[The supply of wild ruminants with major and trace elements. 2. The manganese content of winter grazing and the manganese status of red deer, fallow deer, roes and mouflons].

The winter grazing of wild ruminants on mantles of slate waste in the Harz mountains and in Gera county were richest in Mn whereas those on mantles of granite waste in the Erzgebirge were poorest. The flora of the shell-limestone, keuper and loess areas contains much less Mn than that of those acid habitats. The Mn-requirement of the wild ruminants grazing in the forests is met however, since bilberry plants (2,080 mg/kg), spruce twigs (984 mg/kg), spruce bark (827 mg/kg), oak twigs (791 mg/kg) and heather (754 mg/kg dry matter) in addition to many other plant species store extremely high amou

Whole-genome sequences of Odocoileus hemionus deer adenovirus isolates from deer, moose and elk are highly conserved and support a new species in the genus Atadenovirus.

We present the first complete genome sequence of Odocoileus hemionus deer adenovirus 1 (OdAdV-1). This virus can cause sporadic haemorrhagic disease in cervids, although epizootics with high mortality have occurred in California. OdAdV-1 has been placed in the genus Atadenovirus, based on partial hexon, pVIII and fibre genes. Ten field isolates recovered from naturally infected mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus), white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginiana) and moose (Alces alces) from Wyoming, black-tailed deer (Odocoileus hemionus columbianus) from California, and Rocky Mountain elk (Cervus elaphu

Prevalence of the Lyme disease spirochete, Borrelia burgdorferi, in deer ticks (Ixodes dammini) collected from white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in Saint Croix State Park, Minnesota.

During a special two-day hunt (11, 12 November 1989) in Saint Croix State Park, Minnesota (USA), one side of the neck for each of 146 white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) was examined for ticks. Of the 5,442 ticks collected, 90% (4,893) were the winter tick, Dermacentor albipictus, and 10% (549) were the deer tick, Ixodes dammini, the primary vector of the causative agent of Lyme disease, Borrelia burgdorferi. Adult males had the greatest frequency of infestation of either D. albipictus (100%) or I. dammini (88%) and had on average more ticks, compared to other deer. Based on an examinat

Deer tick virus genotypes are perpetuated by different modes of transmission.

Deer tick virus (DTV), or lineage II Powassan virus, is an emergent tick-borne encephalitis virus in North America. Survivors frequently sustain neurologic sequelae. Nationally reported cases have been increasing. DTV is thought to be maintained in nature by multiple modes including horizontal transmission (from viremic host to tick), cofeeding transmission (between ticks feeding nearby) and by transovarial transmission (female to progeny). Analysis of the relative importance of each mode has been hindered by low enzootic transmission. In 2021, Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts experienced an e

Prevalence and characterization of Cryptosporidium in sika deer from Northern China.

Cryptosporidium spp. are important zoonotic parasites that can cause moderate to severe diarrhea in humans and animals. However, the epidemiological data of Cryptosporidium in sika deer in China need to be updated. In this study, a total of 466 fecal samples were collected from sika deer in Shandong, Jilin, Liaoning, and Heilongjiang provinces. Nested PCR was used to amplify the SSU rRNA gene to detect Cryptosporidium spp. The results showed that the overall infection rate of Cryptosporidium spp. was 14.81%, with no significant differences among regions (p = 0.05). The highest infection rate w

Possibility of Vertical Transmission of Sarcocystis spp. in Sika Deer in Japan.

In recent years, the wild deer population in Japan has grown exponentially, causing severe feeding damage to the agricultural and forestry industries. Therefore, the game meat industry is being promoted for effective utilization of hunted animals. Wild animals are not hygienically controlled and can serve as reservoirs for pathogenic microorganisms. However, epidemiological information on wild animals in Japan remains insufficient. Recently, food poisoning-like cases have occurred because of raw venison infection with Sarcocystis spp. As the prevalence of Sarcocystis spp. in sika deer is very

Protective Effect of Deer Heart Peptide on Cardiac Injury in Mice.

Peptides are widely used as natural bio-small molecules because of their various pharmacological activities such as enhancing immunity, promoting wound healing, and improving inflammation. Alcoholic heart injury has become one of the major health problems worldwide, and alcohol consumption is now the main cause of alcoholic cardiomyopathy. In this study, deer heart peptides were extracted from deer hearts by enzymatic digestion and the antioxidant activity of deer heart peptides extracted at different times was evaluated by three in vitro antioxidant methods, and the active peptide with the be

Molecular Detection and Genotyping of Theileria spp. in Deer (Cervidae) in Korea.

