Drought and sugar transport: From turgor sensing to carbon allocation.

Drought triggers reprogramming of sugar transport, which acts as a central hub linking stress perception to carbon allocation. Under drought, FERONIA acts as a cell wall-plasma membrane turgor sensor that activates SnRK2s via outside-in signaling, and stress-activated kinases (SnRK2s, CPKs, and CIPKs) directly phosphorylate SWEET, SUT1, and TST transporters to enhance long-distance sucrose transport and vacuolar sugar accumulation. Recent cross-species single-cell atlases have identified phloem foundational genes as new targets for improving sugar transport. Meanwhile, deep mutational scanning

Closer People Hurt You More: How Social Distance Modulates Deception-Triggered Trust Decline and Trust Repair.

Close relationships generally help foster and sustain interpersonal trust, but also intensify harm when trust is violated by deception. Based on Expectancy Violation Theory and Decision System Theory, this study explored how social distance moderates the impact of deception on trust through three experiments. In Study 1 (N = 86), deception by acquaintances (vs. strangers) resulted in a higher decline in trust. Building on this, Study 2 (N = 202) further examined mediating mechanisms, indicating that the deception of acquaintances reduces trust more by causing negative emotions, while deception

Understanding Social Camouflaging in Autistic Adults: Integrating Cognitive and Psychosocial Predictors.

Camouflaging refers to strategies used by autistic individuals to mask traits and adapt to neurotypical norms. Beyond socio-cognitive abilities, recent work suggests that camouflaging is also shaped by psychosocial factors. This study tested an integrative, prediction-oriented model of camouflaging. We hypothesized that higher levels of camouflaging would be associated with socio-cognitive functioning, perceived social misfit, mental health, and lower autism acceptance, and that an integrative model combining these factors would predict individual differences in camouflaging. Participants were

Cognitive and affective processing of social exclusion in borderline personality disorder and social anxiety disorder.

Causal attributions of social events are crucial for understanding emotional responses. Aim of the study was to identify appraisal processes in response to social exclusion in borderline personality disorder (BPD) and social anxiety disorder (SAD). Twenty-five patients with BPD, 25 patients with SAD and 25 healthy controls played Cyberball, a virtual ball-tossing paradigm that experimentally induces social exclusion. Causal attributions, subjective feelings and action tendencies in response to social exclusion were assessed. Both clinical groups showed more internal attributions and less contr

Stigma-Related Stress and Its Correlates Among Men with Pedophilic Sexual Interests.

Despite decades of research on the adverse consequences of stereotyping and discrimination for many stigmatized groups, little is known about how people with pedophilia perceive and react to stigma. In this article, we present a framework that outlines how stigma-related stress might negatively affect emotional and social areas of functioning, cognitive distortions, and the motivation to pursue therapy, all of which may contribute to an increased risk of sexual offending. We tested our hypotheses in an online survey among self-identified German-speaking people with pedophilia (N = 104) using a

Vertical phoria and postural control in upright stance in healthy young subjects.

OBJECTIVE: To test the quality of postural performance in quiet upright stance in healthy young adults with vertical heterophoria (VH) within the normal range and without VH (vertical orthophoria, VO). METHODS: Twenty-six subjects took part in this study. The postural stability was measured with a force platform while the subjects fixated a target at eye level in a straight ahead position, placed at either 40 or 200cm. RESULTS: The results indicated that the postural control was better for subjects with VO than subjects with VH. Particularly, there was an interaction between vertical phoria

A female advantage in the imitation of gestures by preschool children.

Adult research has suggested a sex difference in the neuroanatomical organization and efficiency of the limb praxis system. The present study used a videotape analysis of movement errors to investigate whether a sex difference in limb praxis can be identified in childhood. Preschool girls (n = 33) committed fewer "praxic" errors than boys (n = 31) (i.e., errors that resemble those seen in limb apraxia) when imitating non-representational gestures and when imitating common, everyday gestures with representational content. In none of the conditions did the female advantage generalize to "nonprax

Social Cognition and Social Inclusion in Young People With First-Episode Psychosis: A Brief Report.

AIM: First-episode psychosis (FEP) is a disabling illness associated with poor social inclusion, a critical determinant of mental health. Social cognitive impairment, a core feature of psychosis, may have implications for social inclusion. METHOD: This cross-sectional study investigated relationships between social inclusion and social cognition in 56 young people with FEP (aged 16-25, M = 20.4; SD = 2.8 years) receiving treatment at Orygen's Early Psychosis Prevention and Intervention Centre in Melbourne, Australia. Social inclusion was assessed alongside social cognition (domains including

Effect of task constraint on reaching performance in children with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy.

