Shedding oral mucosa.

Four patients presented with asymptomatic gray-white oral mucosal tissues that sloughed and peeled away leaving a normal tissue base. This peeling phenomenon appeared unlike any known oral mucosal disease, although it somewhat resembled leukoedema and chemically irritated oral mucosa due to certain dentifrices and mouthwashes. Examination of biopsy tissue from three of the four cases along with stripped tissue from the fourth case revealed an intraepithelial cleft near the surface of each specimen. The linear cleft ran parallel to the epithelial surface. Foci of adjacent cells displayed intrac

Desorption of acquired enamel pellicle in vivo by pyrophosphate.

Soluble pyrophosphate (PP) has been introduced in dentifrices to inhibit the formation of dental calculus. The mechanism of inhibition is probably an adsorption of the pyrophosphate ions to the Ca-sites on the enamel surfaces and a blocking of the active sites for crystal growth. It has been shown in a recently published study that PP reduced the protein adsorption to hydroxyapatite (HA) in vitro and also inhibited the pellicle formation in vivo. The aim of the present study was to examine the desorption potential of pyrophosphate on the acquired enamel pellicle in vivo. Enamel fragments were

The role of caffeinated beverages in dental fluorosis.

Recent studies have demonstrated that the incidence of dental fluorosis has increased during the past decade. Greater availability and use of fluoride-containing gels, mouth rinses, dentifrices, etc., improper prescribing of fluoride supplements and ingestion of fluoride dentifrice by some children are some of the suggested determinants of dental fluorosis. However, based on the increase in consumption of tea, coffee, and other caffeine-containing beverages by the children, and the augmentative effect of caffeine on fluoride bioavailability, we theorize that the rise in incidence of dental flu

Efficacy of a triclosan formula in controlling early subgingival biofilm formation: a randomized trial.

The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of rinses with slurries of a dentifrice containing triclosan (TCS), as compared with rinses with slurries from a control dentifrice, in controlling early subgingival biofilm formation. A double-blind, randomized and cross-over clinical trial was designed, and 26 dental students were included. In the first period, participants were randomized to rinse with a TCS slurry or a control slurry, in a 12 h interval, and to refrain from mechanical cleaning. A Plaque Free Zone Index was assessed at 24 h, 48 h, 72 h and 96 h. After a washout period of 1

Is there an acceptable surrogate for caries clinical trials? Evidence from a systematic review of primary studies.

BACKGROUND: There is currently a lack of evidence supporting the use of valid surrogates in caries clinical trials. This study aimed at examining the validity of two surrogate outcomes used in randomized clinical trials for caries prevention, pit and fissure sealants and fluoridated dentifrices, according to the Prentice criteria. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted in MEDLINE (PubMed), LILACS and Scopus databases up to 05 October 2022. The grey literature and the list of eligible studies' references were also screened. The search was conducted, selecting randomized clinical trials foc

A Combination of Zinc and Arginine Disrupt the Mechanical Integrity of Dental Biofilms.

Mechanical cleaning remains the standard of care for maintaining oral hygiene. However, mechanical cleaning is often augmented with active therapeutics that further promote oral health. A dentifrice, consisting of the "Dual Zinc plus Arginine" (DZA) technology, was found to be effective at controlling bacteria using in vitro laboratory studies, translating to clinical efficacy to deliver plaque and gingivitis reduction benefits. Here, we used biophysical analyses and confocal laser scanning microscopy to understand how a DZA dentifrice impacted the mechanical properties of dental plaque biofil

Seasonal variation in fluoride intake: the Iowa fluoride study.

OBJECTIVES: Although patterns of fluid intake change seasonally, little is known about how fluoride intake varies by season. Since even short-term increases in fluoride intake could potentially lead to more dental fluorosis, it is valuable to assess the degree of seasonal variation to determine if it increases fluoride intake to levels that could be considered a concern in young children. METHODS: Questionnaires were mailed periodically to participants in the Iowa Fluoride Study beginning at 6 weeks of age and continuing for a number of years. Parents recorded the date; child's weight; estima

Solving the problem with stannous fluoride: Formulation, stabilization, and antimicrobial action.

BACKGROUND: Stannous fluoride (SnF2) is a compound present in many commercially available dentifrices; however, oxidative decomposition negatively impacts its efficacy. Stannous oxidation is often mitigated through the addition of complexing agents or sources of sacrificial stannous compounds. The authors have found that the addition of zinc phosphate significantly improved stannous stability more effectively than other stabilization methods. The authors evaluated the chemical speciation of stannous compounds within a variety of formulations using x-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy (XANES

Kampo Therapies and the Use of Herbal Medicines in the Dentistry in Japan.

Dental caries and periodontal disease are two major diseases in the dentistry. As the society is aging, their pathological meaning has been changing. An increasing number of patients are displaying symptoms of systemic disease and so we need to pay more attention to immunologic aggression in our medical treatment. For this reason, we focused on natural products. Kampo consists of natural herbs-roots and barks-and has more than 3000 years of history. It was originated in China as traditional medicine and introduced to Japan. Over the years, Kampo medicine in Japan has been formulated in a way t

Dentinal hypersensitivity: a review.

Dentinal hypersensitivity is generally reported by the patient after experiencing a sharp pain caused by one of several different stimuli. The pain response varies substantially from one person to another. The condition generally involves the facial surfaces of teeth near the cervical aspect and is very common in premolars and canines. The most widely accepted theory of how the pain occurs is Brannstrom's hydrodynamic theory, fluid movement within the dentinal tubules. The dental professional, using a variety of diagnostic techniques, will discern the condition from other conditions that may c

Oral tissue irritants in toothpaste: a case report.

In this case, an adolescent patient presented with multiple, asymptomatic ulcerated lesions- resembling aphthous ulcerations- located in the oral cavity. The etiology of these lesions appeared to be associated with soft tissue irritants found in the patient's toothpaste. This report highlights the need to rule out known oral irritants in dentifrices for patients who present with oral ulcerations.