Major clinical symptoms of Theileria infection include fever, anemia, anorexia, jaundice, and decreased milk production. Although several studies have been conducted on tick-borne pathogens, including Theileria in Korea, only a few have focused on Theileria infection in deer, including the Korean water deer. Blood samples from 160 deer were collected and subjected to DNA extraction and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Next, PCR-positive samples were sequenced and analyzed by constructing a phylogenetic tree. The results showed that the overall infection rate of Theileria was 8.1% (13/160). Inf

Prevalence and predictors of vector-borne pathogens in Dutch roe deer.

BACKGROUND: The main objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of nine vector-borne pathogens or pathogen genera in roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) in the Netherlands, and to identify which host variables predict vector-borne pathogen presence in roe deer. The host variables examined were the four host factors 'age category', 'sex', 'nutritional condition' and 'health status', as well as 'roe deer density'. METHODS: From December 2009 to September 2010, blood samples of 461 roe deer were collected and analysed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the presence of genetic materia

Calcinosis in a roe deer fawn (Capreolus capreolus) in northern Germany.

BACKGROUND: Calcinosis has been reported for a broad range of different animals. Causes for calcinosis include metabolic disorders due to kidney failure, intoxication with calcinogenic plants, or iatrogenic overdose of vitamin D. Especially young animals seem to be very susceptible to developing calcinosis. Currently, however, there is a lack of information on calcinosis in wildlife. CASE PRESENTATION: The following case report describes a roe deer fawn admitted to a clinic due to general weakness and myiasis. Plasma levels for creatinine, urea and phosphate were highly elevated, whereas the

Nutrition as an etiological factor causing diseases in endangered huemul deer.

OBJECTIVES: Distinct diseases prevent endangered huemul deer (Hippocamelus bisulcus) recovery. Fundamental etiological factors include nutriments, a mayor component of habitat quality. Undernutrition affects growth, skeletal development, osteopathology, reproduction and immunocompetence: this paper amplifies data corroborating micro-nutrient deficiencies among huemul. RESULTS: In Argentina, 57% huemul cadavers exhibited osteopathology, with new cases reported here. Recently, 86% live huemul had osteopathology: cranial lesions involved antemortem tooth loss, reducing feeding efficiency and bod

Resistance of colostrum-deprived domestic lambs to infection with deer adenovirus.

Seven colostrum-deprived, 3-4-wk-old Rambouillet-Hampshire lambs were inoculated via the mucous membranes with deer adenovirus (DAdV) and monitored for clinical signs for 21 d post-inoculation at which time animals were euthanized and postmortem examinations were performed. Pre-inoculation and post-inoculation serum samples were tested for antibodies to DAdV, ovine adenovirus 7, bovine adenovirus 7, and goat adenovirus 1. Evidence for DAdV infection was determined by virus isolation, PCR tests, and histopathology with immunohistochemistry tests for DAdV. No clinical signs or lesions consistent

Insights into the Bidirectional Properties of the Sheep-Deer Prion Transmission Barrier.

The large chronic wasting disease (CWD)-affected cervid population in the USA and Canada, and the risk of the disease being transmitted to humans through intermediate species, is a highly worrying issue that is still poorly understood. In this case, recombinant protein misfolding cyclic amplification was used to determine, in vitro, the relevance of each individual amino acid on cross-species prion transmission. Others and we have found that the β2-α2 loop is a key modulator of transmission barriers between species and markedly influences infection by sheep scrapie, bovine spongiform encephalo

Prevalence of Leptospira spp. in the kidneys of wild boars and deer in Japan.

We surveyed the prevalence of Leptospira spp. from 2005 to 2008 in wild boars and deer in Japan using polymerase chain reaction. Leptospiral flaB was detected in the kidneys of wild boars (positive ratio, 15.2%; 22 of 145) from 9 prefectures and a deer (1.1%; 1 of 94) from 1 prefecture in Japan. There was no annual change in the prevalence of positive animals during the investigation period (chi-squared test, p=0.94) or in the prevalence in male and female wild boars in the 2007 to 2008 season (Fisher's exact test, P=0.45). The Leptospira species harbored by these animals were deduced to be L.

A paretic condition in an Anaplasma phagocytophilum infected roe deer calf.

This paper describes a case of Anaplasma phagocytophilum infection in a roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) calf in Norway. The calf was found deserted, paretic, and heavily infested with Ixodes ricinus ticks. It was euthanized and investigated postmortem. Anaplasma phagocytophilum was detected in several tissues by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and 16S rRNA sequence analyses. Analyses for Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato and tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus infections were negative. This is the first report of a possible paretic condition in A. phagocytophilum infected roe deer.