The purposes of the study were to examine the effect of task constraint on the reaching performance in children with spastic cerebral palsy (CP) and to examine the correlations between the reaching performance and postural control. Eight children with CP and 16 typically developing (TD) children participated in the study. They performed a reach-and-return task with a seated posture on a stool. The target for reaching was set at a 120% arm-length distance in three directions (anterior, medial, and lateral). Reaching speed was modulated with a metronome at a rate of 46 beats/min. Spatial consequences of bridging the saccadic gap.

We report six experiments suggesting that conscious perception is actively redrafted to take account of events both before and after the event that is reported. When observers saccade to a stationary object they overestimate its duration, as if the brain were filling in the saccadic gap with the post-saccadic image. We first demonstrate that this illusion holds for moving objects, implying that the perception of time, velocity, and distance traveled become discrepant. We then show that this discrepancy is partially resolved up to 500 ms after a saccade: the perceived offset position of a post-

Initial postoperative plasticity as a predictor of mid-term stereoacuity outcome after surgery for intermittent exotropia.

BACKGROUND: Intermittent exotropia (IXT) would cause different degrees of damage to stereopsis. We aimed to introduce a visual perception plasticity score (VPPS) that reflects initial postoperative plasticity and evaluate its effectiveness in predicting the mid-term surgical outcome in IXT patients. METHODS: A total of 149 patients with intermittent exotropia who underwent surgery in November 2018 and October 2019 were recruited. All subjects underwent detailed ocular examinations before and after surgery. VPPS were calculated based on visual perception examination system at one week postoper

Time-to-contact perception in the brain.

Time-to-contact (TTC) perception refers to the ability of an observer to estimate the remaining time before an object reaches a point in the environment, and is of crucial importance in daily life. Noninvasive correlational approaches have identified several brain areas sensitive to TTC information. Here we report the results of two studies, including one during an awake brain surgery, that aimed to identify the specific areas causally engaged in the TTC estimation process. In Study 1, we tested 40 patients with brain tumor in a TTC estimation task. The results showed that four of the six pati

Typical and atypical development of visual estimation abilities.

Despite the fact that developmental impairments of number skills are common, they remain sparsely investigated. We explored low-level numerical representations and their developmental trajectory in a developmental disorder, Williams syndrome (WS). Groups of WS and typically developing (TD) individuals estimated rapidly-presented arrays of 5, 7, 9, and 11 dots. In comparison to the normal developmental trajectory, the ontogenesis of estimation skills in WS is both delayed and deviant. Whereas TD children's estimations became significantly more accurate and less variable over developmental time,

Predicting Compliance with Sanitary Behaviors among Students in Higher Education During the Second COVID-19 Wave: The Role of Health Anxiety and Risk Perception.

To limit the spread of COVID-19, public authorities have recommended sanitary behaviors such as handwashing, mask-wearing, physical distancing, and social distancing. We recruited a large sample of higher education students in Belgium (N = 3201-3441) to investigate the role of sociodemographic variables, mental health, previous COVID-19 infections, academic involvement, and risk perception on adherence to these sanitary behaviors. This cross-sectional study took place during the second COVID-19 wave in Belgium, between February and March 2021. Analyses showed that living alone, being female, l

Is ethnic prejudice declining in Britain? Change in social distance attitudes among ethnic majority and minority Britons.

Most literature on racial prejudice deals with the racial attitudes of the ethnic majority and ethnic minorities separately. This paper breaks this tradition. We examine the social distance attitudes of white and non-white British residents to test if these attitudes follow the same trends over time, whether they are driven by the same social processes and whether they are inter-related. We have three main findings. Firstly, social distance from other ethnic groups has declined over time for both white and ethnic minority Britons. For the white majority there are both period and cohort element

Perceived versus Objective Cultural Distance: Differential Effects on Acculturation Experiences.

How do perceived and objective cultural distance compare in predicting immigrants' acculturation experiences? Using data from a diverse sample of immigrants residing in the United States (N = 939), we examined perceived cultural distance alongside objective cultural distance measured by the Cultural Fixation Index (CFST ), a novel and flexible metric derived from World Values Survey data that captures between-group variation in cultural values. Our findings reveal that perceived cultural distance, assessed using the Brief Perceived Cultural Distance Scale, was more often associated with psycho
