Medication Growth Following Diagnosis of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities at Varying Ages Throughout Childhood.

PURPOSE: To characterize age-related trajectories in psychotropic medication and polypharmacy use among children newly diagnosed with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), addressing an evidence gap in longitudinal prescribing patterns. METHODS: This study uses a retrospective longitudinal cohort design and commercial insurance claims from the southeast (2011-2021) to study children newly diagnosed with IDD, aged 2-17 years (N = 938). Psychotropic medication use was defined as ≥ 1 prescription fill per year; polypharmacy as ≥ 2 classes used concurrently for ≥ 60 days. Generalized

Employment trajectories of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities: A 7-year longitudinal study.

This study aimed to identify the subtypes of the longitudinal changes in employment profile of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and to examine their determinants. A total of 339 individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities from the national panel survey collected from 2016 to 2021 were included for a latent class analysis. The results yielded four latent classes: stable unemployment (64.6%); increasing employment (3.5%); stable employment (23.6%); decreasing employment (8.3%). Using the stable unemployment class as the reference group, several correl

Intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and cancer symptom reporting: a matched retrospective cohort study.

PURPOSE: Symptom assessment is key to managing symptom burden following a cancer diagnosis. Adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities (IDD) experience worse outcomes from cancer; disparities may also exist in routine cancer symptom screening. This study investigated whether differences exist in routine cancer symptom assessment between people with and without IDD in a public healthcare system. METHODS: We conducted a matched retrospective cohort study of adults in Ontario, Canada, with and without IDD who received a cancer diagnosis between 2010 and 2019 using administrative heal

Perception of four intellectual and developmental disabilities based on search engine and news portrayal.

BACKGROUND: For people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, other's perceptions of them based on their condition often begin before birth and go on to impact relationships, opportunities, and self perception across the life course. Search engine results and news media, which may portray these conditions stereotypically or in poor light, are often a key source in these perceptions. Our purpose was to understand how search engine results and available news media can shape perceptions on certain intellectual and developmental disabilities. METHODS: We developed an online Likert-scal

Early Intervention for Children With Developmental Disabilities and Their Families via Telehealth: Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Early intervention during the first 3 years of life is crucial for children with developmental disabilities to optimize developmental outcomes. However, access to such services is often limited by geographical distance and resource constraints. Telehealth can be part of a solution for overcoming these barriers, enabling the delivery of early intervention services. However, a comprehensive understanding of the efficacy and implementation of telehealth in early interventions remains elusive, particularly for children aged 0-3 years. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aims to synthesi

An Algorithmic Approach for Detecting Neuromotor Developmental Disabilities in Infants from Wearable Sensor Data.

The inherent challenges in recruiting human subjects, particularly infants, often hinder the acquisition of sufficiently large datasets for health research, thereby limiting the applicability of conventional machine-learning (ML) approaches. In this study, we analyze full-day motion recordings from two groups: typically developing infants (N = 12) and infants at risk for developmental disabilities (N = 24), further divided into those with good (N = 10) and poor (N = 9) developmental outcomes at 24 months. The goal is to differentiate at-risk (AR) infants from those with typical development (TD

Health professionals' education related to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: People with intellectual and developmental disabilities are among the most underserved in an inequitable healthcare system. METHODS: Using Arksey and O'Malley's methodology and a social determinants of health framework, we conducted a scoping review of literature on the state of practice in education of healthcare professionals in the health and healthcare needs of this population. RESULTS: Searches found 4948 articles, with 182 included in the final review. Themes identified included gaps of not being informed by workforce needs, continued use of the medical model of care, not a

Understanding Natural Supports in Diverse Adults With Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Across Life Domains.

Although natural supports benefit individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), little is known about natural support provided within specific life domains or how race/ethnicity or support from professionals impacts the extent of natural support one receives. In this study, 518 parents of adults with IDD responded to a national survey about natural supports, including who provides support, the number of supporters, and variables that predict natural supports. Family most often provided support, although professionals and family friends were frequent supporters in several

Examining the Role of Language in Play Among Children With and Without Developmental Disabilities.

