunnel decompression on grip strength in the hand, a prospective study was made of 25 patients undergoing a total of 31 operations. Hand grip, key pinch and pulp-to-pulp pinch strengths were measured pre-operatively and at regular intervals until 1 year following operation. At that time there was no significant difference in the hand grip and pulp-to-pulp pinch strengths compared to their pre-operative values, but the key pinch in females showed a marginally significant reduction (P = 0.04) compared to the pre-operative value.

Arthroscopy : the journal of arthroscopic & related surgery : official publication of the Arthroscopy Association of North America and the International Arthroscopy Association1992eng
Arthroscopic subacromial decompression has become a popular technique supplanting the open Neer acromioplasty in many instances of chronic rotator cuff disease. A review of 61 consecutive decompressions with a minimum follow-up of 12 months was undertaken to evaluate preoperative criteria and surgical outcomes. Of the 61 patients, 53 patients with an average follow-up of 23 months were available for review. Thirty-four men and 19 women with an average age of 47 years comprised the study group. Eleven (21%) had full-thickness tears, 35 (66%) had partial-thickness injuries, and 7 (13%) had norma

Decompression disorders can occur after a reduction in environmental pressure due to dissolved gases forming bubbles in affected tissues. The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of tear film bubble formation as an indicator of decompression. Eleven subjects were exposed to a simulated dive to 30.48 m (100 ft) (in sea water) for 15 min. There was a significant (p < 0.001) increase in tear film bubble formation post-dive. This noninvasive technique may be of value in both research and clinical environments for monitoring decompression.

In brief: Sport scuba diving in inland bodies of water has gained in popularity, and travelers to remote areas can fly home soon after a diving trip. Thus it is not unusual to see a case of decompression sickness in an emergency care facility, regardless of its location. Symptoms of decompression sickness may occur minutes or hours after diving with compressed gas. They include marked fatigue, pruritic mottled skin lesions, pain (joints, back, abdomen), weakness or paralysis of isolated or regional muscle groups, paresthesia, urinary retention, loss of anal sphincter control, dyspnea, coughing

The relationships between drowning occurring in divers using compressed air, with subsequent recovery of the body to the surface, and the finding of intravascular gas bubbles at autopsy were studied. Guinea pigs were exposed to compressed air in a hyperbaric chamber at various depths [98, 294, and 392 kPa (1,3, and 4 atm)] for various intervals and then drowned at depth. Various decompression schedules were used in returning the drowned animals to the surface. Autopsy examination indicated that large and small intravascular gas bubbles may be found, in the absence of traumatic air embolism or

AIMS: The aim of this study was to compare outcomes of combined fusion and decompression with decompression alone in patients with lumbar degenerative sponylolisthesis. Traditional cost-effectiveness analysis was avoided due to the prospective nature of the two groups of patients.
METHODS: A cost-consequence analysis using prospective, multicentred, observational cohort data from the Canadian Spine Outcomes and Research Network database was performed from a limited societal perspective. The patients' out-of-pocket expenses were estimated from diaries. Institutional costs were estimated from c

OBJECTIVE: The most advocated surgical technique to treat symptoms of isthmic spondylolisthesis is decompression with instrumented fusion. A less-invasive classical approach has also been reported, which consists of decompression only. In this study the authors compared the clinical outcomes of decompression only with those of decompression with instrumented fusion in patients with isthmic spondylolisthesis.
METHODS: Eighty-four patients with lumbar radiculopathy or neurogenic claudication secondary to low-grade isthmic spondylolisthesis were randomly assigned to decompression only (n = 43) o

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to review relevant studies in order to determine the efficacy of decompression with fusion versus decompression in the treatment of lumbar spinal stenosis.
METHODS: Using appropriate keywords, we identified relevant studies using PubMed, the Cochrane library, and Embase. Key pertinent sources in the literature were also reviewed, and all articles published through October 2019 were considered for inclusion. For each study, we used odds ratios, mean difference (MD), and 95% confidence interval (95% CI) to assess and synthesize outcomes.
RESULTS: We found

STUDY DESIGN: Technical report and case illustration.
OBJECTIVE: To review the rationale and steps for a sublaminar decompression in the setting of adult deformity surgery and in degenerative spondylosis.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Several variations of lumbar laminotomy and posterior decompressions have been reported, although these are primarily in the setting of isolated lumbar stenosis, and often focus on treatment of central stenosis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Our operative technique is illustrated and 1 patient with a 1-year follow-up is presented to further describe this surgical appro

BACKGROUND: The management of lumbar synovial cysts (LSC) has been a controversial topic for many years. Whereas many authors label LSC as markers of instability and thus necessitating fusion, others suggest that decompression alone without fusion is a viable initial treatment option. Our objective was to clarify outcomes in patients undergoing decompression alone and decompression with fusion for symptomatic LSC and identify factors for cyst recurrence.
METHODS: A retrospective case series was performed of all patients undergoing initial treatment for LSC at a single institution ranging from

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous endoscopic decompression (PED) is considered a minimally invasive and safe procedure in lumbar degenerative disease. Few authors report the success of PED for thoracic spinal stenosis (TSS) with thoracic myelopathy. The objective of this study was to compare the outcome of PED versus posterior decompressive laminectomy (PDL) for TSS.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 30 consecutive patients who underwent surgery for single-level TSS from January 1, 2015 to May 1, 2019.These patients were divided into PED (n = 16) and PDL(n = 14) group. Preoperative demographic char

Besides evacuation of epidural or subdural hematoma, early decompressive craniectomy with duraplasty has to be performed in the neurotraumatological care of patients with moderate [Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score 9-12 points] or severe traumatic brain injury (TBI; GCS score </=8 points) and threatening herniation. The efficacy of secondary decompressive craniectomy and duraplasty after primary trepanation is under debate due to missing evidence of improved outcome. The objectives of this study were to register the incidence of increasing brain edema after isolated TBI and primary craniectomy, t

BACKGROUND: There is limited literature regarding radiological outcomes in the use of interlaminar devices as an adjunct to decompression compared to decompression alone (DA) for symptomatic lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS). This study aims to assess and compare 5-year radiological outcomes following spinal decompression and decompression with ILD (D + ILD).
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of prospectively collected data of 94 patients who underwent spinal decompression with or without ILD insertion between 2007-2015. Patients with symptomatic LSS who met the study criteria were offe

BACKGROUND: Two of the most commonly used techniques for treatment of lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) include full-endoscopic interlaminar decompression (MIS) and conventional microsurgical decompression (CD). Although these procedures have proven efficacy for relief of stenotic symptoms, in this age of increased concerns for healthcare cost, weighing the respective accumulative costs is essential for deciding which approach to adopt. The aim of this study is to perform a cost analysis comparison between MIS and CD for LSS.
METHODS: A decision analysis model comparing MIS and CD for patients wit
