Nordic walking as physical activity for adults with intellectual disability: A case series study.

This case series study examined the feasibility of implementing a Nordic Walking (NW) program as part of the physical activity routine in day centers for adults with intellectual disabilities, with the aim of enhancing physical fitness. Nine adults (eight males, one female; mean age = 43.67 ± 10.39 years) with intellectual disabilities participated in the study. Baseline data were collected at three time points prior to a 12-week intervention, during which NW sessions were conducted and fitness assessments were administered every four weeks. Physical fitness was evaluated using the Six-Minute

Living with a hidden disability - a qualitative study of post-COVID-19 olfactory dysfunction.

INTRODUCTION: Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, olfactory dysfunction has become increasingly prevalent, manifesting as complete loss of smell, reduced olfactory sensitivity, or distorted perceptions such as parosmia. This qualitative study explored how post-COVID-19 olfactory dysfunction is experienced and how it impacts daily life, well-being, and quality of life. METHODS: A qualitative design inspired by Ricoeur's phenomenological-hermeneutic approach was used. Twenty patients with post-COVID-19 olfactory dysfunction were recruited from an otolaryngology department in Denmark and i

Association between disability and alexithymia in lumbar disc herniation: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Lumbar disc herniation (LDH) is a common cause of low back pain (LBP) and disability. Psychosocial factors, including alexithymia, may influence patient-reported outcomes, but evidence in LDH remains limited. We examined associations among alexithymia, pain intensity, and disability in LDH. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 105 patients with LDH confirmed by clinical examination and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were assessed. Pain intensity was measured using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), disability with the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), and alexithymia with the 20-i

Employment trajectories of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities: A 7-year longitudinal study.

This study aimed to identify the subtypes of the longitudinal changes in employment profile of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and to examine their determinants. A total of 339 individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities from the national panel survey collected from 2016 to 2021 were included for a latent class analysis. The results yielded four latent classes: stable unemployment (64.6%); increasing employment (3.5%); stable employment (23.6%); decreasing employment (8.3%). Using the stable unemployment class as the reference group, several correl

Disability trajectories in the last years of life: a Swedish longitudinal multi-cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The patterns and determinants of late-life functional decline are not fully understood. We examined disability trajectories in relation to proximity to death among decedents aged 70 years and older, and investigated their associations with sex, age at death, education, cognitive impairment, and chronic conditions. METHODS: Harmonised data from six Swedish longitudinal ageing studies (1997-2016) within the National E-infrastructure for Aging Research (NEAR) were used. Participants who died at age 70 years or older and had data on activities of daily living (ADL) from at least two a

Experiences on the implementation and maintenance of the Canadian Disability Participation Project: A mixed-methods study.

Establishing a multidisciplinary network of researchers, trainees, and research users-such as the Canadian Disability Participation Project (CDPP)-is a promising approach to promote and support research partnerships and improve the application of disability research findings. This study aimed to 1) describe the implementation of the CDPP network over time and 2) explore members' experiences and reflections on the implementation and maintenance of the CDPP network and its partnerships. This mixed-methods study used survey data, collected among CDPP researchers, trainees and research users in th

Predictors of hearing loss disability: a multinational study using the ICF core set.

PURPOSE: Objective audiological assessments provide valuable insights on physiological dimensions of hearing loss (HL), but not on lived experiences and functional limitations perceived by individuals. This study employed the multidimensional ICF framework to explore how demographic and diagnostic variables predict self-reported disability in adults with HL. METHOD: This cross-sectional study included 571 participants from India (94), South Africa (79), Sweden (219), and the USA (179). Responses from structured interviews based on the ICF were measured against demographic and diagnostic varia

Work Disability and Fatal Opioid Overdose Risk in the United States: A Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Despite long-term rising national rates of opioid-involved overdose deaths, little is known about the risks for US adults with work disability. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was performed with a nationally representative sample of adults, ages 20-61 years, from the 2008 American Community Survey (N = 2,403,000) followed through 2019 for overdose death involving opioids. Rates of fatal opioid overdose were calculated for adults with and without work disability followed by adjusted overdose hazards from stepwise Cox models controlling for age, sex, and race/ethnicity; marital

Proactive Approaches for a Wheelchair User in Pediatric Residency: A Case Study for Disability Inclusion.

OBJECTIVE: Despite encountering many barriers to inclusion, people with disabilities are entering residency training in increasing numbers. However, the increase in representation among people with physical disabilities remains low, and published case studies and accommodations processes for wheelchair users in pediatric residency are absent in the literature. To support the inclusion of residents with physical disabilities in residency, we outline a proactive approach to the accommodations process and inclusion of a resident with a physical disability in pediatric residency. METHODS: A multi

Athlete identity in para-sport: A comparative study of athletes with congenital and acquired disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Identity development explores how individuals perceive themselves based on their life experiences, including their current self and aspirations. Athlete Identity has been studied using a 4-factor framework across various sports and ability groups. However, there is limited research on how individuals with physical disabilities perceive themselves as athletes and how an acquired disability impacts identity compared to a congenital disability. OBJECTIVE: To test the validity of the 4-Factor Model of Athlete Identity and to determine if athletic identity differs between para-athletes