Purpose Play is a critical aspect of children's development, and researchers have long argued that symbolic deficits in play may be diagnostic of developmental disabilities. This study examined whether deficits in play emerge as a function of developmental disabilities and whether our perceptions of play are colored by differences in language and behavioral presentations. Method Ninety-three children participated in this study (typically developing [TD]; n = 23, developmental language disorders [DLD]; n = 24, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder [ADHD]; n = 26, and autism spectrum disorder

Physical activity guideline compliance among a national sample of children with various developmental disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Researchers have reported relatively low estimates of physical activity among children with various developmental disabilities. However, there are inconsistencies within these reports due to methodological issues. OBJECTIVE: The goals of this study were to estimate the prevalence of meeting national physical activity guidelines among children with various developmental disabilities and examine the relative influence of different disability descriptors on meeting the guidelines. METHODS: A sample of 3,010 U.S. children between the ages of 6 and 17 years with parent-reported diagno

Health care expenditures of overweight and obese U.S. adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

BACKGROUND: U.S. adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) have poorer health status and greater risks for being overweight and obese, which are major drivers of health care expenditures in the general population. Health care expenditures and IDD have not been studied using nationally representative samples, and the impact of overweight and obesity have not been examined. AIM: Using nationally representative data, we aimed to compare the health care expenditures of not-overweight, overweight and obese U.S. adults with IDD, and calculate model-adjusted expenditures. Factors associated with meeting physical activity guidelines by adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Many individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) have sedentary lifestyles. AIMS: (a) compare adults with IDD with the general adult population on adherence to U.S. physical activity (PA) guidelines, and (b) determine what factors predict adherence to PA guidelines by adults with IDD. METHODS: We compared adults with IDD from the 2011-2012 National Core Indicators Adult Consumer Survey (NCI-ACS) with the general U.S. population on meeting PA guidelines. We examined the association of demographic, diagnostic, mobility, health and community participation vari

Committee Opinion No. 668 Summary: Menstrual Manipulation for Adolescents With Physical and Developmental Disabilities.

For an adolescent with physical disabilities, intellectual disabilities, or both, and for her caregivers, menstruation can present significant challenges. If, after an evaluation, the adolescent, her family, and the obstetrician-gynecologist have decided that menstrual intervention is warranted, advantages and disadvantages of hormonal methods should be reviewed and individualized to each patient's specific needs. Complete amenorrhea may be difficult to achieve, and realistic expectations should be addressed with the patient and her caregivers. The goal in menstrual manipulation should be opti

Teaching skills related to self-employment to adults with developmental disabilities: an analog analysis.

Employment opportunities for people with developmental disabilities (DD) have improved in the last several decades. There is increasing focus on helping people with DD sample more diverse employment options, including running their own businesses. The present study (1) evaluated the effects of a well-established behavioral teaching procedure on the acquisition of a sample of three broad classes of skills related to self-employment (worker, supervisor, and clerical work) in young adults with DD within an analog recycling business, and (2) investigated the extension of that treatment to the natu

The progression of severe behavior disorder in young children with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Behavior disorders, such as self-injurious, stereotypic, and aggressive behavior are common among individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities. While we have learned much about those behaviors over the past few decades, longitudinal research that looks at developmental trajectory has been rare. This study was designed to examine the trajectory of these three forms of severe behavior disorders over a one year time period. The behaviors were measured on two dimensions: frequency of occurrence and severity. Participants were 160 infants and toddlers at risk for developmental delays

Prevalence of autism spectrum disorders - Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network, United States, 2006.

PROBLEM/CONDITION: Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are a group of developmental disabilities characterized by atypical development in socialization, communication, and behavior. ASDs typically are apparent before age 3 years, with associated impairments affecting multiple areas of a person's life. Because no biologic marker exists for ASDs, identification is made by professionals who evaluate a child's developmental progress to identify the presence of developmental disorders. REPORTING PERIOD: 2006. METHODS: Earlier surveillance efforts indicated that age 8 years is a reasonable index age

Behavioral treatment of chronic skin-picking in individuals with developmental disabilities: a systematic review.

Skin-picking is a type of self-injurious behavior involving the pulling, scratching, lancing, digging, or gouging of one's own body. It is associated with social impairment, and increased medical and mental health concerns. While there are several reports showing that skin-picking is common in individuals with developmental disabilities, knowledge about effective treatment approaches is sparse. We therefore reviewed studies involving the treatment of chronic skin-picking in individuals with developmental disabilities. Systematic searches of electronic databases, journals, and reference lists i
