Microwave electrodeless ultraviolet (MWUV) technology, as an emerging food processing technique, has garnered growing attention in the realm of food science in recent years. Based on different application requirements, MWUV equipment types are categorized as microwave oven reactor, continuous-flow UV-microwave reactor, coaxially driven MWUV reactor, and complete ultraviolet reactor. The luminescence properties of MWUV equipment depend on their filler gas; mercury is commonly used as a filler gas to produce a wavelength at 253.7 nm for food non-thermal sterilization. The microbial sterilization

Although no known asteroid poses a threat to Earth for at least the next century, the catalogue of near-Earth asteroids is incomplete for objects whose impacts would produce regional devastation1,2. Several approaches have been proposed to potentially prevent an asteroid impact with Earth by deflecting or disrupting an asteroid1-3. A test of kinetic impact technology was identified as the highest-priority space mission related to asteroid mitigation1. NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission is a full-scale test of kinetic impact technology. The mission's target asteroid was Dimo

Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), now known as Diffuse Midline Glioma (DMG) is a devastating pediatric brain tumor with limited treatment options and a very poor prognosis. Despite more than 250 clinical trials aimed to treat children diagnosed with DMG, no curative therapies currently exist for this patient population. A major obstacle has been the intact blood brain barrier (BBB) which prevents most therapeutics from crossing into the tumor bed. Focused Ultrasound (FUS) is an emerging, noninvasive medical technology which has been shown in both preclinical and clinical research to dis

During the past decade, the endovascular treatment of peripheral arterial disease has become more widespread due to the impressive extension of the endovascular toolbox to include different atherectomy technologies. The promise of atherectomy is to avoid the "barotraumas" defined as complications of traditional angioplasty such as dissection, elastic recoil, and disruption of the internal elastic lamina resulting in overwhelming neointima and smooth muscle cell proliferation. The oldest atherectomy technologies are the excimer laser and the Rotablator. The excimer laser technology is based on

Neurodegenerative diseases are characterized by progressive cell loss leading to disruption of the structure and function of the central nervous system. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) was among the first of these disorders modeled in patient-specific iPSCs, and recent findings have translated into some of the earliest iPSC-inspired clinical trials. Focusing on ALS as an example, we evaluate the status of modeling neurodegenerative diseases using iPSCs, including methods for deriving and using disease-relevant neuronal and glial lineages. We further highlight the remaining challenges in ex

: The COVID-19 health crisis joined, rather than supplanted, the opioid crisis as the most acutely pressing threats to US public health. In the setting of COVID-19, opioid use disorder treatment paradigms are being disrupted, including the fact that methadone clinics are scrambling to give "take-home" doses where they would typically not. The rapid transition away from in-person examination, dosing and group therapy in an era of social isolation calls for adjustments to clinical practice, including emphasizing patient-provider communication, favoring new inductees on buprenorphine and leveragi

Nocturnal gastroesophageal reflux has been associated with poor sleep quality. Normal physiological adaptations of the aerodigestive system to sleep prolong and intensify nocturnal reflux events. This occurrence leads to sleep disruption, as well as to esophageal, laryngeal, and laryngopharyngeal reflux. Controversy exists on whether OSA and nocturnal reflux are causally linked or merely associated because of shared risk factors. Advances in diagnostic technology have provided new insights into gastroesophageal reflux and the mechanisms of nocturnal reflux during sleep. This update reviews new

Emerging infectious diseases will continue to threaten public health and are sustained by global commerce, travel and disruption of ecological systems. Most pandemic threats are caused by viruses from either zoonotic sources or vector-borne sources. Developing better ways to anticipate and manage the ongoing microbial challenge will be critical for achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and, conversely, each such goal will affect the ability to control infectious diseases. Here we discuss how technology can be applied effectively to better prepare for and respond to new vir

Sepsis is characterized by profound changes in systemic and cellular metabolism that disrupt normal metabolic homeostasis. These metabolic changes can serve as biomarkers for disease severity. Lactate, a metabolite of anaerobic metabolism, is the most widely used ICU biomarker and it is incorporated into multiple management algorithms. Technological advances now make broader metabolic profiling possible, with early studies identifying metabolic changes associated with sepsis mortality. Finally, given the marked changes in metabolism in sepsis and the association of worse prognosis in patients

