Disseminating Community-Engaged Research Involving People Experiencing Homelessness and Diabetes Using Participatory Theater.

People experiencing homelessness balance competing priorities resulting in reduced capacity to meet the care demands of chronic conditions, including Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). Arts-based performances present an avenue to expose others to these challenges. This article describes the process of incorporating qualitative research findings in a community-based participatory theater production to expose audiences to the day-to-day realities of living with T2DM while simultaneously experiencing homelessness. We conducted five focus groups and two individual interviews with people living with

Complementary therapies intervention in Parkinson's disease: systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by both motor and non-motor impairments, leading to significant declines in quality of life (QoL). While physiotherapy remains a mainstay of non-pharmacological management, interest in complementary therapies-such as music therapy, dance, and art therapy-has grown due to their potential to address motor, cognitive, emotional, and social aspects of PD within a holistic framework. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of complementary therapies compared to usual care (e.g., physiotherapy) in improv

From song to stories: assessing the impact of exposure to arts-based community engagement tools in shaping knowledge, attitudes, and acceptability toward the Sterile Insect Technique for malaria control in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Community engagement (CE) is essential for public health interventions. This is particularly important when introducing novel technologies, such as the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT), that require strong community understanding and acceptance. Against this background, arts-based CE strategies, including music, drama, and radio short stories, were developed and piloted, but their effectiveness remained unevaluated. This study assessed whether exposure to arts-based CE approaches influenced community knowledge, attitudes, and acceptance of the SIT in uMkhanyakude District, KwaZulu-Na

[Cancer on the big screen. How and when movies deal with oncological diseases].

Films that feature characters with cancer have become a familiar sight for movie-goers. 148 movies treating tumors were selected, produced all over the world since the Thirties, in which cancer had "prompt", "relevant", or "plot" character. In order to clearly understand each film's peculiar message about cancer, we recollected data such as genealogy, year and country of production, main characters' age and gender, and kind of tumor. Movies deal with cancer through very relevant questions, as well as themes and contexts that have great influence on oncologist's mind and consciousness. Speciall

Tailored, interactive soap operas for breast cancer education of high-risk Hispanic women.

BACKGROUND: While Hispanic women have lower rates of breast cancer than do women of other ethnic groups, they are the least likely to undergo screening examinations. This study evaluated a culturally sensitive and linguistically appropriate, tailored, computer-based, educational program for early detection of breast cancer aimed at high-risk Hispanic women. METHODS: Spanish-speaking Hispanic women from an inner-city community health clinic were recruited and randomly assigned either to a computer intervention with an interactive soap-opera format (n = 118) or to a comparison group (n = 60). [Tics and Tourette syndrome in literature, cinema and television].

INTRODUCTION: Different neurological diseases have often been portrayed in literature, cinema and television. Tics and Tourette syndrome, for example, are commonly represented from different perspectives, which are sometimes very realistic but in some cases are used for more dramatic purposes or to make a character look ridiculous. One of the main effects of these inadequate views is to further stigmatise those who suffer these movement disorders. AIMS: To review the way tics and Tourette syndrome have been portrayed in certain literary works, films and television. DEVELOPMENT: Tics are rapi

Impact of Medical TV Shows on the Surgical Knowledge of Non-Healthcare Students of Lahore, Pakistan.

PURPOSE: A popular genre of television shows is medical dramas. Although the primary objective of watching these shows is entertainment, acquiring medical knowledge is a passive by-product. Surgical procedures constitute a large part of the storyline of these shows. This could either serve as a source of medical knowledge or provide false information, the effect being especially important in individuals with no prior medical exposure. This study assesses the impact medical TV shows can have on the surgical knowledge of non-healthcare students and the difference in knowledge between different d

Marked variation in the bacterial microbiota of commercially produced Greek kefir products revealed by full-length 16S rRNA gene sequencing.

Kefir is a fermented dairy beverage characterized by a complex microbial community that contributes to its technological and sensory properties and has been associated in previous studies with potential health-related effects. While the microbiota of kefir grains has been extensively studied, information regarding the bacterial communities of commercially produced Greek kefir remains limited. The aim of the present study was to characterize the bacterial community composition of commercially produced kefir products collected from different regions of Greece using full-length 16S rRNA gene sequ

BLACK-ARTS: a qualitative study exploring the insights of black young people with psychiatric disorders and the uses of creative arts therapies to improve mental well-being.

BACKGROUND: Black people experience persistent inequalities in mental health outcomes, access and care quality compared with their white counterparts. These disparities are compounded by structural racism and a lack of culturally competent care within National Health Service (NHS) services. Creative arts therapies (CATs), including music, art, dance and drama therapy, may offer culturally relevant, non-verbal approaches to mental health support for this population. OBJECTIVE: To explore how black young people with mental health challenges and NHS clinicians perceive the usefulness and cultura