Large ventral hernias can be managed with open components separation technique and onlay mesh reinforcement with low hernia recurrence rates. However, disruption of the perforating vessels to the medial skin flaps results in high rates of wound complications after the operation. An aggressive wound protocol including debridement of tissue with poor perfusion is needed to minimize complications. ICG angiography, a novel technology designed to detect tissue perfusion, can assist in this effort by identifying the ischemic areas to help guide the extent of debridement. This report presents a case

Short (or small) interfering RNAs (siRNAs) are double-stranded RNA molecules about 21-25 nucleotides long that have the capacity to disrupt the activity of genes on a posttranscriptional level. This sequence homology-driven gene silencing capacity has been utilized by researchers to selectively block the translation of mRNA to proteins in order to study specific gene functions and identify target molecules. Importantly, siRNAs have the potential to be used in treatment of disease. Here, we describe how the siRNA technology can be used to knock down genes in dental tissue-derived cells using in

The treatment of prostate cancer (PCa) requires approaches that eliminate malignant tissue while preserving essential urinary and sexual functions. Irreversible electroporation (IRE) represents a targeted ablative strategy that disrupts cellular membrane integrity through precise electrical pulses, demonstrating the capacity to ablate cancerous foci while sparing adjacent neurovascular bundles and sphincter mechanisms. This structured review examines the mechanistic foundations of IRE technology, evaluates current clinical evidence regarding safety and efficacy, and explores promising applicat

β-thalassaemia is a genetic disorder resulting in a reduction or absence of β-globin gene expression. Due to the high prevalence of β-thalassaemia and the lack of available treatment other than blood transfusion and haematopoietic stem cell (HSC) transplantation, the disease represents a considerable burden to clinical and economic systems. Foetal haemoglobin has an appreciated ameliorating effect in β-haemoglobinopathy, as the γ-globin chain substitutes the β-globin chain reduction by pairing with the excess α-globin chain in β-thalassaemia and reduces sickling in sickle cell disease (SCD). Inborn errors of immunity (IEIs) are genetic disorders that impair immune defense and regulation, increasing susceptibility to infections, including those in the oral cavity. The oral microbiota plays a vital role in maintaining oral health, and in pediatric patients with IEIs, disruptions in this balance can lead to dental caries and other oral diseases. This chapter provides a comprehensive analysis of the relationship between immune deficiencies and oral microbiota dysbiosis, focusing on dental caries in children with IEIs. Omics technologies, particularly metagenomics, have enhanced unders

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a classic neurodegenerative disorder characterized by both motor and nonmotor symptoms, with circadian rhythm disruption being particularly prominent. This disruption leads to issues such as sleep disturbances, cognitive decline, and mood fluctuations in patients. Research has shown a close relationship between circadian rhythm dysregulation and these symptoms, making circadian rhythm regulation an emerging therapeutic strategy. Exercise, as a nonpharmacological treatment, has been demonstrated to modulate circadian rhythms through various mechanisms, thereby improv

Obesity is a global epidemic with profound implications for fertility in women of reproductive age. This review summarizes how obesity affects fertility by disrupting the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian (HPO) axis, affecting oocyte quality and reserve, and compromising endometrial receptivity. The combination of these disruptions leads to reduced fertility rates, decreased success with assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs), and increased risk for adverse pregnancy outcomes. This review also examines the impact of interventions for weight loss, including lifestyle modifications, medications,

Novel cancer treatments, prevention of postmenopausal disorder, and prescription of oral contraceptives are the main developments in the design of synthetic estrogenic medication. The increasing consumption of these synthetic pharmaceuticals, in addition to human and animal natural estrogenic compound excretion, contribute to their environmental dissemination worldwide. Their assimilation as a result of consumption of food and water perturbs normal endocrine systems and leads to the emergence of human and animal diseases and malformations. These compounds are active in the organism at low conc
